Elvis Wears Turban To Heal Sick Child OR High?
Wait, Elvis is wearing a bejeweled Turban, an Edwardian Overcoat with Fur Yoke, and Solid Gold Capricorn Necklace, to visit Karate Dojo?
Yep! This never-before-seen footage is the Holy Grail of NBS Elvis footage.
It documents the night Elvis ventured out in the Summer...
Amazing 'Turban' footage from '72!

In fact, the footage depicts Dave's first time meeting Elvis, and the most he recalls is that it was very warm that September day, and it seemed odd that Elvis had on the turban and heavy coat.
Frankly, one sees a slightly sad figure. Elvis looks lost, which in many ways he was at this time.
More importantly, what this footage -- either posted by Barry Elwood or a relative -- proves is that such unreleased footage is just the tip of the iceberg. It is a shame that the powers that be seem to have no interest in gathering such footage, which stretches back to at least Jan-Feb 1955, and creating an "Anthology"-type of DVD project.
Elvis and his fans deserve no less, but here we are in 2010 with nothing of the kind on the horizon.

There are a number of photos that show Elvis wearing heavy coats indoors, especially in Vegas, where staying warm wasn't as factor. He only went from his suite to the dressing room to the stage and back.
Photos from spring and summer 1976 show him boarding the plane, bundled up in a heavy leisure suit. He wore the tracksuits when it was 100 degrees outside.
He didn't wear short sleeve shirts, or shorts.
Maybe he thought he'd lose weight by working up a sweat. Either way, the fact that he'd be dressed like that in September isn't terribly out of character.
He was a strange guy, wasn't he...dressing up when it was 100 degrees outside..but I don't have a problem with that either..that was Elvis...short sleeve shirts or shorts..? No, not for Elvis...he was a guy that wasn't very fund of showing his body lines in that way..even when he was on a beach he would dress up I guess..

I couldn't agree any more. It is indeed shameful that EPE has never done such a project. There's heaps of footage waiting to be used for just such a comprehensive 'Anthology'.
The FTD label was erected to release all the rare audio footage, especially for the die-hard fans. Why such a project visually-wise cannot come from the ground is beyond me.

I left out the sweatsuit on the beach in Hawaii! And, damn if he didn't cut the sleeves off on that occasion.
Even when he was thin, he covered up. Recall the home movies showing him at the beach and pool."Don't tell me to play it. I will when I get ready. Do you understand me?"

by chris j » Fri Apr 09, 2010 8:43 pmColin B, Eddie Fadal told me that the clothes Elvis is wearing in the picture you posted were Eddie's. He said Elvis had worked up a sweat playing football, so had showered and borrowed some of Eddie's clothes. Eddie showed him his wardrobe and said take anything you want. They do look kind of small on him.

by Little Darlin » Fri Apr 09, 2010 11:06 pmI have to agree with Carolyn. This is the only time I've looked at Elvis and thought what the hell were you thinking. That footage IS amazing though.I saw Elvis live in concert the year before he died. Even then, he was bigger than life, and had amazing charisma. Haven't seen anything like it since, ....until Adam.........Nocturnal 2010

Same with this photo! No folks, Presley was NOT coming back from a show!
Incipiently, this was another photo taken in the month of September ('75).

I recall a few years ago someone on this board pointed out that the US Summer months from 1973 inwards all had strange or health negative events.

I think your former post is more incisive:
Marko wrote:In either Elvis What Happened or Revelations From Memphis Mafia books they tell that Elvis wore a turban when he was into psychic healing. I think it was Sonny West's kid whom Elvis tried to heal and the kid went for the jewel on the turban. Elvis got upset because the kid was ruining his show. As always Elvis went all the way. When he wanted to be a cop he got the badge, guns and a full uniform. When he played football he had his own team with uniforms and cheerleaders. When he wanted to be a cowboy he had a ranch and everything that goes with it. It was just natural for him to put on a turban when he though he was a psychic healer.
Elvis had a lot of strange, esoteric and irrational beliefs. He would never have entertained a chump like Larry Geller if he didn't believe in a fair bit of wacky stuff. Some people need to read around. You can find references in unusual places, like the picture book on how Graceland used to look, which talks about these tall folding screens he'd had erected due to a superstitious belief about never closing doors and windows (allegedly).
And, aesthetically, does the pearl-white turban look all that bad on the head of Elvis Presley? Not from where I'm sat. Sure, it's extreme, but EP was a fairly extreme guy. It's pleasing to see that he talked the talk and walked the walk, so to speak -- even if some of it stemmed from a deep sense of neediness/insecurity. To be honest, I've known some boring people in my life, and when I see them in, for example, the same navy-blue trousers, a bland white shirt and simple black shoes, I'm relieved to know that there are more daring souls out there. Sartorially, and otherwise, Elvis wasn't afraid to push the boat out.
If you think the turban is shocking, don't click to see the resulting picture, will you? This is a full-blown assault on the senses: http://www.elvisinfonet.com/image-files/book14x.jpg And we all know about the "TCB" and "Jungle" rooms, right?

Re: "Stoned"
He could be stoned, he could not be stoned. Is anyone here an expert on visually-identifying these matters, least of all when the source material is blurry 8mm footage hastily transferred to video cassette, heavily compressed for YouTube, showing a man for less-than-two minutes, with no sound, his eyes behind sunglasses, at a distance? Elvis does seem fairly serious in it, but being serious is not synonymous with being stoned. Even then, there's a very Elvis-sie moment at around 0:42, where he teases that kid, and then struts forward, cool as ice.
In fact, I'm gonna go one better than what I said earlier: he makes that turban hella cool. I get the sense that American and European apparel is generally fine, but Elvis must be punished for having the temerity to step outside of western-approved fashion lines. Y'know, it's a smug, subliminally-racist attitude to have, and I sense that the world still has a long way to go. Let's also remember that this is private footage showing EP in a very private moment -- which, maybe, says something about EP, the man, and his perception of and sensitivity towards the general attitudes of other people; it may also serve to cast an ironic pall over public remarks that, overtly or implicitly, express disdain and contempt.

In closing:
Some people on this forum, in my opinion, are waaaay too judgmental about a guy that we've nearly all supposedly idolized since children and seriously studied as adults.

C'mon, this is one stunning photo! Look at the attire, from the sharp frolicking boots, the bling, the incredible jacket, capped off by the turban! The frolicking dude knew how to dress and he didn't care what anybody thought, because he, and only he, could pull it off!

Yes, I did read that...
Why shouldn't I...what is your contribution to this topic ?what ever you want, buddy, i just did´t understand your reply to Jacksonville post (and still don´t) - that´s all.
you wanna know my contribution on this top?
as many others have stated before, i´d say, the big, high-quality pics from the karate school (that many of us have known before) are AMAZING enough, but this super-rare footage is MORE THAN THAT!
man, twenty or thirty years ago collectors would have killed for footage like this, even in lesser picturesque. the release would have been sensational and not just a few of us would have paid big bucks for a video tape of it. now it´s all out there in (almost) tb-quality as a footnote on YouTube for free and everybody, man, it is indeed astounding how times have changed with the internet.
we never had it that good!
referring to the footage: the outfit did not cause a big surprise to me, since i´ve known the fotos for many years. (thank you so much for the big ones, TITS!)
e´ often dressed in private like a nightlight-pimp in the 70s, so this is just the cherry on the cake for me. embarrassing? not to me. more the fancy, self-centered and cool looking showman - on stage as in private - we´be all known for so many years; one more piece to complete the puzzle, that will never be finished, one more hint for solution of the riddle, that will never be solved.
ever wondered, why his nickname was "crazy"?
p.s.@all: as the funkyangel pointed out, save it on your harddisc now, because it may not be on youtube for long. there are free and easy to handle programs on the www to do so. google and you´ll find ´em!
