The Power of The Way

This video has been edited from the original "Nodan Tapes". The karateka believed his power came from a mastery of The Five Principles of "centering" technique. Already in his late fifties at the time of filming, his suspended, horizontal board breaks were intended to illustrate the advantages of sound technique over pure physical prowess. His breaking demonstrations were uniquely characterized by their practical applications to real street situations. The "no dan" character served several purposes for the karateka. First, he said, "humility finds a refuge in anonymity". Second, the character was a parody of his own misguided quest to become a "Great" martial arts master. Third, it was a commentary on our contemporary preoccupation with belt rankings. His demonstrations are authentic, and the message describes his actual experience in the martial arts.
