Help: How to write the perfect "Did you know" Hook
On the Main Page of Wikipedia, there is a section which is called did you know (DYK).
Below are four easy steps to
make this process easier for a beginner. Note, not every article will
be able to fit the criteria below and that is all right because no
article is perfect.
1. Make it interesting
Writing a DYK hook that essentially says, "Did you know ... that it has been said that one plus one equals two?"
is unlikely to get attention because it is not only boring, but it also
tells the casual reader all that they need to know. A good hook should
make the reader want to find out more information. When your hook is not
about snails in pillows (fossilized snails found in rock formations),
you might have to write in a style that increases a reader's want for
more information. For example, if your subject involves how an island
was misidentified for many years, you could say, "... that Adventurer Island
was thought to exist for five hundred years before it was proven to be
nearby Guano Island?" This makes the reader want to read up on why the
island was misidentified for so long. Another example that garnered
30,100 views when it was used on the main page is the following,
"...
that some hermaphrodite snails and slugs pierce each other with love darts (pictured)
during mating?"
A love dart sounds interesting because it involves not
only snail sex, but the name itself makes one want to learn more about
what it is.
2. Make it weird
Another way to create a good hook is to make it weird. Sure you could just say that the Termitaradus mitnicki no longer lives on this planet, or you could say,
"... that researchers have identified the life form (pictured)
which no longer lives on this planet?"
That hook makes people want to
find out more about how scientists have not only managed to find a
deceased life form intact but also find out how they were able to
identify it. In addition, you do not have to add the title of the
article to the hook. Masking the name of the article can work perfectly
if it might confuse people. For example, the hook,
Feel free to do whatever you want to help make the
hook better, as long as it stays within the guidelines of the DYK
process. Imagination is allowed on Wikipedia because it helps to get
things done. The same goes for a hook. You can either create lines of
boring questions or create something that is truly innovative and
inspiring to others who are aspiring Wikipedians.
4. Make it inspiring to others
Finally
in the words of George, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." Plan
to make your hook the greatest that it can possibly be because you might
just inspire someone to create an article and improve the encyclopedia
that either might have always vandalized the Wiki or just thought that
editing is dumb. The DYK process is Wikipedia's one chance to showcase
all work, even entry-level work and if you can succeed at that, you have
succeeded for the day.

One of the first French new wave bands, in 1976 the band took part in the 100 Club Punk Festival in London, sharing the bill with such bands as Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned and Buzzcocks.
A single was released in a picture cover on Polydor Records in 1977, "Boozy Creed", with "Driver Blues" on the B-side.
The single met with mixed reviews, causing Polydor to abandon the release of the band's eponymous debut album outside France.
The album was described by Allmusic as
"a largely flat, bland collection of recycled Stones and New York Dolls riffs with low-quality vocals",
while Trouser Press were also not impressed with what they described as
"uninspired sub-Rolling Stones rock'n'boogie with terrible vocals by Elli Medeiros".
The band split up in 1979, with Elli Medeiros and Jacno then forming the duo, Elli et Jacno. Medeiros went on to a solo career, releasing the Elli album in 1988.
Jacno later released several solo albums as well as working with several other artists including Mareva Galanter.
Medeiros was chosen by Dev Hynes as part of his 'Fantasy Band' in 2008.

Elli & Jacno was a French 1980s electron-pop group. They were quite successful in France and to some extent in Britain, having been featured once on the front page of Melody Maker magazine.
Jacno composed and performed the music and Elli sang and wrote the lyrics. They released three albums together before splitting up and beginning solo careers. A compilation Symphonies de Poche was released by Virgin ten years later.

Jacno (born 3 July 1957, Paris - died 6 November 2009) was a French musician.
Born as Denis Quillard, he was a founding member of the first French punk band The Stinky Toys. In the early 1980s, after the group disbanded, he teamed up with former Stinky Toys singer Elli Medeiros to form the pop duo Elli et Jacno. Jacno had also released a number of solo albums since 1979.
A chain smoker, he took his professional name from the name of the graphic artist who drew the Gallic helmet logo of French Gauloises cigarettes brand.
He died overnight between 5–6 November from cancer, aged 52.
