Jaco: The Extraordinary And Tragic Life of Jaco Pastorius

Front Cover

Hal Leonard Corporation, 2005 - Biography & Autobiography - 339 pages

A fitting tribute to the troubled genius who revolutionized electric bass playing and bridged the gaps between jazz, R&B, rock and funk. From his early days in R&B club bands through his international stardom with fusion group Weather Report and on to his solo career and tragic death at age 35, this book portrays the life and music of Jaco Pastorius, the self-proclaimed "world's greatest bass player."

This special anniversary edition features new interviews with Jaco's childhood friends, prominent bass players of Jaco's era and afterward, and girlfriend Teresa Nagell, who was with Jaco in the last few years of his life. Some incidents from the first edition have been further researched and expanded to become full chapters.

This book is awesome. I was amazed at how Jaco was so brilliant and so self destructive. It is sad to see his life filled with so much oppritunity to be wasted away. It wasn't a sunrise to his friends that most just stood back and took him as being a crazy nut. He had a disease that is very common. But I have seen in all forms of art that usually creative artist have something weird about them in one way or another. This isn't a book to pick up just before you go to work to pass a little free time. Once you get started reading this it is hard to put it down. I personally have read it four times. It was very well written and it makes you feel for Jaco during some of his physicist spells. This book gets an A+ from me.

Exclusive to this edition, the CD features newly revealed music tracks from Jaco's early years along with spoken testimonials from Jaco's friends and colleagues.

Common terms and phrases

Popular passages

Page iii - For the great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie — deliberate, contrived, and dishonest — but the myth — persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Page 168 - Everest, as seen from great distances by fliers from Tibet. To some it may be the solitary mountain, the tower of strength over a countryside — Fujiyama, Ararat, Monadnock, Shasta, or Grand Teton.
Page 266 - ... therefore, in the name of the state of Washington, you are commanded forthwith to apprehend the said CD, and bring him before me, to be dealt with according to law.
Page 129 - The last of these was a mere Chimera, no man would know what to make of it or what to do with it.
Page 168 - Mountains are symbols, like pyramids, of man's attempt to know God. Mountains are symbolic meeting places between the mundane and spiritual worlds.
Page 98 - I'll be on the note an octave higher, up around the pickup, and pluck the string with my first and second fingers behind the thumb. That way you hear the harmonic. It's actually very simple. You just have to spend a lot of time doing it, and you've got to have really good chops because it hurts your fingers. You have to pick it very hard to get it to come out.
Page 78 - Jaco is a phenomenon. He is able to make sounds on the bass that are a total surprise to the sensibilities. Not only single notes, but chords, harmonics, and all sorts of nuances with the color of the instrument that when combined and translated through Jaco make for some of the best music that I've heard in a long time.
Page 107 - There's a sound I get, a percussive kind of sound, almost like a conga. I get it by hitting the strings with my right palm, getting a rhythmic thing going, and then just quickly sliding my palm down the neck, from the bridge down to the nut. It adds some meat in appropriate places. You can hear it on 'The Elders
