Del Lago's COCAINE RESTAURANT (vintage commercial 1976) BATON ROUGE

Del Lago: Baton Rouge first cocaine restaurant (vintage ad)

can you spot Barry Seals?

Vintage Baton Rouge "Del Lago" restaurant/dance club, coke scene commercial, 1976. what I know about Del Lago's: As the commercial indicates, it was the only hip establishment in Baton Rouge, maybe even New Orleans, at the time ca. '76, till closing in the 80s (or since). it took the place of Ruth's Chris now, as having been the den of choice for LA politicians, governors, mistresses, prostitutes, and plain old rich folks, who wanted to spend money, be seen, and party their asses off. Unlike Ruth Chris Steakhouse. Baton Rouge, Del Lago's was BR's first "cocaine scene." Their is also the famous story of David Bowie visiting after one of his 70s concerts at the Assembly Center, now called PMRC, meeting a busty woman and having a real good time. Located where Ninfa's Mexican Restaurant is on Constitution Avenue, near College Drive and I-10. Alan Boudreaux R.u. Allman Red Stick Punk Barry Seal

While the heyday of the disco era may have been the late 1970s, Del Lago—Baton Rouge’s answer to the national dance craze—was still seeing plenty of action in the early and mid-1980s. Locals may remember it fondly for the elevated dance floor in the center of the club or for its cheesy television commercials. In the late 1980s Del Lago closed and is now the site of Ruth’s Chris.

i can't stop thinking about how un-Baton Rouge this ad is (it even gleebs Rebel Rebel)!  Hopefully the administrators will allow it for its historical context; as this badass little spot must have expanded some Red Stick housewives' minds in 1976.  One year before the Sex Pistols came to town, this shit was goin' down.  A COCAINE RESTAURANT/NIGHTCLUB IN BATON ROUGE!  (my friend @Edwin Neil worked their starting around 1980.) here's what i wrote last night:  "Vintage Baton Rouge "Del Lago" restaurant/dance club, coke scene commercial, 1976. What I know about Del Lago's: as the commercial indicates, it was the only hip establishment in Baton Rouge, maybe even New Orleans, at the time ca. '76, till closing in the 80s (or since). it took the place of Ruth's Chris now, as having been the den of choice for LA politicians, governors, mistresses, prostitutes, and plain old rich folks who wanted to spend money and be seen doing it. Unlike Ruth Chris Steakhouse, Del Lago's was BR's first "cocaine scene. There is also the famous story of David Bowie visiting Del Lago's after his April 1978 concert, first of the Eno trilogy concerts at the Assembly Center, which i was fortunate enough to see and take photos, meeting a busty woman and having a real good time." Located where Ninfa's Mexican Restaurant is on Constitution Avenue, near College Drive and I-10.

And now Bennet Rhodes knows why I tagged Barry Seal. Please submit your own or friends' stories about this storied den of iniquity. i'll use it for my post, so as not to waste a good video. and if you like weirdass videos like this, this guy's channel where this lives has a bottomless supply of Baton Rouge commercials.

“I’d been getting bored with the stereotyped changes that were being used… and I kept thinking there’s bound to be something else. I could hear it sometimes. I couldn’t play it… I was working over ‘Cherokee,’ and, as I did, I found that by using the higher intervals of a chord as a melody line and backing them with appropriately related changes, I could play the thing I’d been hearing.

Danny Thomas First Spit-Take

Danny Thomas First Spit-Take

spit-take is a comedic technique in which someone spits a beverage out of his or her mouth when he or she reacts to a statement. In this context, the word "take" is used in the sense of taking in information. It is similar in construction to the phrase "double-take."

123video

Danny Thomas sometimes is credited with popularizing its use in comedy.

danny_thomas_spit_take.flv Watch on Posterous

Example: Two characters sit at a table. Character #1 has a cup of coffee in hand.

Character 1: Did they ever find that missing toxic sludge?
Character 2: Yes.
(Character 1 sips coffee.)
Character 2: Someone poured it into the coffee urn.
(Character 1 spits the coffee all over the table.)

In a spit-take, the reaction is usually one of surprise. The "spit" action is overly dramatized; performers will add lots of noise and spray liquid from their mouth in an exaggerated fashion.

The surprise need not be related to the substance being consumed; it is a vehicle to convey shock or surprise humorously with an exaggerated visual.

Example: Three characters sit at a table. Character #3, wearing a yellow sweater, has a cup of juice in hand.

Character 1: Hey, did you hear that laundry detergent can cause fatal psoriasis?
(Character 3 sips from cup.)
Character 2: Yeah, but only for people who wear yellow sweaters.
(Character 3 spits the drink all over the table.)

Albert Brooks' short film, The Famous Comedians School, features a workshop on spit takes.

Jon Stewart mentioned the spit-take on The Daily Show, Dec. 14, 2011, in the segment "Lowe's Balls of the Week." He also sometimes performs obviously-staged spit-takes as a running gag. [1]

[2]

I'm no Danny Thomas... But +Kendrick Jackson made me do a spit take during the chili beans/no beans debate that knocked my keyboard and computer out of commission for days.

Moral: Do not drink liquids while on Plus with the BadA.S.S. Posse.

That is all.

http://dallasjr.free.fr/images/fond.gif

http://dallasjr.free.fr/images/jrsondaj.jpg

Interview with Claude Bobin Author of the book "the odyssey of Ewing Dallas Texas" Claude Bobin How did you get the urge to write this book?

I just wanted to share my passion for soap operas Dallas and the like and then also get the message that these American productions are not just stories for public ébiles moron.

It seems that if one wants to bother looking for the meaning of stories Dallas tackles important issues like the rights of women rape alcoholism or homosexuality (which was a forerunner in 1978).

And then I regretted that most books about Dallas are never translated for the French public and therefore I proposed this book to my editor.

I confess that the most difficult to write this book was to sort of information available to me since I collect books and journals on the series for almost 20 years.

The first part is a selection of anecdotes and analysis on various aspects of the series.

I wanted this book is also a guide to the series and so I spent a lot of time writing the "novel" of the series since it was impossible in terms of place to recount each episode separately.

When did you iscovery Dallas?

I was 10 in 1981 when Dallas came to France.

I watched this with the whole family and it was part of the conversation Sunday as my aunts and uncles and my grandmother were also frequent viewers.

Later I started to keep the photos of the actors in magazines and then 'became a collection.

And when I started to work and have a little pocket money I buy books in the U S and my collection now includes hundreds of different objects.

What do you like in this series?

I want to say ALL.

I am a huge fan ...

More prosaically I love the characters especially Sue-Ellen is the only character for me to have really evolved over the seasons from the wife without major service to the alcoholic women to finish before the case can be face JR.

All other characters are also interesting as Bobby who manages to never fall into the slyness of his brother or funny as Lucy.

A very important element of the series is the image of the family that reference.

While Bobby and JR and Ray spend their time fighting that Sue-Ellen wants to send her husband to hell and Ellie sees a dim view of his senior shenanigans if someone outside has to attack the one of them he will face the entire clan.

A family near ideal.

And then there's the decor (the beautiful Southfork Ranch) actors and actresses (There is a pool not only for Southfork Kristin can drown but especially to have a reason to show finery Pam or Bobby ) and then the big ball gowns fights in the pool the right words ...

JR etc.

Dallas is also a door on many other things.

I have been discovered country music and participate in festivals or the atmosphere was great I been discovered Elvis Presley I wanted to go to the United States and I have been discovered a beautiful country ...

And then I even met some of my best friends through our shared passion for Ewing ...

What other modern and ancient series do you like?

I admit a certain nostalgia for many series of the 70s and 80s I rediscovered today by the grace of the DVD.

Of course I have the same passion for robs West and Falcon Crest as Dallas.

Dynasty tends to make me smile but I like its taken away "bling bling" before the time ...

I'm also a fan of Star Trek all series and movies with a preference still for Deep Space Nine, which combines good SF series removed a very pleasant.

I appreciate very much also to review episodes of Wonder Woman of the Six Million Dollar Man I also like Babylon 5 V (with Marc Singer) and many others.

In more recent series have been discovered the excellent Doctor Who and its spin-off Torchwood in the English television: the very good science fiction and more raises big questions.

I'm also a fan of Queer as Folk (American version of a British series that recounts the misadventures of five gay friends in a big city).

There are many good series on TV I find it unfortunate that we consider a series in France is a commercial product used to frame two spots pubs.

Do you have other books in preparation?

Before this book I wrote about Dallas a novel by science-fiction (I prefer to say Fantasy) kind of story called The Legend of Rumi and Len'rété.

He says the race against death of two men étenteurs a terrible secret that could affect the survival of their world.

Is also a story of love hymn to tolerance and a regard for our current society through the prism of fiction.

I am currently working on a saga that I probably was partly inspired by Dallas.

The story of an American billionaire and a slew of characters who will be around him a strange family.

Without revealing the substance of the plot thread of the story is a love triangle one of whose characters died in horrific circumstances.

I addressed all the issues that are dear to my Oeur: homosexuality childhood family secrets loneliness of death ...

The 3-volume novel entitled Until love between us are being released (the first 2 are available on 3 is planned between now and the end of 2008) Lready I work on a sequel to the best and the Empire.

I also have a project a little book about Star Trek, but for now I will say no more ...

See you in 2009 ...

Dallas
