BBC NEWS | Africa | Nigeria 'offended' by sci-fi filmNigeria 'offended' by sci-fi film
The film depicts aliens living in a South African shanty townNigeria's government is asking cinemas to stop showing a science fiction film, District Nine, that it says denigrates the country's image.
Information Minister Dora Akunyili told the BBC's Network Africa programme that she had asked the makers of the film, Sony, for an apology.
She says the film portrays Nigerians as cannibals, criminals and prostitutes.
An actor from the film said that it was not just Nigerians who were portrayed as villains.
The Malawian actor, Eugene Khumbanyiwa, plays a gang leader with the nickname of Obasanjo, also the surname of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The film is about alien refugees who set up home in a South African shanty town called District Nine.
It is a loose allegory about apartheid and recent violence by South Africans against foreigners.
It's not like Nigerians do eat aliens
Actor Eugene KhumbanyiwaMs Akunyili said it clearly took aim at Nigerians.
"We feel very bad about this because the film clearly denigrated Nigeria's image by portraying us as if we are cannibals, we are criminals," she said.
"The name our former president was clearly spelt out as the head of the criminal gang and our ladies shown like prostitutes sleeping with extra-terrestrial beings."

'It's a story'
The information minister said she had ordered the Nigerian film and video censors' board to ask all cinemas to stop showing the film and to confiscate it.
"I have also formally written to Sony Pictures Entertainment, the company that produced this film, demanding an unconditional apology for this unwarranted attack on Nigeria's image," she added.
She also said she had asked them to review the film with a view to remove "all offending portions that injured our image as a nation".
Ms Akunyili said said Nigeria was now hitting back with a policy of "rebranding", after allowing the international community to define the country based on the behaviour of "[a] few criminals".
She said that Nigeria's Nollywood film industry was also being pressed to help portray Nigeria in a better light.
But Mr Khumbanyiwa said Nigerians in the cast did not seem worried by the portrayal of their country.
He suggested that the film, which depicts people wanting to eat aliens to gain the superhuman powers, should not be taken too literally.
"It's a story, you know," he said. "It's not like Nigerians do eat aliens. Aliens don't even exist in the first place."

The first moving images of a couple's sex organs while in use is now available to view on YouTube
Dr Pek Van Andel's MRI sex video has thrust its way into an argument that periodically convulses the public and the courts. The video shows the first moving images of a couple's sex organs while those organs were in use. It gives graphic new life to a question as old as sin: what is pornography?
As used by Van Andel and his team, the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner lets us probe anew, and deeply, this legal and philosophical chestnut.
Justice Potter Stewart famously wrote in a 1964 US supreme court decision that defining which materials are pornographic is hard, but recognising them is easy. Quoth the justice: "I know it when I see it."
Laypersons watching the Van Andel video have a tougher time. During the short time it's been on the internet, around half a million people have taken a look. Many, unaccustomed to seeing medical imagery of internal organs, struggled to make sense of the unfamiliar shapes and motions. Their comments, posted on YouTube, make this clear. For every excited "AGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!", there is a baffled "???"
Some people express confusion. One wrote: "Took me a while to figure it out. I thought the man's torso was his penis."
Another hazarded that: "The dark spots on either side of the 'line' (their skin) are the bladders. The spines are at the outside edges. As best as I can tell it's the womb being bounced around so much."
A third explained: "It's obviously missionary. Anyone can see the spines of the man and woman are on the outsides, which shows they are facing each other."
A number of people do find stimulation, and perhaps even satisfaction, as expressed in this remark: "It kind of loses something with just the white noise audio ... Having said that, I still need a cigarette now."
Van Andel made the video in the late 1990s, but kept pretty quiet about it for a decade. He instigated and orchestrated the entire project at a hospital in Groningen, the Netherlands. He and three colleagues published a monograph in 1999, in the British Medical Journal. (Two co-authors, Ida Sabelis and Eduard Mooyaart, themselves engaged in intercourse in the MRI tube. Several other couples also contributed their all to the project.) A year later, the entire team was awarded an Ig Nobel prize.
Called Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Male and Female Genitals During Coitus and Female Sexual Arousal, the study includes two copies of an MRI midsagittal image of "the anatomy of sexual intercourse". In the second copy, labels and hand-drawn outlines identify the bits that are of medical significance ("P=penis, Ur=urethra, Pe=perineum, U=uterus, S=symphysis, B=bladder, I=intestine, L5=lumbar 5, Sc=scrotum").
Unknown to almost everyone, Van Andel asked the MRI technician to gather all the static images and assemble them together into a motion picture. The result: the 21st century's greatest challenge to easy assumptions about porn.

Look at it this way, at least it's not Wal-Mart. I know if I shop at a MEGA-store, it's Target. I can deal with a Target commercial.

Seriously, it's difficult to get worked up about this kind of spectacle from a band that you just couldn't take seriously in the first place. Pearl Jam will never make a "Revolver", a "Piper At The Gates of Dawn", a "Who's Next" or a "Nevermind", so an ad for Target becomes their legacy. I believe there is a lot of talent in Pearl Jam, but they've just never quite delivered. To quote Neil Young, who was supposedly a musical mentor to Pearl Jam, "This Note's For You."

I really don't get how this is selling out. Ya, the commercial is a bit odd, but the album is still available at indi stores. I could see how it would be bad if it was only available at target, but it's not It's just not available at any other major chain stores. So what, how is that selling out? Any so they did a commercial, who cares, they are trying to sell records. This is a band that sells concert tickets cheaper than most local bands do. This is a band who throughout the years have fought to protect their fans form unfair ticket charges. This is a band who travels to places that lose them money, because they know they have a big following in those places. This band has done more for their fans than almost any other band out there, and that is why they have such a loyal fanbase. They are far from sellouts, they are one of the only bands lef that still care about their fans.

I admit it. PJ is my guilty pleasure. Why I feel apologetic about this..I've no idea. Yes, I love fugazi, the minutemen, superchunk and billy bragg...but yes, I have also been known to listen to pearl jam. I had no idea they had a new album out either. (See? I'm old. I still say "album.") Ha. Anyway. I knew it was "over" when years ago I heard a minutemen song in a Nissan commercial....and a modest mouse song in another car ad. Hell, Volkswagon used a Nick Drake song ("Pink Moon"). I guess what I'm saying is...I understand that corporations co-opt subcultures and music....but does it make it right? (no.) Does it make me passive b/c I'm not more angry? (maybe?) Then again, is PJ not mainstream? Eh, I don't care. I still like them and I will always have a crush on Eddie Vedder. I just re-read this and it seems I'm having a conversation with myself. ;)

Woah. That was kind of disturbing. I mean, I know you and Pearl Jam are tight but...I am so glad Sleater-Kinney never did that. Whatever Pearl Jam's intentions were, there's no way an ad like that (with rockin projections of corporate logos and even a hand stamp) can fail to cheapen their song and make it difficult for people to take them seriously.
