Thomas Pynchon’s Banana Breakfast
Another literary recipe to celebrate Thanksgiving—
At the beginning of Thomas Pynchon’s massive tome Gravity‘s Rainbow, Captain Geoffrey “Pirate” Prentice cooks up a bodacious banana breakfast for a bunch of hung over army officers—
Routine: plug in American blending machine won from some Yank last summer, some poker game, table stakes, B.O.Q. somewhere in the north, never remember now….Chop several bananas into pieces. Make coffee in urn. Get can of milk from cooler. Puree ‘nanas in milk. Lovely. I would coat all the booze-corroded stomachs of England. . . . Bit of marge, still smells all right, melt in the skillet. Peel more bananas, slice lengthwise. Marge sizzling, in go long slices. Light oven whoomp blow us all up someday oh, ha, ha, yes. Peeled whole bananas to go on broiler grill soon as it heats. Find marshmallows. . . .
Here’s how it all turns out–
With a clattering of chairs, upended shell cases, benches, and ottomans, Pirate’s mob gather at the shores of the great refectory table, a southern island well across a tropic or two from chill Corydon Throsp’s mediaeval fantasies, crowded now over the swirling dark grain of its walnut uplands with banana omelets, banana sandwiches, banana casseroles, mashed bananas molded into the shape of a British lion rampant, blended with eggs into batter for French toast, squeezed out a pastry nozzle across the quivering creamy reaches of a banana blancmange to spell out the words C’est magnifique, mais ce n’est pas la guerre (attributed to a French observer during the Charge of the Light Brigade) which Pirate has appropriated as his motto . . . tall cruets of pale banana syrup to pour oozing over banana waffles, a giant glazed crock where diced bananas have been fermenting since the summer with wild honey and muscat raisins, up out of which, this winter morning, one now dips foam mugsfull of banana mead . . . banana croissants and banana kreplach, and banana oatmeal and banana jam and banana bread, and bananas flamed in ancient brandy Pirate brought back last year from a cellar in the Pyrenees also containing a clandestine radio transmitter. . . .

Unsolved Mysteries – It seems that a former Los Angeles street hustler named Tony Alamo, who had transformed himself into a religious cult figure in Arkansas, had disappeared owing the federal government $19 million. According to the TV show, the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service are looking for Alamo on tax evasion charges, as well as threatening a federal judge. There was more. When it became expedient to abandon the Susan and Tony Alamo Christian Foundation in Alma, Ark., Tony and some of his followers broke into a mausoleum and stole Susan Alamos body. Susan died of cancer in 1982, inadvertently removing the wind from the organizations sails….

ociated PressA Look at Each Charge Against Alamo:
The following is a count-by-count breakdown of the charges pending against Tony Alamo. Penalty ranges were acquired from istant U.S. Attorney Chris Plumlee. Count 1 Prosecutors allege that Alamo had sex with Jane Doe No. 1, now 17, while they traveled on his private bus to California in September 2004, when she was 13. She said Alamo married her at age 11. She currently lives in Colorado.
Later she was allegedly brought back to Arkansas and continued a sexual relationship with Alamo in his Fouke, Ark., residence. Under Arkansas law the alleged conduct constitutes rape. Count 2 The indictment accuses Alamo of having sex with Jane Doe No. 1 after she traveled from Colorado Springs, Colo., to Saugus, Calif. to Fouke, Ark. between August and October 2005 on the ministers orders. Prosecutors say she was 14 at the time. Count 3 Count 4 Jane Doe No. 2 allegedly was sent again by Alamo to Moffett, Okla., to visit her family in 2001. Alamo also allegedly summoned her again to his Fouke residence and continues her sexual relationship with him. She is now 18 and told jurors that child-welfare officials helped her find a job in Arkansas.
Count 5 Authorities say Alamo married Jane Doe No. 3 while he was in prison in 1998, when she was 14. They say she was sent to Oklahoma by him to allay her fathers fears that she was living with the evangelist. Her father was no longer a church member. Prosecutors say she later returned to Arkansas, where Alamo had sex with her. She is now 25. Count 6 Jane Doe No. 3 allegedly traveled with Alamo to Tennessee in 1999 and back to Arkansas, where their sexual relationship allegedly continued. Prosecutors say Jane Doe No. 4, allegedly married to Alamo at 15, traveled on a motor home to New Mexico with Alamo in 1994. The trip was supposed to end in California but ended early because a court date Alamo had regarding an ex-wife and children is postponed. She is now 33 and lives in Florida. Count 8 Jane Doe No. 4 allegedly traveled to West Virginia from Fort Smith, Ark., and back with Alamo in 1994 for a court date. Alamo had traveled there on a custody matter involving an ex-wife. Count 9 Jane Doe No. 4 allegedly traveled to Tennessee from Fort Smith at Alamos bidding in 1994, while he was on trial for tax evasion in federal court. Under Arkansas law, the alleged conduct constitutes carnal abuse. If convicted, Alamo could receive up to 10 years. Count 10 Prosecutors say Jane Doe No. 5 and Jane Doe No. 4 flew from Arkansas to California, where Jane Doe No. 5 was sexually aulted by Alamo. She was 16 then and is 20 now. The girls were all underage when the alleged crimes occurred though some were older when they traveled than when they married. Each of the 10 counts is punishable as well by a fine of up to $250,000.~ NICHOPOULOUZO

Michael Jackson (My Wildest West Dreams would have never predicted Tony Alamo and Bubbles)
Michael Jackson and country & western. So weird, right?
The Autry National Center doesn’t seem to think so.
Beginning August 17th, the Autry at Griffith Park in Los Angeles is opening an exhibit entitled “How the West Was Worn by . . . Michael Jackson“. On display will be a handful of items that showed MJ had at least a little bit of country in him.
Early last year, the museum had contacted MJ’s designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush to see if the entertainer would be interested in having a Western-themed clothing exhibit in his honor, to which MJ excitedly replied, “They want me?” After his passing, the designers made sure that it happened.
Included in the installation are a couple of bib-front shirts and trousers, as well some non-too cowboy-ish accessories (including a trademark fedora and crystal glove). The highlight is a satin, fringe trim costume designed by Warden Neil and worn by Michael in a vignette from the 70′s Jackson-family variety show, where Michael two-steps while singing “I Shot the Sheriff” (this particular ensemble was found in a flea market circa 1990 for mere pennies!).
Also part of the exhibit are these sick silver android boots and guitar-buckled belt which was worn in the famous photo that graced the cover of the single for “Beat It”.
