Marshalls break down door as sex offender tries to poison himself

U.S. Marshals arrested an absconded sex offender Thursday night and kept him from drinking a poisonous cocktail.

Teddie Lee Carroll, 44 was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force (FRFTF) in Orlando and had three outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Carroll was being sought by the Osceola County Sheriff's Office for Violating Probation by Failing to Register as a Sex Offender. The Indian River County Sheriff's Office was also looking for him on similar charges for Violating his Probation. He was also wanted locally by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office for Failure to Appear since 2005.

Carroll was originally convicted in 2000 in central Florida on charges of kidnapping, impersonating a police officer and lewd and lascivious assault on a minor. Carroll was later arrested for a second sex offense which involved raping a woman at gunpoint, but the charges were dropped after the victim refused to testify.

Several weeks ago the Marshals Task Force in Orlando contacted their counterparts here in Pensacola after learning that Carroll may be in Pensacola once again. The Pensacola task force conducted surveillances at several different locations in Pensacola for a couple of weeks before determining that Carroll was living at an address on the 2000 block of East Maxwell Street.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Thursday night, U.S. Marshals and task force members from Escambia and Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Offices approached the home and heard the front door being locked and someone run through the house. They then witnessed someone who resembled Carroll through a window ingesting something from a pill bottle and drinking something with it that appeared to be a large alcohol bottle.

Officers then forced the door open concerned for both Carroll and the officer's safety. Carroll immediately complied with commands and was detained.

He was then taken to Baptist Hospital as a precaution after learning that he had swallowed rat poison and possibly washed it down with gasoline. An interview of Carroll at the hospital revealed that he had not drank gasoline that was found in a small pill bottle but had in fact washed down a handful of rat poison with a mixture of vodka and iced-tea. Carroll was examined and cleared to be released to law enforcement who booked him into the Escambia County Jail.

The Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force in Pensacola is made up of officers from the U.S. Marshals Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton County Sheriff’s Offices, Milton, Pensacola, Ft. Walton Beach, Niceville and DeFuniak Springs Police Departments, State Attorney’s Office, the Office of Attorney General and the 1st Special Operations Security Force at Hurlburt Field.

Rat poison fails to kill sex offender

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. - U.S. Marshals say a sex offender with three outstanding warrants tried to poison himself with rat poison and alcohol as they kicked in the door to his house.

Officials say Teddie Lee Carroll, 44, was being looked for by the Oscecola County Sheriff's Office. He was wanted for violating probation by failing to register as a sex offender. He was also wanted on similar charges out of Escambia County, Fla.

Carroll was originally convicted in 2000 in central Florida on charges of kidnapping, impersonating a police officer and lewd and lascivious assault on a minor.

He was later arrested for a second sex offense which involved raping a woman at gunpoint, but the charges were dropped after the victim refused to testify.

When Marshals and deputies from Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties arrived at the house they believed Carroll was at, they heard the front door being locked and someone running through the house. Then they saw Carroll take something from a pill bottle and wash it down with something from a large bottle.

Deputies and Marshals broke down the front door, and took Carroll to the hospital. That's where officials found out Carroll had apparently swallowed the rat poison and gasoline. Authorities interviewed Carroll, and discovered he had taken the rat poison, but had washed it down with vodka and iced tea. He was examined and cleared.

Carroll was booked into the Escambia County Jail, where he's being held on no bond.

Look at it this way, at least it's not Wal-Mart. I know if I shop at a MEGA-store, it's Target. I can deal with a Target commercial.

Seriously, it's difficult to get worked up about this kind of spectacle from a band that you just couldn't take seriously in the first place. Pearl Jam will never make a "Revolver", a "Piper At The Gates of Dawn", a "Who's Next" or a "Nevermind", so an ad for Target becomes their legacy. I believe there is a lot of talent in Pearl Jam, but they've just never quite delivered. To quote Neil Young, who was supposedly a musical mentor to Pearl Jam, "This Note's For You."

I really don't get how this is selling out. Ya, the commercial is a bit odd, but the album is still available at indi stores. I could see how it would be bad if it was only available at target, but it's not It's just not available at any other major chain stores. So what, how is that selling out? Any so they did a commercial, who cares, they are trying to sell records. This is a band that sells concert tickets cheaper than most local bands do. This is a band who throughout the years have fought to protect their fans form unfair ticket charges. This is a band who travels to places that lose them money, because they know they have a big following in those places. This band has done more for their fans than almost any other band out there, and that is why they have such a loyal fanbase. They are far from sellouts, they are one of the only bands lef that still care about their fans.

I admit it. PJ is my guilty pleasure. Why I feel apologetic about this..I've no idea. Yes, I love fugazi, the minutemen, superchunk and billy bragg...but yes, I have also been known to listen to pearl jam. I had no idea they had a new album out either. (See? I'm old. I still say "album.") Ha. Anyway. I knew it was "over" when years ago I heard a minutemen song in a Nissan commercial....and a modest mouse song in another car ad. Hell, Volkswagon used a Nick Drake song ("Pink Moon"). I guess what I'm saying is...I understand that corporations co-opt subcultures and music....but does it make it right? (no.) Does it make me passive b/c I'm not more angry? (maybe?) Then again, is PJ not mainstream? Eh, I don't care. I still like them and I will always have a crush on Eddie Vedder. I just re-read this and it seems I'm having a conversation with myself. ;)

Woah. That was kind of disturbing. I mean, I know you and Pearl Jam are tight but...I am so glad Sleater-Kinney never did that. Whatever Pearl Jam's intentions were, there's no way an ad like that (with rockin projections of corporate logos and even a hand stamp) can fail to cheapen their song and make it difficult for people to take them seriously.

Nigeria 'offended' by sci-fi film

Handout still from Sony Pictures of District9
The film depicts aliens living in a South African shanty town

Nigeria's government is asking cinemas to stop showing a science fiction film, District Nine, that it says denigrates the country's image.

Information Minister Dora Akunyili told the BBC's Network Africa programme that she had asked the makers of the film, Sony, for an apology.

She says the film portrays Nigerians as cannibals, criminals and prostitutes.

An actor from the film said that it was not just Nigerians who were portrayed as villains.

The Malawian actor, Eugene Khumbanyiwa, plays a gang leader with the nickname of Obasanjo, also the surname of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The film is about alien refugees who set up home in a South African shanty town called District Nine.

It is a loose allegory about apartheid and recent violence by South Africans against foreigners.

Ms Akunyili said it clearly took aim at Nigerians.

"We feel very bad about this because the film clearly denigrated Nigeria's image by portraying us as if we are cannibals, we are criminals," she said.

"The name our former president was clearly spelt out as the head of the criminal gang and our ladies shown like prostitutes sleeping with extra-terrestrial beings."

'It's a story'

The information minister said she had ordered the Nigerian film and video censors' board to ask all cinemas to stop showing the film and to confiscate it.

"I have also formally written to Sony Pictures Entertainment, the company that produced this film, demanding an unconditional apology for this unwarranted attack on Nigeria's image," she added.

She also said she had asked them to review the film with a view to remove "all offending portions that injured our image as a nation".

Ms Akunyili said said Nigeria was now hitting back with a policy of "rebranding", after allowing the international community to define the country based on the behaviour of "[a] few criminals".

She said that Nigeria's Nollywood film industry was also being pressed to help portray Nigeria in a better light.

But Mr Khumbanyiwa said Nigerians in the cast did not seem worried by the portrayal of their country.

He suggested that the film, which depicts people wanting to eat aliens to gain the superhuman powers, should not be taken too literally.

"It's a story, you know," he said. "It's not like Nigerians do eat aliens. Aliens don't even exist in the first place."
