Happy Birthday, Joe Strummer

If he was still around, Joe Strummer would've been 57 today. The Clash is one of those bands that was so good, sometimes I can't believe they were real. I saw them when I was in 9th grade. It was after they had kicked Mick Jones out, but still. I stood right in front of the speakers and my ears rang for 3 days after. It was awesome.

Apparently, I also saw Alex Chilton that night! In googling to find out the exact date of that show, I found this here:

"Tav Falco & Panther Burns did in fact open both shows, but only at the Nashville show were they the full line-up--they played a full opening set at Vanderbilt in the basketball auditorium, but by the time they played Knoxville, the second guitarist and the piano player had quit and--of all people--Alex Chilton was drafted in to play guitar in their place, even though it immediately became clear to the audience that Alex obviously did not know the songs at all. The "band" played about 6 songs in total, and the booing got so bad that the drummer stopped playing several times to smile and sarcastically blow kisses at the audience."

I sure as heck don't remember that, but maybe that's when the seed of my Big Star/Alex fetish was planted. It's definitely when my affinity for bass players started. Hellooo, Paul Simonon!

Anyhoo, back to Joe and the Clash. Thought we could celebrate with a special edition of N+P TV.



I realize that Mick sings this song, but Joe Strummer just looks so freaking COOL in this video. Is there a DVD of the Shea Stadium concert?

Bikinis' big draw at property launch
WOULD you buy a piece of property because of 100 bikini-clad babes?

That's what a developer in Chongqing, China hoped, when it launched a new piece of real estate by organizing a bikini contest on site.

On Saturday, almost 100 girls showed up in bikinis in hopes of winning the 10,000 yuan ($2,100) grand prize money and the title of 'Golden Goddess' at the 'Bikini Fiesta', reported China News.

The developers even created an artificial beach in the middle of the construction site for the event. But the unusual marketing tactic has created some backlash. Some said that the cheesy set-up and use of scantily-clad women were too low-class and vulgar, and was degrading to the women of Chongqing. But others said the marketing stunt was a success, judging from the thousands of male gawkers who showed up. China News reported that the developer placed ads in several local newspapers to attract participants and draw a sizable audience to the bikini contest. It claimed that to create the artificial beach, it imported seawater from the Mediterranean region, and sand from a beach in Cannes in France, to create a lake and 1km-long beach. The event organiser had hoped to attract one thousand bikini babes to join, but less than 100 showed up.

Nevertheless, the sight of so many young women wearing bikinis was enough to attract thousands of eyeballs.

The development site was packed, with many using their cameras or anglophones to film and take pictures of the women.

Most of them, though, seemed to be there to look, but not to buy.

A member of the public, who was identified only as Mr Jingo, said:
