Memphis' Ardent Studios Mourn Loss of Jim Dickinson

Studio Founder John Fry Recalls His Touch of Greatness

August 18, 2009 -- DMN Newswire--2009-8-18--Ardent Studios founder John Fry and the extended family of musicians who were touched by the power of Jim Dickinson mourn the loss of a man who had much to do with shaping the "Memphis Sound."  Dickinson, whose career spanned more than four decades, died Saturday, August 15, at 67 in Jackson, Mississippi.  The Memphis native and longtime Mississippi resident had been in failing health for the past few months and was recuperating from heart surgery.

John Fry recollects the influence of Jim Dickinson on Memphis and Ardent Studios, "Our friendship and professional relationship spanned 45 years. Jim was the first independent record producer I ever worked with while I was still recording in the home studio I had built as a teenager. When Ardent opened as a commercial studio in 1966, Jim joined the staff as a producer/engineer and was instrumental in building the business during those first few years. The projects he worked on at Ardent over the decades are too numerous to mention, but two that stand out for me are Big Star's third album recorded in 1975 and the Replacements' 'Pleased To Meet Me'. Jim was a treasured friend to the Ardent family, and he will be sorely missed."

The father of Luther and Cody Dickinson, of the Grammy-nominated group North Mississippi Allstars, recorded and produced such great as Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Big Star, the Rolling Stones, The Replacements and Sam & Dave.
Many younger musicians today are heavily influenced by Dickinson's seminal work in the 60s and 70s when he explored the blend of rock, pop, blues, country, and rhythm and blues that became known as the "Memphis Sound." He collaborated with Ry Cooder on a number of movie scores, including "Paris, Texas;" and played with Dylan on his Grammy-winning return to prominence, "Time Out of Mind."

"He was an incredibly influential individual," Big Star drummer and Ardent Studios manager Jody Stephens recalled. "I think he defined independent spirit in music, and I think that touched a lot of people."

Luther Dickinson said that the family has no plans for a public memorial and that the tribute concert held in early August at Memphis' Peabody Hotel will stand as the farewell to their father.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician under investigation in the death of singer Michael Jackson, said in a video posted online Tuesday that he has "faith the truth will prevail."

In Dr. Conrad Murray's video, posted on YouTube, he tells supporters he has been receiving their messages.

Murray, who was with Jackson when he died, recorded the one-minute video in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday and it posted on YouTube Tuesday, the spokeswoman for his lawyer said.

"I have done all I could do," Murray said. "I told the truth, and I have faith the truth will prevail."

The video is the first public comment by Murray since Jackson's June 25 death.

"I want to thank all of my patients and friends who have sent such kind e-mails, letters and messages to let me know of your support and prayers for me and my family," Murray said. Video Watch the statement from Jackson's doctor »

"Because of all that is going on, I am afraid to return phone calls or use my e-mail. Therefore, I recorded this video to let all of you know that I have been receiving your messages," he said.

Murray, a cardiologist, owned and operated two medical clinics -- in Las Vegas, Nevada, and in Houston -- but he took a full-time job as Jackson's personal doctor in May as the pop singer prepared for his comeback concerts scheduled to start in July.

He was at Jackson's Los Angeles home when the entertainer was found unconscious and rushed to a hospital.

Investigators have searched Murray's home and clinics for evidence related to the anesthetic propofol, according to documents filed in court. A source close to the investigation told CNN that Murray is believed to have administered the drug -- also known by the brand name Diprivan -- to Jackson within 24 hours of his death.Murray has been "under siege" by the media and targeted by death threats in recent weeks, according to the spokeswoman.

"I have not been able to thank you personally, which, as you know, is not normal for me," Murray said in the video. "Your messages give me strength and courage and keep me going. They mean the world to me. Please, don't worry. As long as I keep God in my heart and you in my life, I will be fine."
