Here's some good fodder for those cocktail party/bbq conversations with the sports-loving kind this weekend: Michael Vick just announced that he's going to the Eagles as a backup QB for Donovan McNabb. It's the ultimate tale of redemption.
"This is America," [Eagles coach Andy] Reid said. "We do make mistakes, and in this situation [Vick] has a chance to prove he is doing the right things and I think the fans will be excited for him as long as he continues to do them. He's been proactive, speaking all over the country and working with the Humane Society."
Um, of course he's been proactive. He needs money! Is that totally Debbie Downer of me to say? The man had a great career that toppled, and he's getting a chance at a do-over.
It is unclear when Vick will be allowed to play in a regular-season game. As I mentioned in an earlier post, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally lifted Vick's suspension on July 27, allowing him to sign with a team, practice and play in the last two preseason games, beginning with the Eagles' home game against Jacksonville on Aug. 27.
Vick will not be allowed to participate in regular-season games until Goodell gives the OK. The commissioner said he would consider Vick for full reinstatement by Week 6 of the season, Oct. 18-19. So stay tuned to see how the drama unfolds during the season...
Kind of a random sign-off, but I leave you for the weekend with a very end-of-week-worthy video. This song, unlike chokers and bell bottoms, never goes out of style.
