"If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body ..."
(in some sources called
"If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body ..."),
(in some sources called
"If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body ..."),
Songwriter David Bellamy told country music journalist, Tom Roland that he regularly watched Marx's program, You Bet Your Life, where Marx sometimes used the quote, while interviewing an attractive female contestant, then shake his cigar and raise his eyebrows to elicit a reaction. The comment stuck in Bellamy's [David?] head as a possible hook line for a song."If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body ..." earned its first success in Northern Ireland, before becoming a hit in the United States. The song was also a minor hit on Top 40 stations, peaking at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100.Following the success of "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body ... ," the Bellamy Brothers would record several more songs that used double-entendre in their titles, most notably, their 1981, No. 1 hit "Do You Love as Good as You Look."VERSION 2
"It originated from a phrase coined by one the 20th century's most enduring comedians. I have to give credit for that line to Groucho Marx. That's going way back. Of course you've heard of the Marx Brothers. Groucho used to have a show on TV when we were growing up - which I hate to even admit how long ago that was - but he had a show called You Bet Your Life, and he'd have guests on, and different quiz questions. AndGrouchosmoked a cigar - that tells you how long ago it was, he smoked cigars on a TV show. He'd use that line occasionally, he'd say,
*'If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?'and shake his cigar and kind of raise his eyebrows."You Bet Your Life
You Bet Your Life premiered in October 1947 on radio on ABC and then on CBS and finally NBC and ran until May 1961 -- on radio only 1947-1950, on both radio and television 1950-1956, and on television only 1956-1961. The show was an utter sensation, one of the most popular in the history of radio and television. With one of the best announcers and, as it turns out, straight men in the business, George Fenneman, as his faithful foil, Groucho slayed his audiences with extraordinary improvised conversation, usually with the most ordinary of guests.OTHER POSSIBLE LYRICS

HIT COUNTRY SINGLES:MARX'S: I am able to dance until the cows come home. But I would rather dance with the cows until you come home.
BELLAMY'S: "I could dance with you till the cows come home. On second thought, I'd rather dance with the cows till you come home."
MARX'S: Whatever it may be, I am not for it.BELLAMY'S: "Whatever it is, I'm against it!"
- MARX'S: Besides a dog, a book is the best friend of a person. Inside a dog, it is too dark to read.
BELLAMY'S"Outside of a dog a book is a man's best friend, inside of a dog it's too dark to read."
So we had heard that line growing up, and our familyalways had a weird southern sense of humor, and they'd use that line around a lot.
*So it just came one day that it'd be a great song title."--Howard Bellamy
By the late ‘70’s The Bellamy's were emerging on the country charts with another boa ride smash.
“If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me),”[NOW!]*originally scrawled on a dinner napkin
by Davidrocketed them to the top of the country charts the way “Let Your Love Flow,” had done in the pop market just a few years earlier. It proved to be the first of a string of fourteen #1 singles in the U.S. alone."If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me"
by David Bellamy, was released in 1979 and became their first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Magazine's Hot Country Singles chart that spring.
Overall, "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body ..." was the Bellamy's second No. 1 song; their 1976 song, "Let Your Love Flow," topped the Billboard Hot 100.
lyricsIf I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me
If I swore you were an angel,
Would you treat me like the devil tonight
If I were dying of thirst
Would your flowing love come quench me
If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me
Now we can talk all night about the weather
Tell you 'bout my friends out on the coast
I could ask a lot of crazy questions
Or I could ask what I really want to know
Now rain can fall so soft against the window
The sun can shine so bright up in the sky
But daddy always told me,
"don't make small talk"
He said, "come on out
And say what's on your mind"

If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body
Live [Church Street Station]
Schitterend gezongen, en Live gezongen natuurlijk. Dat blijft meestal mooier omdat je dan pas goed hoort hoe ze werkelijk zingen. En dit is natuurlijk een zeer bekend nummer.

Beautiful sung, and sung Live course. This is usually better because you only hear how good they really sing. And this is a very familiar number.
really nice song-- mal33
