The
programme kicked off with a mention of Charles Manson. There is a
theory that Manson and his family were the originators of the Snuff
movie, by allegedly filming the terrible murder of Sharon Tate, the
then wife of director Roman Polanski. Rumours that the tapes got passed
round is said to be the first example of a want for Snuff videos.
The
documentary went on to review the first film regarded to be akin to a
Snuff movie, which was called Cannibal Holocaust. The film was littered
with beheadings, castrations and a girl impaled on a huge stake. The
film was shot in a haphazard 'documentary style' which led many to
believe that the film was filled with "real killing and torture".
Uproar and outcry inevitably followed, but looking back, it was plain
to see that it was no more than a B-Movie (complete with fantastic Moog
soundtrack).
The
notoriety of the film made it a huge success, which led to another
'video nasty' called Guinea Pig 2 - The Flower of Flesh and Blood. The
clips shown in the documentary were indeed difficult to stomach. One
scene included showed a Samurai hacking a young girl's hand off. The
thing that set this apart however was the overt sexual nature of the
film, which 'climaxed' with a shot of the murderous Samurai licking
blood from a decapitated head. Many believed the film to contain
genuine murder and torture (which is still believable even now) but
alas, it was a sophisticated special effects bonanza.
The
main difference between a video nasty, like for example, A Clockwork
Orange, and what is deemed to be a snuff flick is the nature of the
killings involved. Murder scenes don't make a snuff movie. It would
seem that the main thing that defines a snuff film is not just the
barbaric and unnecessary murder of someone, but the sexual nature
involved. It isn’t a case of, like one copycat murderer sentenced to
death in Japan in the early eighties, that a snuff movie should only
fulfil one person’s bizarre gratifications, but have some kind of
production value.
However, with the development of home video cameras,
it would become increasingly difficult for the police and censors to
determine which videos were fake, and which were real events.
Germany
saw the first real sign that snuff movies are not a thing of fiction.
Two German men kidnapped a prostitute and filmed the gruesome torture
and abuse of her. The victim had “suffered the most agonising pain
possible”. Hans Dieter Kausen and his accomplice were convicted and the
evidence needed was all on tape. This has sinister links to Mrya
Hindley and Ian Brady, who, if the means were possible, would have made
a snuff film of their moors victims, and when they made their tapes,
they had made “snuff audio”.
The
internet has seen an increase in snuff, as it has made the genre so
much easier to distribute and view. Daniel Pearl’s decapitation in Iraq
is a perfect example of the ease in which death can be distributed over
the web. ‘Happy Slapping’ is the latest link to snuff, and David
Morley, the first death in the craze that has apparently swept across
the nation.
The
programme doesn’t really confirm the existence of snuff films. It
certainly seems that there is a lack of evidence to support the claim,
but the makers have missed films such as ‘Der Todesking’ which contains
real death, and “Executions” a self explanatory film, which was briefly
on sale in Woolworths up and down the country.
It
would seem that deciding what defines a snuff movie is quite difficult,
but it has become the stuff of urban myth. Regardless of the lack of
proof or expose, ‘Does Snuff Exist’ was a fascinating look into the
darkest most despicable area of cinema.
The

Phil Spector used to take calls from Tina Turner and John Lennon, but now the only person who wants to work with him is mass murderer Charles Manson.
Manson is anxious to make music with the 69-year-old producer, who is serving life in prison for the shooting of actress Lana Clarkson.
Spector’s wife Rachelle told a U.S. newspaper: ‘A guard brought Philip a note from Manson.
‘He said he considers Philip the greatest producer who ever lived. It was creepy. Philip didn’t respond.’

Manson, 74, is being held at Corcoran State Prison in Los Angeles, where he is serving a life sentence for conspiring to murder seven people, including movie star Sharon Tate, in 1969.
‘I think Manson wants to glean some musical advice from Phil, who was a Sixties music god with his “Wall of Sound”,’ publicist Hal Lifson said.
‘But Phil’s like, “I used to pick up the phone and it was John Lennon or Celine Dion or Tina Turner and now Charles Manson is trying to get a hold of me!’’.’
Manson is being held in a separate wing to the producer of hits Be My Baby and Unchained Melody.
The cult leader was initially sentenced to death in 1969 for the deaths of movie star Sharon Tate, coffee heiress Abigail Folger and three others stabbed and shot to death at Tate's LA home.

Phil Spector could be allowed to take part in 'jamming sessions' with other inmates while he serves his life sentence for murder.
The 69-year-old music producer, who is classified as a medium security prisoner, has also been told he can keep personal items in his cell.
Spector was moved to the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility in California State Prison, after it was deemed he may be at risk of attack by other inmates.
A prison spokesman said: 'The facility he is on now, there are a bunch of inmates that have instruments and they all play together on the exercise yard.'
Spector, who worked with some of the music world's biggest names and was responsible for the 'Wall of Sound' production technique, may be allowed to join in.
He was convicted in April of the 2003 killing of actress Lana Clarkson.
He was convicted of second-degree murder in April after the first trial ended with a mistrial.
As a medium security prisoner he has a cell to himself and can make some requests for items he wants in his cell.
His wife, Rachelle, said a list was already being compiled.
‘He wants a TV and an iPod or something like that for listening to music - and he would like to be able to receive e-mail,’ she said.

Rachelle Spector said she was relieved her husband was out of North Kern State Prison, where he has been undergoing evaluation.
He had been forced to ditch his trade-mark wigs and posed for a less than flattering prison mug-shot which showed him to he bald.
Rachelle said Spector said he was forced to sleep naked on the floor for two nights and to eat out of a bowl with his hands ‘like a dog.’

The state prison in Corcoran, which houses 6,900 inmates, has played host to other entertainment figures in the past.
Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr served time there in 1999 for violating his probation in a drug conviction and ended up counselling other inmates before he was released.

Little more than two months since the US producer Phil Spector was sentenced to 19 years in jail, his publicist has said he's not coping too well.
The Wall of Sound pioneer was convicted of murdering actress Lana Clarkson at his home in May 2009, after a retrial.
"He's doing fair, at best, if not worse than fair. He's not doing great," said Hal Lifson about Spector's state.
Spector is currently residing in a medical facility at the Corcoran State Prison, central California.
The 68-year-old created some of the most memorable pop hits of the 60s for the likes of Ike and Tina Turner and The Ronettes.
"He's in a horrible situation with virtually nothing to do all day," explained Lifson to BBC 6 Music News, "Phil Spector was always a highly productive, creative person and now he's in a five by nine foot cell with no windows and maybe a half hour outside to walk around."
Not unexpectedly, Lifson said Spector's current existence is very limited.
"It's essentially solitary confinement," he said, "He doesn't have computer access, he only recently got a little TV.
"It's a terrible existence for a millionaire record producer who lived in mansions and most recently in a castle, a 35-room home.
"It's a huge, huge change of life for Phil Spector and a devastating turn in his life."

Meanwhile, Spector's publicist said he was "shaken" by a recent request from notorious convicted murderer, Charles Manson, for a musical collaboration.
Manson is in another maximum security section of the Corcoran State Prison.

The cult leader - who once worked with The Beach Boys - contacted the producer, who he revered as "the greatest who ever lived", via a note which he gave to a prison guard.
Lifson said Spector has no intention of responding to the message.
"Phil
Spector
has been very, very alarmed and scared at the notion of Charles Manson contacting him
for any reason," he admitted, "He is very worried that any association be made between himself and Charles Manson.
"He [Spector] mentioned that he used to get phone calls from John Lennon and Tina Turner and now it's Charles Manson calling, so he said, 'Go figure'.
"It was kind of a dark humour comment."
Spector is set to appeal in 2010 and if he fails at the state court of appeal, Lifson said Spector plans to go to the federal court of appeal in Washington.
