Three-Way Phone Call from God (MP3)

siiiiirrrr? Jerry Jordan -- Phone Call From God (13 MB mp3)
Ray Reeves -- A Phone Call From God (14 MB mp3)

God works in mysterious ways, and here's a pair of MP3s showing one of his strangest: a Christian comedy routine about an average Joe getting a phone call from The Man Upstairs. Although the concept sounds like it might be a Christian version of Bob Newhart stand-up, it's not exactly chock full of yuks (the high point is when the feller recalls what he said when he got his thumb caught in the linen closet, a joke which the canned laughter finds extremely amusing).

siiiirrrr?? What struck me most about these two versions of the same routine is that they're almost exactly the same. The pacing is slightly different between the two, but Jerry Jordan and Ray Reeves deliver EXACTLY the same monologue, as if they're reading from the same script. To prove my point, here's a stereo mix of the two versions (13 MB mp3), with the recordings pretty much synced up throughout. It's sort of like a Christian version of Claude and Clyde, the McBeeBee twins from old Bob & Ray shows (if you remember them, and being WFMU listeners there's a good chance that you do).

Visit to Pete Drake's gravesite in Nashville
Pete was a genius and patriarch of Modern Pedal Steel.

Haunting sound behind Dylan's Lay Lady Lay and a zillion other songs.

200810071716.jpg As I continually slimmed down my record collection over the years, the works of certain artists who I knew would never, ever come out on CD tended to be the ones that I kept. Translation: I have a weirdly lopsided record collection that veers sharply -- there is no "in between" to speak of, to be clear here -- from several dozen live PiL bootlegs to the collected works of one Jeannie C. Riley. Doesn't ring a bell? Remember "Harper Valley PTA"? Of course you do. Jeannie C. Riley was HOT, a late 60s/early 70s mini-skirted corn pone minx of the Nancy Sinatra variety, but Nashville style. Jeannie C. Riley was a staple on shows like Hee Haw and The Porter Wagner Show and things like that when I was a kid. I thought she was mega-sexy and over the years I collected each and every one of her long playingThe Rib. efforts, each record like the ones that came before it, and the ones to come after, each trying desperately hard to come up with another hit song, a second "Harper Valley PTA," if you will. Over and over and over and over and over again. Even if she never really had another hit song, some of the results are pretty great as you can see for yourself. Make sure to download the MP3 of her extremely nutty paen to modern womanhood,

Featuring Jeannie C. Riley's unbelievable country hit, The Rib. At first glance, it might appear that the poster-sized, triple-foldout album cover is the best thing about this album from Jeannie C. Riley (of Harper Valley PTAphotograph with your album purchase. (It took five passes on an HP ScanJet to capture the image -- if you're very brave, click it to see the 433K high res version). fame). After all, it isn't often that you get a stunning 36"
But, for all this, it's the music that counts. And the centerpiece of Things Go Better With Love is a song called The Rib. Like some kind of twisted, backwater, Limbaugh-approved version of feminism, The Rib seeks to extoll the virtues of womankind but doesn't want to risk offending the sensibilities of even the most chauvanistic male (probably a good plan, given the fact that Jeannie's legs seem to be one of the major selling points). The result is so farfetched that even after several listenings, I am still not sure what's going on. And Adam called me Woman... for I am The Rib.

The inside liner notes on my well-worn copy provide an address for the Jeannie C. Riley fan club (3106 Blemont Blvd, Nashville TN 37212) along with a message from Plantation Records that "This record is guaranteed against all defects including breakage, wearing out or any dissatisfaction on the part of the purchaser". So far, I haven't got any complaints.
