Grammy: Did Poppa Zuckerberg get another haircut today? Cuthbert Bede said "I wouldn't give a blank for such a blank blank. I'm blank, if he doesn't look as if he'd swallowed a blank codfish."

38 years of Grammys

Before we all lose our minds over World Health Organization's huge 30-somethingth annual Grammy Awards, it might be useful to recollect the Grammy, taken for what some people call their grandmother whose cognitive facilities for recollecting what streamed from where last year or yesterday have perpetually been lousy  размышля́ть, worse -- at predicting

-- having seen her husband predecease her at 90, married all but a third of that.

simply scrutinize who won most-coveted Grammy of the year over past three-plus decades.

really. check.

  • Beyoncé, the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Radiohead, Jay-Z.

What if the Grammy for album of the year — a prize whose responsibility to bottle correctly is often the topic redounding of record balancing innovation and time, inversely created, and then magically, as things go right with the world, a wide resonance and universal appreciation (but really those 300 people in CA whose niece likes it), is then felt by everyone in the world.

(In Grammy eligibility winsome Gregorian calendar Sept. 30 — the Sunday night Grammy's sit discharged in the final quarter of primary 3 quarters)

This inventory ought to have won something.

Should are nominated:

AC/DC, “Highway to Hell” chic, “Risqué” Marvin Gaye, “Here, My Dear”Kenny Rogers, “The Gambler”

Rolling Stone magazine delineated the soon-to-be-king-of-pop’s 1979 album “unforgettable;” however somehow, the Recording Academy forgot to nominate “Off the Wall” for its sparkiest prize in 1980.
Instead, the album’s lead single, “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough,” was placed for best discotheque recording (where it lost to Gloria Gaynor’s “I can Survive”) i laughed just now.
and best R&B vocal performance, male

As a corrective measure, the Academy inducted “Off the Wall” into its Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.
where it won Jackson the primary Grammy of his career

  • Popland like associate degrees in art are profusely colorful places to be, but not good for much, I mean, the Degree.

And, in 1989, except for some reason, Grammy voters had ratchet-toned rock-and-roll inflict them exurban-errant masterstrokes from Madonna, the B-52s, and Janet Jackson

electro-flagellate visitant of our hurried our ears.

This is a list of who should have won. It’s also a list of who could have won.

[Jay-Z leads this year’s Grammy nominations. Hip-hop hooray?]

1980

Album of the Year: Billy Joel, “52nd Street”

Other nominees: The Doobie Brothers, “Minute by Minute” Kenny Rogers “The Gambler”Donna Summer, “Bad Girls”Supertramp, “Breakfast in America”

Should Have Won: Michael Jackson, “Off the Wall”

Should have been nominated:

AC/DC, “Highway to Hell” Chic, “Risqué” Marvin Gaye, “Here, My Dear”Kenny Rogers, “The Gambler”

Rolling Stone magazine described the soon-to-be-king-of-pop’s 1979 album as “unforgettable,” but somehow, the Recording Academy forgot to nominate “Off the Wall” for its sparkliest prize in 1980. Instead, the album’s lead single, “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough,” was put up for best disco recording (where it lost to Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”) and best R&B vocal performance, male (where it won Jackson the first Grammy of his career). As a corrective measure, the Academy inducted “Off the Wall” into its Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.

1981

Album of the Year: Christopher Cross, “Christopher Cross”

Other nominees: Billy Joel, “Glass Houses”Pink Floyd, “The Wall”Frank Sinatra, “Trilogy: Past, Present, Future”Barbra Streisand, “Guilty”

Should Have Won: Queen, “The Game”

Should have been nominated: The Clash, “London Calling”Bob Marley, “Uprising”Tom Petty, “Damn the Torpedoes”Stevie Wonder, “Hotter Than July”

In addition to recognizing Queen’s chart-topping, disco-rock syncretism, the nominees at the 23rd Grammys should have included standout albums from Bob Marley and Tom Petty (neither of whom ever won album of the year); a Stevie Wonder album that helped make Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a national holiday; and a punk manifesto from the Clash that would have been too brash for a win, but was certainly acclaimed enough in 1981 for a nod.

1982

Album of the Year: John Lennon & Yoko Ono, “Double Fantasy”

Other nominees: Kim Carnes, “Mistaken Identity” Al Jarreau, “Breakin’ Away” Quincy Jones, “The Dude” Steely Dan, “Gaucho”

Should Have Won: The Rolling Stones, “Tattoo You”

Should have been nominated: The Go-Gos, “Beauty and the Beat”Dolly Parton, “9 to 5 and Odd Jobs”Talking Heads, “Remain in Light”Luther Vandross, “Never Too Much”

Still reeling from the horrific death of John Lennon, many Grammy voters seemed to cast their ballots — for his terrific 1980 album with Yoko Ono — in honor of his memory. Still, none of the recordings nominated for album of the year in 1982 felt completely deserving. And in overlooking “Tattoo You,” the last great effort from the Rolling Stones, Grammy voters missed their final chance to make good on one of their most biggest whiffs: the fact that the Stones had never won album of the year.

1983

Album of the Year: Toto, “Toto IV”

Other nominees: John Cougar, “American Fool”Donald Fagen, “The Nightfly”Billy Joel, “The Nylon Curtain”Paul McCartney, “Tug of War”

Should Have Won: Bruce Springsteen, “Nebraska”

Should have been nominated: The Clash, “Combat Rock”Joan Jett, “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll”Willie Nelson, “Always on My Mind”Prince, “Controversy”

We can still hear Toto’s legacy at karaoke night, but Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” sounds a lot more like an AOTY winner by contemporary standards — intimate, introspective and spare. But Springsteen has always been of his time, never ahead of it. He was a star in 1983 and “Nebraska” was his darkest, finest hour. (And speaking of songwriters who know something about introspection, it seems insane that Willie Nelson, one of the deepest minds in popular song, has never been nominated for album of the year.)

1984

Album of the Year: Michael Jackson, “Thriller”

Other nominees: David Bowie, “Let’s Dance”Billy Joel, “An Innocent Man” The Police, “Synchronicity”“Flashdance” soundtrack

Should Have Won: Michael Jackson, “Thriller”

Should have been nominated: David Bowie, “Let’s Dance”Marvin Gaye, “Midnight Love”The Police, “Synchronicity”Prince, “1999”

The Recording Academy got it right in 1984, but Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” should have only edged Prince’s resplendent “1999” by a vote or two — and “1999” wasn’t even nominated for album of the year. Neither was “Midnight Love,” a sumptuous songbook that etched the curves of Marvin Gaye’s voice into the greater American psyche for good.

1985

Album of the Year: Lionel Richie, “Can’t Slow Down”

Other nominees: Cyndi Lauper, “She’s So Unusual”Prince & the Revolution, “Purple Rain”Bruce Springsteen, “Born in the U.S.A.”Tina Turner, “Private Dancer”

Should Have Won: Prince & the Revolution, “Purple Rain”

Should have been nominated: Cyndi Lauper, “She’s So Unusual”Bruce Springsteen, “Born in the U.S.A.”Tina Turner, “Private Dancer”Van Halen, “1984”

It’s hard to argue that modernity has seen a more astonishing pop star than Prince — which makes it even harder to deny that the biggest blunder in Grammy history occurred on this fateful night in 1985, when the maestro’s masterpiece lost to the weakest nominee on the slate. Grammy voters got it exactly wrong. “Purple Rain” still feels exactly right.

[We’ve lost Prince, our single greatest pop star]

1986

Album of the Year: Phil Collins, “No Jacket Required”

Other nominees: Dire Straits, “Brothers in Arms”, Whitney Houston, “Whitney Houston”Sting, “The Dream of the Blue Turtles”USA for Africa, “We Are the World”

Should Have Won: Madonna, “Like a Virgin”

Should have been nominated: Whitney Houston, “Whitney Houston”Chaka Khan, “I Feel for You”Prince, “Around the World in a Day”U2, “The Unforgettable Fire”

“Like a Virgin” transformed Madonna from a promising pop singer into a national phenomenon, but if she had won album of the year in 1986 — and, of course, she wasn’t even nominated — she would have been just the fourth female solo artist to take that honor in the 28-year history of the Grammys.

1987

Album of the Year: Paul Simon, “Graceland”

Other nominees: Peter Gabriel, “So”Janet Jackson, “Control”Barbra Streisand, “The Broadway Album”Steve Winwood, “Back in the High Life”

Should Have Won: Janet Jackson, “Control”

Should have been nominated: Peter Gabriel, “So”Prince, “Parade”Sade, “Promise”Randy Travis, “Storms of Life”

Has Janet Jackson’s family name been her blessing or her curse? Because she sang so many of her hits in the shadow of her older brother, it’s easy to misjudge how close she was trailing behind him. And from this point forward, she was right there. “Control” was the first bright flash in a fireworks show that lasted more than a decade.

1988

Album of the Year: U2, “The Joshua Tree”

Other nominees: Whitney Houston, “Whitney”Michael Jackson, “Bad”Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, “Trio”Prince, “Sign o’ the Times”

Should Have Won: Whitney Houston, “Whitney”

Should have been nominated: Def Leppard, “Hysteria”Michael Jackson, “Bad”Prince, “Sign o’ the Times”U2, “The Joshua Tree”

While Grammy voters would overestimate U2 in the years to come, the band actually deserved top honors in 1988 for “The Joshua Tree” — but not as much as Whitney Houston, who had proven on her second album that her voice was the kind that lives forever. Meanwhile, hair metal was strutting toward its zenith, which means “Hysteria” by Def Leppard should have made the list, (but if we’re being realistic, not “Appetite for Destruction” by Guns N’ Roses, a band whose star rose after these ballots had been cast).

1989

Album of the Year: George Michael, “Faith”

Other nominees: Tracy Chapman, “Tracy Chapman”Bobby McFerrin, “Simple Pleasures”Sting, “. . . Nothing Like the Sun”Steve Winwood, “Roll With It”

Should Have Won: N.W.A., “Straight Outta Compton”

Should have been nominated: Bobby Brown, “Don’t Be Cruel”Jane’s Addiction, “Nothing’s Shocking”Metallica, “. . . And Justice for All”George Michael, “Faith”

This one is a stretch. But should it be? The American media had done its part to heighten public awareness to N.W.A.’s furious gangsta rap blueprint, and those who actually bothered to listen to the music instantly knew that they were hearing the future. N.W.A. should have been the first rap artists to win album of the year — but that barrier wouldn’t be crossed for another 15 years, with OutKast’s overdue victory in 2004.

1990

Album of the Year: Bonnie Raitt, “Nick of Time”

Other nominees: Don Henley, “The End of the Innocence”Fine Young Cannibals, “The Raw and the Cooked”Tom Petty, “Full Moon Fever”Traveling Wilburys, “Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1”

Should Have Won: Janet Jackson, “Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814”

Should have been nominated: B-52s, “Cosmic Thing”Madonna, “Like a Prayer”Tom Petty, “Full Moon Fever”Soul II Soul, “Club Classics Vol. 1”

Popland felt like an abundantly colorful place in 1989, but for some reason, Grammy voters had their ears locked on sepia-toned rock-and-roll, causing them to blank on exuberant masterstrokes from Madonna, the B-52s, and Janet Jackson, whose locomotive fourth album felt euphoric and important the moment it rushed our ears.

1991

Album of the Year: Quincy Jones and various artists, “Back on the Block”

Other nominees: Mariah Carey, “Mariah Carey”Phil Collins, “. . . But Seriously”MC Hammer, “Please Hammer . . . Don’t Hurt ’Em”Wilson Phillips, “Wilson Phillips”

Should Have Won: Depeche Mode, “Violator”

Should have been nominated: Garth Brooks, “No Fences”Mariah Carey, “Mariah Carey”LL Cool J, “Mama Said Knock You Out”Sinead O’Connor, “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got”

As the ’80s melted into the ’90s, the sounds of new wave receded like undertow, with Depeche Mode stylishly sinking into the darkness. This year also marks the first AOTY nod for a rapper — only it should have been LL Cool J. And if Grammy voters weren’t ready for “Mama Said Knock You Out,” they certainly weren’t ready for Public Enemy’s“Fear of a Black Planet,” Ice Cube’s “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted,” or even Salt N Pepa’s still-slept-on “Blacks’ Magic.”

1992

Album of the Year: Natalie Cole, “Unforgettable . . . With Love”

Other nominees: Amy Grant, “Heart In Motion”Bonnie Raitt, “Luck of the Draw”R.E.M., “Out of Time”Paul Simon, “The Rhythm of the Saints”

Should Have Won: Garth Brooks, “Ropin’ the Wind”

Should have been nominated: Boyz II Men, “Cooleyhighharmony”Metallica, “Metallica”R.E.M., “Out of Time”A Tribe Called Quest, “The Low End Theory”

Here’s where the Grammy’s eligibility window starts making things feel nonsensical. Three paradigm-shifting rock albums — Nirvana’s “Nevermind,” Pearl Jam’s “Ten” and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Blood Sugar Sex Magic” — were released in 1991, but they didn’t reach critical mass until 1992, and by then, it was too late to write them into the Grammy history books. That said, there was no reason to ignore Garth Brooks, whose open-armed, multiplatinum “Ropin’ the Wind” had proven that country singers were capable of achieving superstardom.

1993

Album of the Year: Eric Clapton, “Unplugged”

Other nominees: K.D. Lang, “Ingenue” Annie Lennox, “Diva” U2, “Achtung Baby” “Beauty and the Beast” soundtrack

Should Have Won: Sade, “Love Deluxe”

Should have been nominated: Beastie Boys, “Check Your Head” En Vogue, “Funky Divas” Prince, “Diamonds and Pearls” U2, “Achtung Baby”

à mélange l'étouffée crêpe ochinggômbo filé gallimaufry

  • Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday

  • In the United States, it is best known as the New Orleans celebration of carnival that leads up to Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent and fasting.

  • Incidentally, carnival is from Italian carnevale, meaning literally "removal of meat."

  • Mardi Gras is also known as Shrove Tuesday from the practice of going to confession during the Lenten season; shrove is from shrive, an archaic verb meaning "to confess one's sins especially to a priest."

  • Gumbo/Jambalaya

  •  Gumbo is a legendary Southern soup that is thickened with okra pods or filé (the powdered leaves of sassafras). It is a mélange of meats, seafood, and usually vegetables.

  • Gumbo is also a word for the tall okra plant itself having the mucilaginous, green pods.

  • The word gumbo is adapted from American French gombo, which is of Bantu origin and akin to Umbundu ochinggômbo, a long word for "okra." Jambalaya is a creole food that has similar ingredients. It is a gallimaufry of such meats as ham, sausage, chicken, shrimp, or oysters balanced with vegetables. The key difference between gumbo and jambalaya is rice. If rice is served separately, it's gumbo; if mixed in the dish, it's jambalaya.

  • Crayfish (or crawfish) is the name used for small crustaceans that look like little lobsters without the big front claws.

  • Since crustaceans live in the water, the -fish of crayfish is logical; however, it has nothing to do with the word’s origin.

  • Crayfish is an altered form of the Middle English word crevis, which derives from the Anglo-French word creveis, which had the stress on the second syllable.

  • This syllable was heard and repeated as -fish frequently enough to alter the word toward the more English-sounding name of the aquatic animal.

  • This transformation of the word so as to make it better understood is known as folk etymology.

One entrée with crayfish to consider for a Mardi Gras lunch or dinner is an étouffée, a Cajun stew of shellfish (or chicken) served over rice. The base of the stew's name is French à l'étouffée, meaning "braised."

  • There's a special Mardi Gras celebration menu tonight and tomorrow.… Entrees are blackened redfish, breast of chicken Pontalba, shrimp and crayfish etouffee.

  •

  • The catfish is a type of fish with a distinctive face having tactile barbels, which look like cat's whiskers, around its mouth. It is especially enjoyed in the South, where their meat is usually dredged in cornmeal and fried.

  • Catfish as a name for a person who set up a false personal profile on a social site is based on the title of Ariel Schulman's 2010 documentary of the same name.

In it, an anecdote is given about how fishermen transporting live cod used to put catfish in with them on long-haul shipments to keep the desirable cod active and alert until arrival—the implication being that the catfish keeps the lives of others fresh and interesting.

    Muffuletta/Po'boy

  • The muffuletta sandwich—filled with salami, ham, cheese, and olive salad—is a New Orleans classic and a staple of any Mardi Gras party. It is a creation of Italian immigrants who arrived in New Orleans in the late 1800s and early 1900s—hence, muffuletta is Italian.

  • The name's origins likely include the Italian word muffoletta meaning "little muff," that word itself being a diminutive of muffola, "muff," from the French moufle, meaning "mitten."

Another satiating sandwich from New Orleans that was created in the early 1900s is the poor boy, which originally consisted of two slices of French bread holding meats, fried oysters, or whatever was on the menu at the time of ordering. It is more commonly known as the po'boy(a representation of southern U.S pronunciation).

  • There are a few origin stories on the sandwich's name to chew on.

  • We can only say with confidence that a common figure among them is the poor people during the Great Depression.

  • Andouille

  • Andouille is the name for a highly spiced, smoked pork sausage that was borrowed from French in the beginning of the 17th century. It ultimately comes from the same Latin word that gave us induce, but by way of a Vulgar Latin word meaning "made by insertion." (We are talking sausage, after all.)

  • This quote tells you just how much Louisianans love their andouille:

  • He said the company was getting ready to make 900 pounds of andouille sausage Wednesday—one of its staples as Mardi Gras approaches.

  • — Bryce Gray, The St. Louis (Missouri) Post-Dispatch, 27 Jan. 2021

  • Grits

  • Grits is a plural noun that refers to a type of ground corn that is eaten especially in the southern United States.

  • Its exact etymology is unclear, but it might have been influenced by grit, meaning "sand" or "gravel," as well as dialectal grit, meaning "coarse meal."

  • Whereas the "sandy" grit goes back to Old English, the "breakfast" grits dates to the 16th century.
  • Grits can be eaten as a meal itself or as a side to a Mardi Gras omelet.

  • A hush puppy is a small, deep-fried ball of cornmeal dough, and a traditional foodstuff in the southern U.S. One possible, but completely unsupported, explanation for its name is that a simple version of the dough ball was first made by various people—such as Union soldiers during the Civil War, fishermen, or runaway slaves—to "hush" howling dogs.

  • The Mardi Gras menu includes entrees such as crab cakes, bacon and pepper jack hush puppies, fried oysters, Po'Boy sandwiches, muffuletta sandwiches and etouffee.

  • — Aimee Blume, The Evansville (Indiana) Courier and Press, 5 Feb. 2021

  • King cake

  • A popular Mardi Gras dessert is king cake, a sweet ring-shaped cake traditionally with a symbolic bean or figurine of the infant Jesus inside that is served from the Epiphany to Shrove Tuesday. What's the purpose of the choking hazard? This quote explains:

  • Of course, no one does king cake quite like New Orleans. It's decorated in the colors of Mardi Gras—purple (to represent justice), green (faith) and gold (power)—as chosen by one of the city's first Mardi Gras organizations, or krewes. A token or trinket—usually a plastic baby symbolizing the infant Jesus—is hidden inside. Whoever finds the baby may be crowned king or queen of the party; more important, that person is responsible for bringing the cake to the next gathering.

  • — Noelle Carter, The Los Angeles Times, 16 Feb. 2012

  • Beignet

  • The original beignet was a fritter. Its name was kneaded from French words meaning "bump" or "bruise," which perfectly fits the small, lumpy fried mass of batter that is often filled with something sweet or savory. In the U.S., and especially in New Orleans, a beignet is something different: a light, puffy square doughnut usually sprinkled with powdered sugar and eaten whenever a craving for it strikes.

  • In South Jersey, the French-themed Woodbury Station Cafe in Woodbury also offers both the pillowy, powdered beignets homemade and chickory coffee, not just for Mardi Gras but daily for breakfast or lunch, along with crepes.

  • — Carol Comegno, The Courier-Post (Cherry Hill, New Jersey), 19 Feb. 2020

  • Bananas Foster

  • Bananas Foster is a yummy dessert of sliced bananas cooked with butter and brown sugar that is set aflame with a high-octane rum; it is served with ice cream to cool things down. Its namesake is a Richard Foster who was a friend of the New Orleans restaurateur Owen E. Brennan, at whose restaurant the dish was first created sometime mid-20th century.

  • Dessert was a difficult choice, because New Orleans is famously home to an impressive number of great desserts—beignets, pralines, Bananas Foster, pecan pie and king cake, among others. After relatively little thought, I chose bread pudding. With bourbon cream sauce.

  • — Daniel Neman, The St. Louis (Missouri) Post-Dispatch, 3 Feb. 2021

  • Praline

  • Praline (pronounced PRAH-leen or PRAY-leen) is the name of a confection of nuts and sugar. The original pralines, made in France in the 1600s, were almonds cooked in boiling sugar until brown and crisp and sometimes ground into a soft paste. When the French arrived in Louisiana, they used the local sugar cane and pecans and adjusted their recipe by adding salt and light cream to make their distinctive, creamy candy. The word praline comes from the name of 17th-century French Field Marshal Comte du Plessis-Praslin, because his cook made the first sugar-coated almonds.

  • Pecan also has a French heritage, the American French pacane. That word is from Illinoispakani.

  1. it is my first time to see it.

  2. I think through my facebook page for the band and my recurrent Tweets with the Hashtag of #ourfavoriteband or OFB on all big three Social Media platforms, FB, Instagram, Twitter, it has only taken our one-album one EP band from 1981 - 1991 thirty years to get a beautiful Google Box which I will fastidiously link to and from, finally sit down and do proper meta, JSON, and EVEN those ridiculous other ones where everything has an object tab like: band, duo, 1980s, Baton Rouge, LA - Nashville, TN, etc.

  3. I tried once and literally through the computer across the room.

  4. I do know how to code CSS though.

  5. But I'm not learning anymore new ones.

  6. I did the same thing with records, cassettes, CDs.

  7. And I'm not doing that again.

  8.

this video clip represents a rough edit for a proposed OFB Music Video which was to have coincided with the release of their debut album.

  9. Produced by New York filmmaker (Searching For Cormac) and television producer (The Men Who Killed Kennedy-PBS), Eric Davies, this document now serves as one of the only (the only Online example) extant videos of a rare live Our Favorite Band performance, filmed at 'The Bayou', their preferred venue for local performance and watering hole of choice (no longer open for business, this bare, college drinking establishment was featured in Steven Sodeberg's first feature film, 'Sex, Lies, and Videotape').

  10. Located on Chimes Street in the geographic center of the Huey Long-built Louisiana State University campus of the Capital City of Louisiana, 'The Bayou' was the premiere proving ground for any band who professed sensibilities toward Punk/New Wave in the tumbleweed days of the form.

  11. With its health mixture of Rednecks, Academics, College Professors, Cocaine Dealers and LSD Throwbacks in Hawkwind tees, its roster ran the gamit from Southern Rock 'n' Roll to Country and Western, and hosted nearly every local and touring band on their way to or from New Orleans.

  12. The song which this video partially documents is entitled Dreamin' of Eternity (in the Bosom of Sweet Jesus), and featured on their LP, REM's Michael Stipe
, performing his first and only duet guest appearance before or since.

  13. We hope you enjoy catching a glimpse of the reclusive Steely Dan of the Swamps duo in an incomplete but fully representative performance in their natural Louisiana habitat, well-oiled and still wet from coming out of the swamp.

  14. Thanks, Google
