According to Carol Kaye, "Arranger Billy Strange believed in using the two basses together. Producer Lee Hazlewood asked Chuck to put a sliding run on the front of the tune. Chuck complied by playing notes about three tones apart (4-6 frets apart), but Lee stopped the take. "No Chuck, make your sliding notes closer together", and that is what you hear."

According to Al Casey, "Well, Lee and I had been friends forever, and he said, "I've got this song I'm working on, and I want the guitar to play this." And he showed me, because there's a little bit more than banging on an 'E-chord', which is what most people do. There's more to it than that. He said, "I want you to do this on the song.", and he sang the song and played the rhythm guitar lick,
"and I went "Oh, that's cute!", little suspecting it was gonna be huge."

The song's lyrics were changed almost completely as Simpson felt that they did not accurately convey the feelings needed for the film; in the original Sinatra dealt with a cheating boyfriend, while in the new version Simpson version explore Daisy Duke's personality and experiences. She rewrote the majority of the lyrics herself, although some elements were retained such as the opening line "You keep saying you got something for me..." and the spoken "Are you ready, boots? Simpson also added some new music to her version of the song. Whereas the original version did not have a bridge

Likebutton.me shows Facebook's new 'like' button is not completely evil | CNET to the Rescue - CNET Blogs

I'm working on a story about understanding and managing Facebook's new privacy options. I'm trying to find the silver lining in the story from the consumer's perspective, so I can present reasonable options other than "just turn it all off!"

Here is one positive thing to emerge: Likebutton.me. It's an aggregation site that reminds me of PopUrls, but instead of just taking headlines from a bunch of sites, it takes the items your Facebook friends "like" and shows them to you on the top of the story lists, followed by stories liked by the entire world of users. If you've got a good network of friends, it's a good dashboard view of what your clan finds interesting.

It's lacking in customization options. You can't drag the tiles around or delete items you don't want, for example (although you can display links in just one category at a time, like "Tech"). But the site was only created two days ago by developer Zachary Allia. He told me, "I built it this weekend after attending the F8 conference. I wanted to see if I could build something useful using only the new tools they announced." So we'll give it time to mature. And for new competitors to emerge. And for sites like Netvibes and PopUrls to figure out how to use the new Facebook features.

Likebutton.me is a news aggregator with a Facebook twist.

I'm still reserving judgment on the risks versus benefits of Facebook's recent privacy changes, but in the meantime, I like Likebutton.

Developers Experiment with New Search, Aggregation Products Based on Facebook Data

Facebook released new plugins and raw data last Wednesday at its f8 developer conference, making it easier for developers to create apps based on larger amounts of data. The more ambitious experiments on this front will likely take longer to materialize, but here’s a quick look at what developers have already been able to do in the past few days since the launch.

Note that there are a few different ways developers are experimenting. The simplest way is to create aggregator and search sites for publicly shared data; the more interesting but difficult options means accessing Facebook Graph API data, then analyzing the data and combining it into other aggregator and search services.

Before we look more closely, here’s some context. Although Facebook has made some user data available to third parties for years, it has done so through Connect and its application platform. The Open Graph data makes already-public data like friend lists much more easily available. Its terms of service have changed to match. Since December, Facebook has been aggressively pushing users to share more data, making some criteria like names, profile pictures and friend lists public by default. Most recently, it required users to select Pages for interests, education and other aspects of their personal profiles — and because that Page information is public, that user data is now, too.

The cost has been some upset users, privacy groups and legislators (by the way, if you want to see what you’re already sharing publicly, check out this service).

However, Facebook has made more user data than ever available for other companies to build their businesses on top of, so we should begin to see more fruits. Facebook wants to make itself more important to other businesses around the web, better accomplishing its mission of being a social layer that both extracts value from and gives back to the web ecosystem. Of course, how Facebook controls access to its user data gives it leverage over companies that decide to use the data going forward. As with any platform, developers and entrepreneurs should carefully weigh the costs and benefits of using data from Facebook.

Aggregation

Two sites are aggregating shared items from Facebook’s Recommendations Plugin across online media web sites: Like Button and ItsTrending. Both show the same data in quite similar interfaces, displaying what your Facebook friends are “liking” and otherwise sharing on different sites, as well as overall numbers for how many Facebook users have shared each item. They are able to do this because Facebook lets developers access publicly-shared data by users and their friends, based on each users’ social graph; however, you’ll need to be logged in to Facebook in order to see personalized results on these widgets.

Aggregation in general has proven to be a decent business. Sites like Digg and Reddit use humans to do the aggregating — these plugins give a broader look at what’s being shared than those sites simply because Facebook is so much bigger. Yet those sites have active communities who are focused on finding and sharing news; although Facebook duplicates some of this functionality, it has so far been focused on private sharing.

More sophisticated aggregation could allow these new companies or others to better compete against the human-powered aggregators. But given the simplicity of the implementation, it’s not clear how any particular one will break out in appeal to users.

Another interesting example of an aggregation business is Tweetmeme, which looks at public tweets (which are most of them). Although its core service uses the same data that anyone else has access to, it has managed to break out and grow along with Twitter, and it has built out its service to be a main way for users to find top tweets by category. Perhaps Facebook plugin aggregators could provide similar refinements?

Beyond plugins, the Graph API data could be used to better tune what items rise to the top of their front pages. Combining active Digging with aggregated data from Facebook might help tune the top stories to a more general audience, for example. For an example of this, check out Fwix, a news site that has just incorporated some Facebook data to help people create and share customized categories of news.

Facebook has made some of this data publicly available since last fall, including public likes and shares. But that effort illustrates how its value depends on the developers’ needs. For example, news aggregator Techmeme, which algorithmically scours sources including content sites and other aggregators to figure out the top stories of the moment (with the help of human editors), has been using the data to help tune the top news that its sites feature . However, founder Gabe Rivera tells us that this Facebook data has had a “small impact” on how the company determines the value of stories.

Search

While aggregation is meant to bring the information that matters to users, search is intended to help them find what they want for themselves. Search is an obviously huge business, with technology market leader Google and smaller competitors like Yahoo and Microsoft trailing behind.

Facebook has been making data public intentionally so it will appear in search engines, as a way to play a bigger part in this market. The privacy changes have already increased the number of user status updates in search results, but so far Facebook has been providing the data manually to big search companies through business deals, including ones with Microsoft and Google. The Graph API now enables far more searching options, as we covered in more detail here.

Simple tools already take advantage of this. A prototype-style site called Open Facebook Search let you search anything public that Facebook is tracking from outside the site. You don’t need to be logged in to access the data.

A more interesting use of the Graph API is from OneRiot, a company that aggregates real-times searches. From the company blog, yesterday:

Until today, we’ve been indexing the links shared on Twitter, MySpace, Digg, Delicious and by our own OneRiot panel to help determine our search results. Now, with the addition of Facebook data, OneRiot delivers search results that reflect the pulse of a much, much wider social web.

The screen shot below shows what this looks like on OneRiot search results pages. You can see that I searched for “iPad” to find the latest buzz (this screen shot was taken last week). Because our results are informed by what links people are sharing on the social web, we attribute each result to the person who shared it first. We also indicate what service they shared it on. You can see in the screen shot that the third result was first shared publicly by a user on Facebook.

We expect search engines large and small to continue expanding their use of publicly-available data, as they have in the past year. Social data from Facebook could help improve the social relevancy of everyone’s results. Facebook itself could become a tighter part of the Facebook ecosystem. Hitwise: “Facebook” was Top Search Term in March

By Sara Inés Calderón Add Comment »

Experian Hitwise announced today that Facebook was the top search term in the United States during the four weeks ending on March 27, accounting for eight of the top searches across three separate top 10 lists. Search terms like “facebook,” “facebook login” and “facebook.com” amounted to 1.17% of Google’s search traffic, 1.7% of Yahoo’s and, not surprisingly (given its convenient in-Facebook location), 2.6% of Bing’s.

Facebook was the number 1 and number 3 searched terms on Google, Yahoo and Bing, the three search engines surveyed by Hitwise. Facebook mingled with email services like Yahoo mail and Gmail, craigslist, ebay, YouTube and MySpace on the top 10 lists.

Earlier this month we reported that Facebook had become the most searched-for brand in the U.S., also according to Hitwise, accounting for 2.8% of all searches in the country during the last week of March. Even while Facebook as a search term is growing, the social network’s own search query volume has also been growing. As we previously reported, Facebook approached the volume of one of the smaller search engines, Ask, with 647 million queries in March, about 2.7% of all U.S. searches.

Bobbie, Bing and Tiny Tim sing a snippet of "In The Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening" AND "True Love" From The Hollywood Palace, Jan. 1969.

From The Hollywood Palace, Jan. 1969. The Hollywood Palace was an hour-long television variety show produced by Nick Vanoff. It was broadcast weekly (generally on Saturday night) on ABC from January 4, 1964 to February 7, 1970. It began as a mid-season replacement for the short-lived Jerry Lewis Show, another variety show which had lasted only 3 months. It was staged in Hollywood at the former Hollywood Playhouse on Vine Street, which was renamed The Hollywood Palace during the show's duration and is today known as Avalon Hollywood. Unlike similar programs such as The Ed Sullivan Show, guest hosts were used instead of a permanent one. Among the performers and hosts on the show were Bing Crosby, Bette Davis, Frank Sinatra, Milton Berle, Sammy Davis Jr., Sid Caesar, The Rolling Stones, Groucho Marx, Tony Bennett, Judy Garland, Jimmy Durante, The Supremes, Ginger Rogers, The Temptations, Phyllis Diller, and many other famous faces. The off-screen announcer for each program was Dick Tufeld. A number of popular music performers got their start on the show. For example, The Rolling Stones made their first US television appearance June 13 1964, and The Jackson 5 made their first national television appearance on the October 14, 1969 episode of the show. The folk-rock group We Five performed their hit You Were on My Mind within a few weeks of its being released in 1965. In a famous June 1964 telecast, controversy ensued when The Rolling Stones, upset with guest host Dean Martin's sarcastic comments directed at them throughout the program, refused to perform a second scheduled musical number. In 2004, Hollywood Palace returned to television, produced by Margate Entertainment Company, the trademark owner of Hollywood Palace. The first episode starred TV icon Peter Marshall and featured guests Marty Allen, a regular on the earlier version, and legendary 1950's singer Don Cherry.

Google Googles Out of China: Rather Leave for Freedom than Live for the "River Crab"

image March 23, in front of Google Beijing Headquarters

Google , Rather Leave for Freedom than Live for the "River Crab" (River Crab an internet slang created by netizens in Mainland China. The word river crab sounds similar to the word harmonious in Chinese Mandarin)

Google Chose to Leave

After two months’ negotiation with Chinese government, Google made a statement at three am in the morning on March 23rd 2010.  Google declared the search engine company has formally withdrew from mainland China. In its statement, Google said, “We very much hope that the Chinese government respects our decision, though we are well aware that it could at any time block access to our services.”

Users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to its Hong Kong site, Google.com.hk, with a line on the homepage saying, “Welcome to Google’s new home in China.”

China's coverage

Overseas media have given thorough coverage over Google’s decision to leave the Chinese lucrative market. Large media houses such as Reuters, Voice of America, FRI, Radio Free Asia, Lianhe Zaobao and Wall Street Journal all put it as the headline news on their websites. New York Times, BBC, Central News Agency(CNA)Deutsche Welle, Times, and Washington Post also put this news on prominent place in their front page. In China, the Xinhua News Agency only has a 39-word message about Google.cn being redirected to its Hong Kong site. The Internet Administration Office ordered its people to remove any posts that is pro-Google, doing everything they can to remove supporters for Goole.

In the real world, many Netizens paied they tribute to Google by sending flowers to its Beijing Headquarter, other writers have donated their royalties to Google.

Secret China received letters from readers, saying that lots of netizens went over to Google Beijing Headquarters to deliver the flowers personally. Eight hours after the announcement there were groups of people gathering outside the building and the number was increasing. The letter said that in the afternoon or evening, there would be something more spectacular than delivering flowers.

Writer Ling Cangzhou also post a statement, “Whereas it is a historic moment concerning human rights for Google to stop censoring its search services, I decided to donate the royalties of my work that’s been scanned and collected by Google’s library (Critics of Scholars and other of my books) to Google. I will reserve my rights to sue Baidu, for randomly reprinting my work.”

Google turned to Hong Kong with no intention to confront China.

A netizen named “Clear Song White Snow” said, “The short term effect for Google to leave China is, to the outsiders, to smash the image of openness that Chinese government has put in so many efforts to build. As to the insiders, it has smashed the fallacy that Chinese market can make the westerners bow. It’s blow to censorship is indirect, but deep and long term, of course. ”

He also said, for Google to migrate to Hong Kong, technically it is leaving China. Yet in public relations, it is a smart move. It shows people that Google does not want to go. It also shows that Google has no intention to challenge China. Who can say that the laws and regulations in Hong Kong are illegal?

Google.cn will be a humiliating yet honorary label to be put in Google’s museum, and on the track record of human development. Currently, a lot of netizens expressed their feelings towards Google in their posts, such asGoogle.cn will never come back. What will come back sooner or later is Google.com, the Chinese version. Google.cn will be a humiliating yet honorary label to be put in Google’s museum.

Some netizen wrote the following classic sentence: Google, I’d rather see you leave for the sake of freedom, rather than see you become lower for the "River Crab". (River Crab, an internet slang created by frustrated netizens after the implantation of "the Great Firewall" and harsh censorship in China. The word river crab sounds similar to the word harmonious in Chinese Mandarin)

Secret China - Recycled cooking oil not for cars in China?

image recycled cooking oil (screenshot)

Due to graphic images, viewer discretion is advised.

I was surfing the Internet in a cybercafe one day and read a news story about recycling cooking oil. After finishing the article, I told the manager of the cybercafe, "We have that kind of machinery in our village." The manager said to me, "If you can take some pictures and put them the web, it could easily become one of the hottest posts on the Internet." I was encouraged by what he said, so I took a hidden camera along with a friend of mine and shot some pictures to share with you all.

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!

1. One way to collect the oil to be recycled is just to shovel the oil out from the drains. It is very difficult, but it is the only way to do it if you do not have a partnership with the restaurants.

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!
 2. Most of the time you need to have a connection with the restaurant if you are in the business of recycling oil. Of course you will need to make them a good offer.

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!

3. The lady in the picture is my friend's aunt. She washes dishes in a restaurant. She also takes the recycled oil when the containers are full. We took a detailed picture and hope it does not ruin your appetite.

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!
4. She can get two to three barrels of oil when the restaurant is busy.

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!
5. Her mother-in-law will help process the oil after she takes the oil home.

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!
6. Her father in law is clenching a plastic bag that is dripping oil into the big kettle. Apparently he does not want to waste one drop of it.

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!
7. Pig’s offal is another source of oil that can be recycled. To get this you will need to have a good relationship with the pork vendors too.

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!
8. Do you know how to make friends with a pork vendor? Feed the pigs with the old oil from the restaurant then use whatever is left for your recycling!

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!
9. This is almost the final product. I know it does not look perfect, but trust me they have ways to make it look much better. That is a secret they will never tell.

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!
10. This man is buying the recycled oil.

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!
11. This recycled oil will soon be back on the table. My friend told me they sell the oil for three Yuan per pound.

内幕!俺村就是做地沟油的!

12. I hope you are lucky enough not to be served food cooked in this oil next time you eat out!
