Late 19th Century. Probably Italian. Walnut. Heavily carved pedestal desk with three drawers and two cabinets. The high relief carving includes female figures, draped and undraped, mylink1 grinning gargoyles as well as foliate designs. The sides mylink2 and back are mylink4 also carved in the same manner. Minor loss. mylink3 63 1/2"w. 34 1/2"d. 32"d.

Jimi Hendrix And Jayne Mansfield: The Untold Story

San Francisco, CA -- When Jimi Hendrix sang "Foxy Lady," he may have been singing about 1960s sex symbol Jayne Mansfield.

Believe it or not, Hendrix actually played bass and lead guitar for Mansfield back in 1965 on two songs: A ballad called "As The Clouds Drift By," and a bump-and-grind number called "Suey."

According to Hendrix historian Steven Roby, author of a new book, "Black Gold: The Lost Archives Of Jimi Hendrix" (Billboard Books), the Jayne-Jimi summit took place because they had the same manager.

The songs were never actually released but Roby says "Suey" features some great Hendrix bass-playing and lyrics like "It makes my liver quiver."

Roby doesn't know if Mansfield and Hendrix collaborated on anything else but the blonde bombshell did attend one of his concerts a few years later. However, she chose to leave with Englebert Humperdinck, not Hendrix.

In addition to singing in English and German in a number of films, in 1964, Mansfield released a novelty album called Jayne Mansfield: Shakespeare, Tchaikovsky & Me, on which she recited Shakespeare's sonnets and poems by Marlowe, Browning, Wordsworth, and others against a background of Tchaikovsky's music. The album cover depicted a bouffant-coiffed Mansfield with lips pursed and breasts barely covered by a fur stole, posing between busts of the Russian composer and the Bard of Avon.[23]

The New York Times described the album as the actress reading "30-odd poems in a husky, urban, baby voice". The paper's reviewer went on to state that "Miss Mansfield is a lady with apparent charms, but reading poetry is not one of them."[24]

Jimi Hendrix played bass and lead guitar for Mansfield in 1965 on two songs, "As The Clouds Drift By" and "Suey", released together on two sides. According to Hendrix historian Steven Roby (Black Gold: The Lost Archives Of Jimi Hendrix, Billboard Books) this collaboration happened because they shared the same manager.[25][26]

Badd Mann Dann Rapp: The guy loses a bar at about 1:30 and doesn't catch up until 2:55. On King Monkey Rapp, he does it again almost immediately, so gives up, dropping the rhythmic style mid-take for a more 'spoken word' style. Ha Ha. No retakes for *this* freak.

"King Monkey Rapp" is a version of the ancient oral-tradition rap "The Signifying Monkey." Rudy Ray Moore's kept it alive over the decades, and Schooly D did a version as "The Signifying Rapper" in the '80s.

Speech Perception and Production Laboratory - X-Ray Database - Queen's University

The X-Ray Film Database is a collaborative project by Dr. Kevin Munhall of Queen's University and Drs. Eric Vatikiotis-Bateson and Yoh'ichi Tohkura of ATR Human Information Processing Research Laboratories, Kyoto, Japan. It was conceived to preserve cineradiographic vocal tract footage, to make the images available to the speech research community, and to develop techniques for the automated digital processing of the images.

Forty years after they were first utilized in speech research, high speed x-ray films yield the best dynamic view of the entire vocal tract and provide important information about it's time-varying properties. In particular, they accurately depict the complex movements of the tongue.

Due to ethical concerns about the high radiation dosages necessary, x-ray imaging technology using normal subjects is no longer practiced and it has become imperative to preserve those films which were origially captured on the fragile medium of 35 mm film.

The Queen's University/ATR Labs X-Ray Film Database for Speech Research [1],[2] offers twenty-five high quality x-ray films, totalling 55 minutes of footage, compiled on CAV laserdisk. The films were contributed by C. Rochette (Université Laval), and K. Stevens and J. Perkell (M.I.T.). The subjects are 14 native speakers of Canadian English or French, reading phonetically contrastive sentences. The x-ray film database is available to researchers at no cost, with a limitation of one disk per institution. A DAT recording of the original audio tracks is also available. To cover the cost of materials and postage, there is a small fee for the DAT.

These have been subsampled and optimized to transfer quickly, at the expense of the original image quality. A full source video size (640x480) JPEG image is available for comparison purposes.

The subject was a 26 year old male native speaker of Canadian English who attended primary school in British Columbia.

EDIT: a lot of people have written in asking what exactly my vocoder setup is. Well that's your classic Roland SVC-350, and I'm using a Kurzweil K2600 with the basic jar-of-wasps analog brass sound as the driver. The vocal mic has no pre-processing whatsoever, I just plugged it directly into the vocoder.
