WILLIE DEVILLE: DISCOGRAPHY
Keep Willy Deville In Your Thoughts
NewsKeep Willy In Your Thoughts06.15.2009It is with a broken heart that I have to tell you that while the doctors examined Willy to prepare him for the Hep C treatment, they discovered that he has pancreatic cancer. He is doing okay and is not in pain and at home watching movies, listening to music, playing a little guitar and reading. We hug a lot and am grateful for the time we have together. Please send him your prayers and good wishes. With love from Nina
Leon Berry: The Beast in the Basement! Roller Rink Rock Dead! (I'm Sorry) [La bête dans le sous-sol!]

Leon Berry
Typical Beast in the Basement
['Face and Place' 16mm film]This is a 1960's produced 16mm film from the popular 'Face and Place'series. The organ was once used to accompany silent movies at the Lake Theater in Crystal Lake, Illinois. It's complete with all the 'bells and whistles.' The beast was removed from the house some time ago. It now resides in Arizona, currently under re-construction. Hopefully we'll hear more from "the Beast"--HAIL, SATAN!
Obituary for LEON BERRY Chicago Tribune, August 27, 1996
This is from the Chicago Tribune 8/27/96. by Kenan Heise, Tribune staff writer Leon C. Berry, 82, an organist known in the Chicago area as the dean of roller rink rock, performed for many years at such rinks as the Hub in Norridge, the Arcadia at Montrose Ave. and Broadway, and the Orbit in Palatine. In 1953 he recorded "Misirlou", a hit that ranked sixth on the Billboard Magazine popularity charts. A resident of Park Ridge, he died at home Friday, August 26th. "He was very talented", said Robert Zoltek, a fan. "He introduced classical music to roller rinks, performing such pieces on the organ as 'The Grand March' from the opera 'Aida'. He was the best, and people loved him". Mr. Berry, who first learned to play the organ as a child in church in Selma, Ala, was hired at $80 a week by the rink owners. Mr. Berry next performed at the Hub from 1950 to 1967 and subsequently at The Orbit Skate Center in Palatine, Illinois. He also got work performing at the Trianon Ballroom on the South Side. He played during intermissions between such bands as Guy Lombardo and Lawrence Welk. In the early 1950's he acquired a massive organ affectionately known as "The Lion". It had been used in the Lake Theater in Crystal Lake and so totally filled his basement that as it was being installed he had to eliminate the cold air return duct for the furnace. Survivors include a daughter, Linda DeBruler; a sister; a brother; and three grandchildren. Service for Mr. Berry were held in Park Ridge. Bryce Carus writes... Mr. Leon Berry was held in high regard and as I understand it he was still playing at the Orbit Skate Center in Palatine, Ill prior to his death in 1996. As one who saw Leon spend many hours working on the Pipe Organ at the Hub, I know he had a tremendous dedication and knowledge of that musical instrument. No matter how good it sounded he always seemed to feel that it needed just a little bit more of something. Leon was a perfectionist and we were all beneficiaries of his talent. The Hub was a Great Roller Rink, but who can think of the Hub and not remember Leon Berry and the Giant Wurlitzer. |
|
Jim Keating's recollection of Leon Berry's Pipe Organ Recordings The idea was to offer this record for sale to the skaters at the Hub Roller Rink. The intention was more for use as a souvenir than a retail item. Local DJ's secured copies of this record and gave Misirlou a lot of play time on the air, and the song gained a lot of popularity. Radio industry power brokers convinced Leon that the record needed the promotional push of a major label. Each Station's top personality lobbied for their Favorite label. One of the city's most popular and powerful broadcasters was so angry that Leon did not sell the record to his patron label that he had another organist produce a recording of the same songs as revenge. (Mr Keating did not mention any name but most who skated at the Hub knew it was Howard Miller and some organist from Kansas City)... No harm was done since the copycat did not go over very well. A healthy Cash advance and a New Pontiac convinced Leon to go with Dot Recording company. Dot released the record under their label and it hit number six on Billboards top 10!! Not bad for what started out as a souvenir for skaters at the Hub. Dot released four more songs several years later on the newly developed 45 RPM extended play record.. Four 10" 33 RPM Volumes titled Glockenspiels Traps & Plenty of Pipes were recorded at the Hub. These were repackaged into three 12" volumes. Replica also released a recording of Leon Playing his Home Wurlitzer known as the "Beast in The Basement". (This is the organ Leon rescued from the Lake Theater, Crystal Lake Illinois, and set up in the basement of his home in Norridge Illinois, thus the Beast in the Basement) ENTER.. AUDIO FIDELITY Throughout the 1960's & 1970's Audio Fidelity distributed the original recordings, and several repackaged compilations of material recorded at the Hub, as well as some recorded on the 'Beast in the Basement'. Royalties came to Leon semi annually until they ceased operation. Did Leon have complete control over what songs were put on the records? NO, Many were selected by the producer, and were not part of his own personal hit parade. Licensing and other legalities come into play. This is why, much to the dismay of some regular Hub patrons, some of the disks had songs on them that they never heard Leon play at the rink and some of the signature tunes he loved were never included on albums. Leon's only lack of success in the recording market turned out to be a source of great delight for him. during the height of the Audio Fidelity success, the Muzak corporation became aware of Leon and decided they wanted him to record for them. Sessions were set up and recording masters were made. After the Muzak coporation brass reviewed the final tapes, they sent Leon a polite rejection letter, explaining their regrets that the music was just too lively and rhythmically impelling for use in an elevator, or as background music in a tea room.. Leon loved to recount that story, and always glowed when he did.. THE RIP OFF Leon's recordings on an instrument that was made obsolete years earlier by the electric Hammond Organ did much to preserve the Theater Pipe Organ into the 21st century. Countless Organ enthusiasts and organists credit listening to Leon Berry and his recordings as their original inspiration. The worlds of theater pipe organ music, audiophiles, and skating might have been much less phenomenal had the builders of the Hub Rink decided to us a modern Electric Organ, or worse yet, a playback system for commercially available skating records instead of purchasing the Wurlitzer from the shuttered Madison Gardens Rink... Hard to believe but Leon said they paid $500 for that organ. And in closing, thanks Leon for if it had not been for the "souvenir" record, we may not still be enjoying the sounds of that GIANT Wurlitzer, played by you... |

Riverview Roller Rink Fire: Chicago Riverview Park 1971
This is a short clip of the fire that took out Riverview Roller Rink in 1971. The Roller Rink was the last remaining building associated with Riverview Park In Chicago. It was located where Devry is located except it was closer to Belmont avenue.
Some of us that remember the old place are looking for old film footage of the rink. If you have something let me know. If you remember the rink post a story or 2 in the comments.

Bukowski- Born into This [Trailer: Pat Moriarity Cartoons]
My cartoons are in this trailer. (Don't blink or you'll miss it!) Go rent this movie. Not long before his death, I created some comics interpretations of a few of Charles Bukowski's poems, with his knowledge and cooperation. Via Dennis P. Eichhorn, Buk provided me with poems to interpret. He endorsed and cashed every check. Most importantly, to me, he liked the comics, let me do another, etc. A few panels of our comics are shown in the movie. They are flashed by quickly in the trailer, but the drinking cartoons are from the comic book title called BIG MOUTH. Some of these books are still available here
http://www.patmoriarity.com
Another Bukowski comic I illustrated appeared in ZERO ZERO issue one, from Fantagraphics. Another cartoon trivia note about the movie- Eichhorn has some original cartoon art, drawn by Bukowski himself, that appears at the end of the movie.

Wurlitzer Organ: Tremulant Vibrato Nanny Goat Sound Hated By Purist Farts [Doc Pt. 2]
Since I posted that last organ video, I received some requests to put up more of this program. The first part showcased the organists. This video continues with additional discussion devoted to the history and mechanics of the organ as well as a few tours of organs installed in homes. It would be interesting to know if these installations still exist.

Wurlitzer Organ: When You're Smiling [Doc Pt. 1]
I found this among my dusty collection of films and videos. It was recorded over 20 years ago so please excuse the quality. There are some nice performances on organs around England and many great scenes from the Blackpool Tower Ballroom featuring a few famous organists from the past. I also posted Part Two which continues the story:
Big Tiny Little: Maple Leaf Rag [Lawrence Welk]
This is a clip from my 16mm kinescope collection of Lawrence Welk films. Big Tiny Little performing Maple Leaf Rag. Tiny Little was the ragtime piano player on the Welk show from 1955-1959 before Jo Ann Castle made her debut in 1959. This program aired on October 17, 1957.
Ethel Smith: 'The Breeze and I'
This was on a 16mm film. The sound and picture were recorded separately since the projector was quite noisy. It was difficult to keep in sync plus the film had a bit of warpage so the sound is not that great either. It's part of a Castle Films short which starred Desi Arnaz who doesn't appear here, but that's another show. I just wanted to feature Ethel Smith since it's rare that you ever see one of the early great organists on film.
The Lawrence Welk Show: I Get A Kick Out Of You [Jerry Burke (1955)]
Most people watching the Welk show mainly associate his organist with Bob Ralston. Long before Bob joined the Welk show, Jerry Burke tickled the keys of a tone wheel Hammond. Jerry made several reunion appearances on the show during Ralston's tenure and passed away unexpectedly decades ago.
Thomas Dorsey: INVENTED GOSPEL MUSIC AMEN!
AMEN AND AMEN!! I went to a church singing tonight at the Children's Home in Mount Dora, Florida. The song leader read the story of "Precious Lord" a song I'd sung for years. I can never sing it the same way again. Thank God men with such talents can share their gifts for generations to come. Redemption, friends, what can be sweeter than that? It's amazing how music in the church has evolved. But what's sad is that we as Christians are still the same when it comes to that. Just as he was not accepted in a lot of churches then, their are Christian artist that aren't accepted today. Mainly Christian rappers. From Dorsey to Cleveland to the Winans and Commissioned. None were accepted at first. Then of course Kirk Franklin. We as Christians are only holding ourselves back from receiving all God has for us.
Say Amen! [GOSPEL DOC]
It was interesting how Mother Smith mentioned that man was trying to touch her but she kept singing/ministering to him until he was in tears - wow - Zella Jackson Price was just a little part of the movie, but she was the brightest star among all those greats. I've listened to her recording of this song since I saw the movie when it first came out and I'm brought to tears every time. I've also been very disappointed that there doesn't seem to be more recordings of her. The video sound isn't as good as the recording you can get from other sources. Oh yes...Wow, I am absolutely and belatedly in awe of Zella. She is a powerhouse! I am reminded of all those strong, gifted vocalists I grew up with in Southern Baptist churches. Lord knows, she brings it and anyone can tell that she means it when she proclaims "I'm Happy!" Hard to believe this is over 20 y/o footage, but what a great moment in time to be captured for posterity. I thank Angels in America's Flotilla Debarge for turning me on to Zella's magic. You are indeed his child. Sang, Zella, sang.
This was an excellent documentary.
Before i saw this years back i have to admit i was not too familiar with anyone other than Thomas Dorsey and Roberta Martin.
Glad i found out about these artist.

The expensive film, made for the 100th anniversary of the German railroad, was not shown in 1935! Reichspropagandaminister Goebbels didn't like it at all, because much of the time is devoted to English railway pioneers like William Hedley and George Stephenson. Finally the release came 20 years later

ISAAC TIGRETT: "MY GURU MADE ME DO IT!" [CAR 50 + HOUSE OF BLUES OPENING: MYRTLE BEACH]

ISAAC BURTON TIGRETT, Founder-Creator of Hard Rock Café & The House of Blues was born in 1948 into an influential Southern family that founded Jackson, Tennessee in the 1820s. Family entrepreneurial activities included lumber, farming, railroads, bus lines, real estate, banking, and manufacturing. Tigrett moved to England in 1967. On a 600 pound savings, Tigrett founded the Century Carriage Company in 1968 which exported used Roll Royce and Bentley automobiles to the U.S.A. Tigrett cleared $250,000 in 1969, which financed the Hard Rock Café in 1971. Tigrett had 1 child, Augusta, with Maureen Starkey Tigrett (formerly married to Ringo Star) and raised her children, Zak, Jason, and Lee from 1976 until her death 19 years later. Throughout his professional career Isaac Tigrett has followed the evolution of music, art and other social trends and their impact on culture. Mr. Tigrett's keen insights into trends and social/cultural movements, together with expansive creative capabilities, fuel his visionary approach to creating experiences and environments that entertain and educate customers and participants.
In his early career, Mr. Tigrett's focus was on the evolution of music and pop culture and their impact on society. In 1971, at the age of 22, he created the world famous Hard Rock Café in London with his 50/50 partner Peter Morton (23).
Tigrett was the concept creator and named the venture HARD ROCK CAFÉ. Morton was from a distinguished restaurant family in Chicago USA. He supplied the food and catering know-how. Eric Crisman, an early manager, describes the two young entrepreneurs.
Tigrett and Morton couldn't have been more dissimilar! Like oil and water! Tigrett was a revolutionary hippie activist with long hair, dressed in King's Road blue velvets and snake skin boots. Morton sported Saville Row tailored blue blazers and Gucci shoes
Tigrett and Morton held together their shaky partnership until 1981. Tigrett then bought out Morton's interest in the only existing Hard Rock Café on London's Hyde Park Corner and all World Rights to the name Hard Rock Café.
Tigrett and Morton sold their perspective Hard Rock Café companies to England's Rank Origination PLC.
Following the sale of his interest in the Hard Rock Café, Mr. Tigrett created the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medicine for his guru, Sai Baba: a free 500-bed advanced surgical hospital that serves the rural poor in Anantapur, India.
Following the opening of the Medical Institute, Mr. Tigrett turned his attention to his next venture. Using the skills that he has demonstrated in building the Hard Rock Café Brand, he again wowed the music community with his new creation, the famous HOUSE OF BLUES, again with long time friend and Blues Brother Dan Akyroyd.
Mr.Tigrett's vision for The House of Blues grew from his belief that popular tastes were evolving from rock 'n' roll to alternative original music art forms such as Blues, Jazz, Latin, Country & Western, Urban, Rhythm & Blues and Rap.
Tigrett's new HOUSE OF BLUES cultural creation consisted of a dynamic Live Music Venue for 2000 people plus, an exclusive Private Club and gourmet restaurant called The Foundation Room, and a 350 seat New Orleans Restaurant filled with previously unseen original American Folk and Outsider Art.
Tigrett founded the much-heralded HOUSE OF BLUES venues in Harvard Square, Cambridge MA; New Orleans, LA, Los Angeles CA, Myrtle Beach, SC; Orlando, FL; and Chicago IL.
Tigrett left HOUSE OF BLUES in 1998 after a Board Room power grab by directors Chase Bank, The Disney Co., The Aeneas Banking Group and Goldbury Ventures.
Tigrett now lives in Prasanthi Nilayam in South India at the Ashram of his Master Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Tigrett is currently launching his next venture, a Spiritual Retreat in the rain forest of S. India - at the behest of his Master, THE MYSTIC INN OF THE 7TH RAY.
In 2007 British Rank Origination PLC sold Hard Rock Café's 124 Cafes, 4 Hotels and pair of Casinos to the Seminole Indian Tribe of Florida for US $965 million. In 2007, The Hard Rock rights for Casinos and Hotels in half of the USA was sold to Morgan's Hotel Group for US $770 million. In 2007, Live Nation (Clear Channel Com., Inc.) bought the House of Blues Entertainment group for US $350 million, and is launching HOBs Across Europe and Asia.
