In the left-hand panel of a search results page, a set of links in the "Something different" section shows some queries that may be in the same category as your original search. These alternative queries can help you discover webpages that are indirectly related to your search.

For example, if you search for [ noodles ], you might see tofu, vermicelli, and dumplings listed in the "Something different" section. This feature allows you to explore other concepts that you might find interesting.

How does Google determine what links to show?

"Something different" relies on web documents and users' search queries to identify concepts that that may be related or are in the same category. Among other factors, our algorithms look at the terms that users search for during the same session, since they are more likely to be related. We also consider whether the terms appear in similar contexts on websites, such as in the same table. For example, if you search for [ soccer ], we might notice that web documents and users' search queries often connect soccer to other sports like tennis and basketball. These searches are algorithmically determined based on a number of purely objective factors without human intervention.

Why do I sometimes see queries that are seemingly unrelated or offensive?

The search queries you see in the "Something different" section are a reflection of web documents and user search activity. Just like the web, the search queries presented may include silly, strange, and surprising terms and phrases. In some cases, there may be links to concepts that seem surprising to you, but after doing some searching on the web, you may discover that they actually are connected to your original search in some way.

I have tested it with search terms that have gotten "Something different" results before. such as "cat" and "noodles". I tried clearing my cache. Please don't say that it has been rolled into "Related searches". Those are a completely different thing and the way the suggestions are presented there is useless. I liked that they were limited to just 5 similar items. I really need to get this feature back. Sets and Squared don't solve the problem, either.

Did you read what I said?? Related searches is not an acceptable substitute. Example: A search for "burgundy" used to get the following for "Something different" (I know because I wrote them down back when it was working): maroon, beige, mauve, taupe, chocolate brown. For "Related searches", the similar kinds of results are mixed in with regular related searches (i.e. burgundy color, burgundy hair, etc.) and are of poorer quality. It gets: maroon, purple, beige, magenta, champagne, but it also gets 15 other useless related search results, including a couple of misspellings of "burgundy". Something different =/= Related searches. Does anyone know why SOMETHING DIFFERENT is gone???

Two females and a male were born Dec. 23 in Buenes Aires BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Three white tiger cubs just weeks old debuted Thursday at the Buenos Aires Zoo in Argentina, romping in pen before delighted children and their parents.

The cubs — two females and a male — were born Dec. 23 to Conde and Bety at the zoo in the Argentine capital, and had since been kept out of view.

The cubs weighed about 2.2 pounds at birth and were gaining weight fast, with each now weighing about 13 pounds.

The three siblings have been cavorting in the grass of their outdoor pen to the delight of schoolchildren out for South America's summer vacations.

"They're just so playful," Buenos Aires Zoo spokeswoman Florencia Presa said Friday.

The zoo has been swamped with thousands of suggested names for the cubs, and a big box for entries in a naming contest has been filling fast. "Already there are 5,000 slips filled out and the box keeps filling," said zoo spokesperson Florencia Presa.

The winners will be picked in a few months with the three lucky children whose names are selected becoming "godparents" to the cubs and getting a yearlong pass to visit.

White tigers are not a separate subspecies but the result of both parents having a recessive gene for white coloration. They are rare in the wild because standing out in the jungle does not help catch prey.
