The Queen holds receptions throughout the year at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
Guests are drawn from all walks of life.
Some receptions have a theme, such as ‘Women in Business’ or ‘Maritime Britain’. At other times, the guests may be sporting team members who have been particularly successful, or Commonwealth teams who are competing in the UK.
Last year, a reception was held at Buckingham Palace to mark the 50th anniversary of the children's television show 'Blue Peter'.

Prior to The Queen’s State Visit to the USA in 2007, Her Majesty invited American citizens working in the UK to a Reception in Buckingham Palace. This gave The Queen the opportunity to meet many Americans before her visit, and for the American community in Britain to meet each other in the Palace.
Guests are invited by The Master of the Household on behalf of Her Majesty, and they are usually asked to arrive for 6.00 pm. Drinks are served by Household staff and canapés, made in the Royal kitchens, are served.
The Queen, accompanied by other members of the Royal Family, circulates amongst the guests, and usually departs at 8.00 pm.

A joint initiative between Buckingham Palace and Clarence House, the British Monarchy Twitter account will provide followers with regular updates informing them of the work of the Royal Family.
Each day, the following day’s Royal engagements and ceremonies will appear and links to new Royal Pictures, announcements, news and updates will be made available.
Regular information on events and ceremonies will be published, as will links to the latest films uploaded to The Royal Channel on YouTube: www.twitter.com/BritishMonarchy
The Prince’s Charities will also launch their Twitter feed today, www.twitter.com/powcharities. The Prince’s Charities is a group of not-for-profit organisations of which The Prince of Wales is President: 18 of the 20 charities were founded personally by The Prince.
The Prince’s Charities Twitter feed will work alongside The Prince’s Charities Community website, http://princescharities.org, to provide an up-to-date source of information featuring the latest news, events and volunteering opportunities from the charities.

Michael Jackson is dying - and has only six months to live, pals fear. Sadly, the desperately ill star is bedridden much of the time, and his electrifying stage performances are a thing of the past. Incredible reports surfaced in late December that Jackson is battling a rare, deadly genetic disorder and requires a lung transplant. Although the singer denied the reports, The ENQUIRER was told by sources that his health is deteriorating rapidly because of a crippling addiction to painkillers and alcohol. A source close to the star divulged: "It's tragic. His condition is just so far gone, I'd be surprised if he lasts six months. "Painkillers have caught up with him. The only way he was able to cope with the stress of sex scandals and his roller-coaster life was to mask the pain with substance abuse. "But the end result is an addiction that will kill him." The REAL father of Michael Jackson's first two children is NOT his dermatologist!
Despite reports Jacko's longtime friend, Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Arnold Klein, fathered Prince Michael I and Paris the two kids are actually the offspring of an anonymous sperm donor chosen by Jacko, The ENQUIRER has learned exclusively.
After painstakingly reviewing dozens of profiles of potential sperm donors, Michael selected "a good-looking white dentist from Pennsylvania who had an extremely high I.Q.," divulged a close family friend.
As for the report that Dr. Klein is the kids' father, "Michael and Arnie always laughed whenever they heard that old rumor. They joked about it," said the Jackson insider.
In choosing a sperm donor, Michael closely examined family histories, educational backgrounds and medical and psychiatric records of potential donors to make sure there was no potential for genetic physical or mental problems, revealed the friend.
Michael chose good friend Debbie Rowe, Dr. Klein's medical assistant, to be the biological mother of his two older children. She was the one who suggested using a sperm bank, says the family friend.
After Debbie was artificially inseminated, Michael and Debbie married on Nov. 15, 1996. Prince Michael Jr. was born on Feb. 13, 1997.
Debbie went through another in vitro procedure later that year with the same sperm donor, and Paris was born on April 3, 1998.
The youngest Prince Michael II aka Blanket is another story entirely - he was acquired through a third -party adoption agency.
