1988

Down In The Groove, composed of songs written by Robert Hunter, Dylan/Hunter, and a few covers, is released. The Traveling Wilburys: Volume One, the result of a collaboration of Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison is released. Orbison's death in December saddens the Wilburys. Dylan performs at a benefit for the Bridge School to raise funds for handicapped children. The case against Hurricane Carter is finally overturned and Carter is freed.

1989

Dylan and the Dead, a collaboration between Dylan and the Grateful Dead, is released, but the performances of both Dylan and the Dead are not their finest. Oh Mercy, one of his finest electric albums, is also released. Producer Daniel Lanois is partly responsible for the new sound of this album. In May, at the start of his European tour, Dylan surprises everyone by performing wearing a cap with a hood pulled up over it. For the next two years he will continue to appear in this outfit, both at performances, in public, and at studio sessions with old friends like George Harrison and Tom Petty.

1990

Under the Red Sky is released, to a lukewarm reception. One particular track, 'Wiggle Wiggle," is often cited as Dylan's worst-ever song. Also released is The Traveling Wilburys: Volume 3, the second collaboration minus Roy Orbison. Dylan continues his relentless touring.

1991

To the delight of fans and critics, The Bootleg Series, Vols 1-3, Rare and Unreleased 1961-1989 is released. Dylan receives a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 20th Grammy Awards ceremony.

1992

Good As I Been To You, a acoustic collection of blues and traditional covers, is released. At Madison Square Garden, Dylan and fellow musicians gather to celebrate his 30-year anniversary in the recording business.
1993

The 30th Anniversary Celebration is released, as is World Gone Wrong, another colection off acoustic blues and traditional covers. An interactive CD-ROM called Highway 61 Revisited is released. In January, Dylan performs at Bill Clinton's first inauguration.

1994

Dylan performs at the Woodstock II Festival. MTV Unplugged is filmed for broadcast on MTV and release as a videotape and album.
1995

Dylan tapes "Restless Farewell" for a televised Frank Sinatra birthday tribute.

1996

Dylan is nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. In a move that surprised many, he licenses "The Times They Are A-Changin'" for use in a Bank of Montreal television commericial.

1997

Time Out of Mind is released. The album is a favorite with critics and fans and earns Dylan several Grammys. Time Out Of Mind attracts a younger audience to Dylan's music. During the winter, Dylan is hospitalized with a potentially serious heart infection. He recovers to perform before the Pope in November, and to accept a Kennedy Center award in December. He is nominated for the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature, but does not receive it.

1998

Infidels' closer, "Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight" stands out on the album as a pure love song. On past albums like John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline, Dylan closed with love songs sung to the narrator's partner, and that tradition is continued with "Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight", with a chorus that asks "Don't fall apart on me tonight, I just don't think that I could handle it./Don't fall apart on me tonight, Yesterday's just a memory, Tomorrow is never what it's supposed to be/And I need you, yeah, you tonight."

  Mark Knopfler (guitar), Mick Taylor (guitar), and Alan Clark (keyboards); From Jamaica, Robbie Shakespeare (bass) and Sly Dunbar (drums).

Many of the songs recorded during the month they spent in the studio were either done spontaneously (all the cover versions), or worked on from the basic riffs (Foot Of Pride).

Fortunately these recording sessions are well documented and the following listings must be as close as one can get to completeness without listening to each and every tape. Information about the overdub sessions in mid-May (right after the ordinary recording sessions) has been fully available and documents that "Full Force" did not overdub "Death Is Not The End" in June/July, but immediately following the recording sessions. Information about later (June/July 1983) overdub sessions (if they took place) has not been available.

So now we set sail for a tour de force, which will answer last issue's prize winning question: "Which song was recorded in most takes and versions during these sessions?" It will not shed light on rumours like:" 'Sultans of Swing' was rehearsed during the Infidels sessions", as it can of course only document the songs which were recorded, and "Sultans of Swing" doesn't seem to be among them.

As earlier, notations about the takes (FS = False Start, LFS = Long False Start, CT = Complete Take) are given as they appear on the recording sheets and to avoid mistakes I have not tried to Interpret them or put them into any new system.

Interestingly, "Blind Willie McTell" was the first and the last song to be recorded during these sessions, indicating that a satisfactory format for the song was not found easily.

The next day's recordings produced the first of two first take masters from the Infidels sessions: "License To Kill".

All the wonted care Dylan has put into this album shows--musically, "License to Kill" is the only dud. His distaste for the daughters of Satan has gained complexity of tone--neither dismissive nor vituperative, he addresses women with a solicitousness that's strangely chilling, as if he knows what a self-serving hypocrite he's being, but only subliminally. At times I even feel sorry for him, just as he intends. Nevertheless, this man has turned into a hateful crackpot. Worse than his equation of Jews with Zionists with the Likud or his utterly muddled disquisition on international labor is the ital Hasidism that inspires no less than three superstitious attacks on space travel. God knows (and I use that phrase advisedly) how far off the deep end he'll go if John Glenn becomes president. B-

Mit Moog-Synthesizer werden die Synthesizer der von dem Pionier Robert Moog gegründeten Firma Moog bezeichnet.

In der Anfangszeit wurde ein modulares Synthesizersystem entwickelt. Den Durchbruch schaffte die Firma jedoch mit dem Minimoog, dem ersten tragbaren Kompaktsynthesizer mit integrierter Tastatur.

In den 1970er Jahren wurde dieses Gerät beispielsweise von Keith Emerson und Chick Corea exzessiv genutzt. Des Weiteren ist er von LPs von Stevie Wonder, Uriah Heep, Kraftwerk, Manfred Mann und Tangerine Dream bekannt. Pink Floyd setzten ihn 1975 in dem Stück Shine on You Crazy Diamond ein, wo sein Sound den Klang einer Trompete imitiert. Steve Winwood hingegen erkannte besonders sein Potential für kraftvolle Bass-Sounds. Ab 1978 verwendete die kanadische Bombast-Rockband Saga die Moog-Synthesizer für ihre Keyboard-geprägte Musik. In den 90er-Jahren war der Moog-Synthesizer ein beliebtes Instrument im u.a. von Warren G oder Dr. Dre vertretenen G-Funk. Er lieferte dort neben den typischen Bass-Sounds auch das hochfrequente, mit Portamento versehene Pfeifen.

Der Minimoog wird noch heute als Referenzgerät zur klanglichen Beurteilung aktueller Geräte herangezogen. Dem Minimoog fehlten jedoch MIDI-Fähigkeiten, Anschlagsdynamik und die Möglichkeit, Klänge zu speichern. Darüber hinaus war der Minimoog nur monophon spielbar.

Daher entwickelte die Firma Moog in den Folgejahren weitere Modelle, wie beispielsweise den Memorymoog oder 1976 den "Polymoog"[1].

Um den legendären Moog-Sound auch für jeden erschwinglich zu machen, entwickelte Moog später den "Prodigy"[2]. Dieser sehr kompakte Synthesizer sollte nach dem Minimoog das erfolgreichste Modell werden.

Durch besondere optische Präsenz fiel das Modell "Liberation" auf, die erste serienmäßig gefertigte Keytar. Sie wurde u.a. von Nena, der Spider Murphy Gang, Asia und Jan Hammer populär gemacht. Sie basierte technisch auf dem Moog Opus 3 und bot eine auf dem Frequenzteilersystem basierende Polyphonie.

Mittlerweile legendär ist das rare Basspedal "Moog Taurus"[3]. Dieser Pedal-Synthesizer wird mit den Füßen gespielt und erzeugt einen sehr voluminösen Sound. Der von Robert Moog für den Komponisten Max Brand um das Jahr 1960 gebaute Prototyp des Moog-Synthesizers steht im Max Brand Archiv in Langenzersdorf (Österreich).

Self-defecating would mean, literally, shitting on oneself. Self-depracating would be to deface onself, or to put oneself down before others.
