KFC tests out new bunless burger to rave reviews in America's heartlandThe chemistry whizkids at what used to be called Kentucky Fried Chicken before 'fried' became a word with negative connotations have come up with what they believe may be the year's big fast food burger seller - and it doesn't include bread. Behold, the Double Down.
The creation features a dollop of the Colonel's secret sauce wrapped in a slice of both Pepperjack Cheese and Swiss Cheese, between two slices of bacon and two filets of KFC original recipe chicken that serve as the 'bread' of the burger.
That's right - instead of bread, you get breaded chicken. Multiplied by two.
The Double Down is generally considered to be a big success thus far in the areas it has been tested, with management at a KFC outlet in Omaha Nebraska telling Australian reporters that the 'sandwich' had exceeded expectations.
The Double Down sells for $6.99 and a TV commercial promoting it in the American midwest says it has "so much 100 percent premium chicken, we didn't have room for a bun." The commercial comes as part of the "Rethink KFC" campaign that has, to date, been focused on rebranding the company with healthy products.
KFC doesn't offer official nutritional information on their website to tell potential Double Downers what they might be doing to their internal system, so we here at The Vancouver Sun have taken out our chemistry set and rebuilt the Double Down in our underground lab with a view to figuring out how it works.
The results of our calculations (and these are only guess-timates) show this one menu item can be estimated to supply more than the daily recommended allowance in fat (124%), saturated fat (117%), cholesterol (105%), sodium (125%) and protein (194%), as well as 61% of your daily recommended calorie intake.
Our figures are only an estimate based on nutritional information listed for individual ingredients on the KFC website, as well as ingredients that closely resemble others not listed, and data provided by nutritional watchdog groups based on generic brands, so should be taken (if you'll excuse the pun) with a grain of salt.
But if our figures hold true, and we haven't been able to get KFC to confirm they don't, the Double Down is more caloriffic than the Wendy's Triple with Everything and Cheese (1700 mg sodium, 960 calories, 26 gms of fat), the Burger King Stacker Quad (1770 sodium, 1020 calories, 69 gms of fat), and compares closely to the fat, salt and calorie totals of three McDonalds Big Macs put together (3060 sodium, 1620 calories, 87 gms fat).
UPDATE: KFC public relations rep Rick Maynard has come forward with some nutritional information estimates for the Double Down which he says run contrary to what we've reported. Maynard says the firm wouldn't normally do a full nutritional run on a product unless they decided to roll out a product nationally, but he has volunteered estimated figures for the information of the eating public.
Maynard clarifies, "It looks like when you guys ran your numbers, you included the numbers for two Original Recipe breasts (chicken on the bone). This product uses Original Recipe filets."
That information changes things markedly in some areas, according to KFC, putting the calorie count at 590, the total fat content at 31g, the saturated fat at 10g, and the cholesterol at 190mg. That's certainly an improvement, putting the meal in line with the mid-to-high range of most fast food outlet menu items.
KFC provided no information on sodium content, carbohydrates or protein, and though our adjusted numbers still come out differently to what the company claims to be true, we'll cede to their food boffins as knowing more than our junk food addicts with calculators and muffin-top waistlines.
Eat up, Nebraskans. And pass the napkins.

KFC's Double Down Sandwich: Is Chicken Instead Of Bread Going Too Far? (VIDEO)
KFC's Double Down Sandwich: Is Chicken Instead Of Bread Going Too Far? (VIDEO)In the midst of a staggering obesity epidemic in the US, KFC has doubled down on a high-calorie menu choice. KFC is now offering a "sandwich" which consists of bacon, two kinds of cheeses and sauce between two pieces of fried chicken. That's right, fried chicken as a bun instead of bread.
According to Fox News, the "sandwich" is being test-marketed in only two areas so far, Rhode Island and Nebraska.
WATCH:
The item is not yet on the KFC website. We look forward to looking at the nutrition information once it appears.
UPDATE:The Vancouver Sun has done an independent calorie analysis for the "Double Down" and has concluded the "sandwich" likely has 1228 calories.
But if our figures hold true, and KFC won't confirm they don't, the Double Down is more caloriffic than the Wendy's Triple with Everything and Cheese (1700 mg sodium, 960 calories, 26 gms of fat), the Burger King Stacker Quad (1770 sodium, 1020 calories, 69 gms of fat), and compares closely to the fat, salt and calorie totals of three McDonalds Big Macs put together (3060 sodium, 1620 calories, 87 gms fat).
Elvis Costello: Happy 55th birthday! | EW.com
Elvis Costello: Happy 55th birthday! | EW.comElvis Costello: Happy 55th birthday!
by Clark CollisElvis Costello is 55 today. I’d sing “Happy Birthday” in his honor except (a) it’s been made abundantly clear that my vocalizing around the office is not appreciated and (b) I have no idea in what genre I should perform said tribute.
During his lengthy career the man born Declan Patrick MacManus has explored a raft of musical avenues, from his soul-infused 1979 album Get Happy!! to 1993’s The Juliet Letters, a collaboration with British classical outfit The Brodsky Quartet. One year, at Britain’s Glastonbury Festival, I even saw him perform a version of the George Michael hit “I Want Your Sex” accompanied only by something he described as “the Napoleon Dynamite beatbox.” (Okay, truthfully, my memories of that entire event are somewhat hazy. But I’m fairly sure that’s what happened.) However, my favorite live Costello memory is seeing him on the tour to support his still fabulous 1986 country-rock opus King of America, and I leave you with a clip of him performing title-ish track from that album (the song is actually called “Brilliant Mistake”), together with a smidge of Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue.”

Lisa Marie Presley says it takes some gall for a nanny who she treated like a celebrity to turn around and sue her.
Lisa Marie tells TMZ Christine White has "self-entitlement" issues. White just sued Elvis' daughter for not getting meal breaks and allegedly being forced to work 7 days a week during her stint as a postpartum caregiver after the birth of Lisa Marie's child last October.
Lisa Marie now says she paid Christine $650 a day and she had chefs and other staff at her disposal. Lisa Marie goes on ... Christine had her own guest house on the property where she would sleep and take "many breaks."
Here's the best part: "Ms. White's self-entitlement became more and more severe as she became exposed to the various 'perks' she was given on the job.
A taste of the celebrity life can be a dangerous thing.
By the way, Lisa Marie says Christine practically tripped over herself after she was fired to hire a lawyer.

Say Chaffin Offered Spots Where Theresa Might Be, But No Body Found

GBI Special Agent James Harris told a jury at LaFayette on Tuesday that Sam Parker said his missing wife, Theresa, might be in Cancun with a Mexican Elvis.
Agent Harris said FBI agents were dispatched to the seaside Mexican resort, but could not locate the missing Walker County 911 dispatcher or a Mexican Elvis.
It was testified that Ms. Parker made a trip to Cancun with her three nieces for Spring Break 2006 and was pictured with a Mexican Elvis at that time.
Agent Harris, the lead investigator in the puzzling Parker case, completed his testimony at noon Tuesday. Parker is standing trial for murder, though Theresa's body has never been found. While he was on the stand, the jury heard an interview the former LaFayette Police sergeant gave to an Atlanta TV station, in which he said the probe was "absolutely destroying my life."
He said detectives were "trying to cut me off from all my friends" and trying to get him to "break."
He insisted he had not harmed Theresa, and he said he believed she was still alive. He said, "I never harmed her and I never would."
Parker said, "I think I know where she is, but let it go at that. If she's happy, that's fine."
He added, "Dead? I'm not even going to think that. Certain things that were put up put her certain places."
Parker said they had their impending divorce worked out - "it was a done deal." He said her disappearance had put him "in limbo."
He told the station at the interview at his home in LaFayette, "I wish she'd taken care of all this before she left." He said he had signed the divorce papers, but she had not.
Asking about proving his innocence, he said, "It's been proved as far as I'm concerned, but I'm still number one."
He said officers had gone into his home and had torn his gunsafe out of the wall and carried it off. He said they "took my unused dental floss."
He said, "My life is over. It's over. I am in life limbo. I am in job limbo."
Parker said officers put a GPS tracking device on his pickup truck, and he spotted it after it had been there a month and a half.
Agent Harris said the guns were taken to Summerville so they could be test fired for matching purposes in case Theresa's body is found.
He said there were numerous guns at the Parker home, including one under Theresa's pillow, another in a box in the living room, some in the gunsafe and some near the gunsafe.
The agent said, "Every time I went there was a new gun." He said one was spotted between the cushions of the couch.
He said despite the exhaustive investigation that Sam Parker is the only with a motive to kill Theresa.
The agent denied he had ever told anyone not to talk to Parker.
Under cross-examination, he said former LaFayette Police officer Ben Chaffin was offered a "get-out-of-jail-free card" if he could tell where Theresa's body was.
He said Chaffin offered several possibilities, but none of them panned out.
He said one pair of Ms. Parker's eyeglasses has never been found. He said all activity stopped on her cell phone and credit cards after she was last seen on March 21, 2007.
He said officers checked bus lines, air flights, hospitals and mental hospitals to no avail.

Audience: Pediatric and Obstetric Healthcare professionals, hospital risk managers
[UPDATED 08/25/2009] FDA notified healthcare professionals of a Class 1 recall of these models of the Stabilet infant warmer because these out-of-date devices may cause serious injury to infants and caregivers due to the possibility that the warmer might be the ignition source for a fire. On July 20, 2009, Draeger sent a recall letter to all known customers, requested customers remove the affected devices from service, remove the heating element and the power cord to make the device unusable once removed from service and emphasized these devices are not to be used, donated or sold for any other purpose. Class I recalls are the most serious type of recall and involve situations in which there is a reasonable probability that use of these products will cause serious injury or death.
[Posted 07/22/2009] Draeger Medical and FDA notified healthcare professionals that it recommends the removal of Stabilet Infant Warmer models 200, 300, 1250, 1500, 200/3000, 2000, 2200/3200, 3000, and 3200 from service as soon as possible due to concern that continued use of these devices may result in serious injury to the patient and/or caregiver. A January 2008 fire in a Minnesota neonatal unit injured an infant and an independent investigation concluded that the Hill-Rom Stabilet 1250 was likely the ignition source of the fire. Draeger agrees with the recommendation to remove the referenced Stabilet models from service immediately. Immediate actions required include:
- Locate and identify the devices listed in this notice.
- Remove the referenced devices from service as soon as possible.
- Once removed from service, the warmers should be rendered unusable by removing the heating element and the power cord. These warmers should not be used or sold for any other purpose.
- If an infant is currently receiving therapy from one of the referenced devices, consider the risk of moving the patient before changing to an alternative mode of therapy.
A recall notification is being sent out to all known current users and is available in the Draeger website at www.draeger.com/Stabilet. Health care professionals and consumers should report serious adverse events (side effects) or product quality problems with the use of this product to Draeger Medical Systems Inc. or to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event reporting Program (www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm)

Michael Jackson costumes center of lawsuit from English wig maker

Michael Jackson's resemblance is clear in 'Plastic Man Wig with Glasses,' being sold by Rubie's Costume Co.
A famed English wigmaker is flipping its top over a Queens company's plans to hawk Michael Jackson costumes.
Century-old Smiffy's sued Rubie's Costume Co. in Manhattan Federal Court on Monday, claiming it has the worldwide rights to sell King of Pop getups for years to come.
Smiffy's, which was founded as a maker of powdered wigs for stuffy English judges, has successfully branched out into selling Jackson costumes.
Among its best sellers are the single-gloved "Billie Jean" costume and the "Bad" costume with a flowing black wig.
The venerable wigmaker says it owns the rights to the costumes and says Rubie's already has cost it more than $250,000 in orders by making phony marketing pitches to potential customers.
Not so, says Rubie's.
The Richmond Hill company says the suit is totally "Off the Wall" and claims it obtained the Jackson costume rights from a California company.
"Rubie's Officially is the Worldwide Licensee for Michael Jackson Costumes and Accessories," Rubie's Vice President Howard Beige wrote in an e-mail sent out last week, according to the lawsuit.
Rubie's already has the rights to market Elvis Presley costumes, and predicts Jackson will rival the swivel-hipped rocker in costume sales.
"He's going to be an iconic figure, like Elvis and Marilyn Monroe who will be a perennial seller," Beige said.
