China's football team never made it to the World Cup, but that does not mean the country's presence has not been felt: The Asian giant has cornered the market on perhaps the most unforgettable off-field aspect of the World Cup -- the vuvuzela.

Ningbo, China (CNN) -- China's football team did not make it to the World Cup this year, but that does not mean the country's presence has not been felt: The Asian giant has cornered the market on perhaps the most unforgettable off-field aspect of the World Cup -- the vuvuzela.

Ninety percent of the vuvuzelas, the plastic South African trumpet whose loud rasp has become synonymous with the 2010 World Cup, are made in China, according to the China Daily.

The Chinese did it the same way they have done for so many other products: low costs and quick production at factories like the one run by Wu Yuye just outside the southern Chinese city of Ningbo. With a few dozen staff, they make more than 20,000 bugles a day. So far this year, they have churned out more than 1 million of them.

"I'm very proud that our vuvuzelas made it to World Cup in South Africa, especially since we have such a small family factory," Wu said.

And she is not alone. A recent poll in the state media found that more than 60 percent of respondents were proud the "made in China" vuvuzelas were so popular in South Africa.

Making the trumpets is simple: plastic is melted into a mold and then it sets. A small group of women take off the sharp edges to finish off the process.

Wu said it costs about US$0.40 to make each vuvuzela. But outside the stadiums in Johannesburg, the vuvuzelas can sell for up to $8. Despite the markup, not much is coming back to the Chinese manufacturers. Wu said she makes just a few cents on each one.

"Although we don't make a lot of money, I'm sure we'll have a good future making these," she said.

That's because Wu and all the vuvuzela makers in China are looking beyond the World Cup. Domestic orders are starting to come in, including for the Asian Games in Guangzhou later this year. Wu is hoping that the vuvuzela will be the next must have accessory for all sports fans -- maybe the next giant foam finger -- at events like baseball, basketball or rugby.

While a lot of debate has centered on the loud and droning noise of the vuvuzela, Wu has the tact of a business person who knows where the sales are.

"The vuvuzela is a tradition in South Africa, it makes a happy sound," she said.

Weegee Perches on my old Window Sill 4 Centre Market Place, New York at Night

ON the north side of Broome Street, between the Bowery and Elizabeth Street, you can stand where a dead guy once lay. Of course in New York City you can stand on lots of spots where dead people once lay. There are, after all, "eight million stories in the naked city," as the narrator of "The Naked City," the 1948 film noir classic, intoned. But as Andrew Izzo sprawled on this sidewalk on the Lower East Side in 1942, Arthur Fellig, one of the city's most famous photographers, took his picture.

Late on the night of Feb. 2, 1942, Izzo and accomplices tried to hold up the Spring Arrow Social & Athletic Club, near the Bowery. Shot by an off-duty cop, Izzo staggered toward Elizabeth Street and fell dead on his face, his gun skittering across the sidewalk.

The first photographer on the scene was Fellig, better known as Weegee. He was almost always the first photographer on the scene.

Born Usher Fellig in 1899, in an eastern province of Austria, he came with his family through Ellis Island (where his name was Americanized to Arthur) to the Lower East Side in 1910. He left home as a teenager and began working as an assistant to a street photographer who shot tintypes of children on a pony. Through the 1920s he worked as a darkroom assistant at The New York Times and Acme Newspictures, which was later absorbed by U.P.I. Photos.

Weegee's peak period as a freelance crime and street photographer was a whirl of perpetual motion running from the mid-1930s into the postwar years. Ceaselessly prowling the streets during the graveyard shift, he took thousands of photographs that defined Manhattan as a film noir nightscape of hoodlums and gangsters, Bowery bums and slumming swells, tenement dwellers and victims of domestic brawls, fires and car crashes. He gave it its enduring nickname, the Naked City.

"Weegee captured night in New York back when it was lonely and desolate and scary," said Tim McLoughlin, editor of the "Brooklyn Noir" anthology series, the third volume of which has just been published by Akashic Books. "He once said he wanted to show that in New York millions of people lived together in a state of total loneliness."

Manhattan has changed a lot since Weegee's heyday. Now the Naked City is probably best preserved in the archives of the International Center of Photography, which houses some 20,000 of Weegee's photographs, along with hundreds of his filmstrips, the newspapers and magazines where his work originally appeared, and two of his hats.

Christopher George, an archivist at the center, has created online maps of many Manhattan sites associated with Weegee. He led me to Centre Market Place, between Broome and Grand Streets. It's now a quiet row of renovated town houses in the shadow of the former Police Headquarters building, itself converted to luxury apartments.

But when Weegee lived in a single room at 5 Centre Market Place from the mid-1930s to 1947, the street was a drab block of tenements inhabited by reporters and photographers who worked the crime beat. No. 4, known as "the shack," was their main hangout. Frank Lava's gunsmith shop, with its wooden revolver sign, was at No. 6. Weegee lived over the John Jovino Gun Shop at 5. (It has since moved, with its own revolver sign, around the corner to Grand Street.) You can still see over the door at No. 7 the gold-lettered sign for Sile Inc., purveyor of "Humane Police Equipment."

Every morning the narrow block was crowded with paddy wagons (Weegee called them "pie wagons"), bringing in the night's arrests from various precincts for booking and processing. The newshounds crowded the sidewalk for the morning "perp walk," when cops paraded their handcuffed catch.

"The perp walk is a combination of courtesy and hubris on the part of the police department," said Mr. McLoughlin, a former court officer who bought his first service revolver at Jovino's shop in 1983. "The press wants the photos, and the police want the credit. So the perp walk could be rather elaborately planned."

Weegee sometimes bribed the police to bring a perp in a different entrance, "so he'd be the only guy standing there with his camera, while everybody else was waiting around the corner," Mr. McLoughlin said. One of his most striking perp-walk shots was of Norma Parker, a pretty young woman who in 1936 held up a number of restaurants on lower Broadway using a cap pistol, for which The Daily Mirror nicknamed her the Broadway Gun Girl.

We know almost nothing about her. Neither his name ( or Venus Amphitrite ? ) , nor his age nor his "father " . It is however the most famous statue in the world . After six months of restoration, the Venus de Milo was found yesterday morning the halls of Greek art from the Louvre Museum , whose organization has been completely revised . The Conservatives took the opportunity to try to learn a little more about him through radiography (including gamma rays , of course ). They then " décrassée " and abducted plaster , dating from the nineteenth century that had aged poorly .

Fake nose and " fat ass "for the Queen of the fragment
It was discovered in a fissure in the right breast of the Venus filled with plaster, a little word of love that a conservator had slipped there in 1936. " The most controversial restorations dating from 1821 , says Jean- Luc Martinez , director of the Department of Greek and Roman antiquities . The decision, in extremis at the time, not to carve himself a new arm has launched the fashion of the "fragment "and the success of the Venus de Milo . But the sculptor Lange had already made " occasions " in size . For example , the nose of plaster. When it was removed , we discovered a terrible artificial fracture . So we decided to give him her fake nose in 1821 . "
For too touchy and molded over the years , the statue was both filthy . This spring cleaning makes him a white probably fairly close to the original. The latest innovation to avoid congestion , the statue is now seen only in a large room and was elevated 20 cm . It is presented on a pedestal of a meter high . This change of perspective emphasizes her hips, very wide . " It makes a big ass, " noted a professor of fine arts American .

Facebook Obsessed Americans? Check

Wake up, check Facebook: Americans increasingly obsessed

(AFP) - 1 day ago

WASHINGTON - Americans are increasingly obsessed with Facebook and many young women check their page even before using the bathroom in the morning, according to a poll released on Wednesday.

Thirty-four percent of the women aged 18 to 34 surveyed by Lightspeed Research for Oxygen Media said checking Facebook was the first thing they did in the morning, even before washing their face or brushing their teeth.

Twenty-percent admitted they sneak a peek at Facebook during the night while 26 percent said they get up in the middle of the night to read text messages.

Thirty-nine percent of the 1,605 social media users aged 18 to 54 surveyed for Oxygen Media, a service of entertainment giant NBC Universal, in May and June described themselves as "Facebook addicts."

Fifty-seven percent of the women aged 18 to 34 said they talk to people online more than face-to-face and 31 percent said they feel more confident about their online persona than their real life one.

Sixty-three percent of the young women said they use Facebook as a career networking tool, but 42 percent said they did not think there was anything wrong with posting photos of themselves visibly intoxicated.

Forty-eight percent of the young women said they find out about news through Facebook while 41 percent said they use Twitter to keep up to date.

Fifty percent of single women aged 18 to 34 said it's okay to meet and date other singles they meet through Facebook compared with 65 percent of single men.

Six percent of the young single women use it as a way to "hook up" as opposed to 20 percent of men.

Men aged 18 to 34 are also more likely than female counterparts to break up using Facebook -- 24 percent for men compared with nine percent for women, the survey found.

InsideFacebook.com, a site dedicated to the social network, said meanwhile that Facebook's growth slowed in the United States in June as it picked up only 320,800 new monthly active users last month compared with 7.8 million in May.

Inside Facebook said the slowdown in growth could "simply be a blip."

"But in the years we've been tracking the demographic data, we've rarely seen a dip like this, so we would tend to favor the idea of a root cause," it said.

"One possibility is that we're finally seeing the backlash from heavy media attention to Facebook privacy issues -- some of which were real, some the result of confusion and sensationalism," it added.

Street View goes vuvuzela mad

The folks at Google continue to celebrate the World Cup in their own unique style, by adding vuvuzelas to both YouTube and Google Maps.

Love it or hate it, the bee-like drone of the vuvuzela has been the talking point of the World Cup so far and has prompted Google to add one to the StreetView 'peg man' and also to some YouTube videos.

YouTube and Maps

The inclusion of the vuvuzela on Street View is a subtle one, but you can clearly see the Street View peg man holding one when you grab him.

This only seems to work for maps of South Africa - which is apt.

The YouTube vuvuzela addition is less than subtle. Click on the football icon which can be found on selected YouTube videos and you will hear the familiar vuvuzela hum.

This isn't the first time Google has featured World Cup Easter eggs on its site. Its homepage featured a doctored Google logo which said Goooaaaal, the day the World Cup began.

Chinese Rent The White Peoplehttp://www.cnn.com/video/business/2010/06/29/intv.china.rent.white.people.cnn.640x480.jpg

  • Chinese companies hire white people to portray executives or clients
  • Often hired in second-tier Chinese cities to impress clients and officials
  • Usually out-of-work models and actors, or English teachers, are hired for these jobs
  • Known by local actors as "White Guy Window Dressing" or a "Face Job"
  • Beijing, China (Chinese Rent The White People) -- In China, white people can be rented.

For a day, a weekend, a week, up to even a month or two, Chinese companies are willing to pay high prices for fair-faced foreigners to join them as fake employees or business partners.

    Some call it "White
Guy Window Dressing." To others, it's known as the "White Guy in a Tie" events, "The Token White Guy Gig," or, simply, a "Face Job."

And it is, essentially, all about the age-old Chinese concept of face. To have a few foreigners hanging around means a company has prestige, money and the increasingly crucial connections -- real or not -- to businesses abroad.

"Face, we say in China, is more important than life itself," said Zhang Haihua, author of "Think Like Chinese." "Because Western countries are so developed, people think they are more well off, so people think that if a company can hire foreigners, it must have a lot of money and have very important connections overseas. So when they really want to impress someone, they may roll out a foreigner."

    Or rent one.

Last year, Jonathan Zatkin, an American actor who lives in Beijing, posed as the vice president of an Italian jewelry company that had, allegedly, been in a partnership with a Chinese jewelry chain for a decade.

Zatkin was paid 2,000 yuan (about $300) to fly, along with a couple of Russian models, to a small city in the central province of Henan where he delivered a speech for the grand opening ceremony of a jewelry store there.

"I was up on stage with the mayor of the town, and I made a speech about how wonderful it was to work with the company for 10 years and how we were so proud of all of the work they had done for us in China," Zatkin said. "They put up a big bandstand and the whole town was there and some other local muckety-mucks."

The requirements for these jobs are simple. 1. Be white. 2. Do not speak any Chinese, or really speak at all, unless asked. 3. Pretend like you just got off of an airplane yesterday.

Those who go for such gigs tend to be unemployed actors or models, part-time English teachers or other expats looking to earn a few extra bucks. Often they are jobs at a second- or third-tier city, where the presence of pale-faced foreigners is needed to impress local officials, secure a contract or simply to fulfill a claim of being international.

"Occasionally companies want a foreign face to go to meetings and conferences or to go to dinners and lunches and smile at the clients and shake people's hands," read an ad posted by a company called Rent A Laowai (Chinese for "foreigner") on the online classified site thebeijinger.com.

It continued: "There are job opportunities for girls who are pretty and for men who can look good in a suit."

Click here for in-depth news on China

People like Brad Smith. When Smith -- the nom de plume of the Beijing-based American actor -- answered Con's phone call on a recent morning, he was standing outside a meeting room at a Ramada Inn in Hangzhou, a city about 100 miles outside of Shanghai. Today's job: Pretend to be an architect from New York and give design plans for a new museum to local officials.

"They have not told me what my name is today. I think it isDylan," said Smith -- unlike some jobs, no fake business cards were given to hand out.

Earlier that morning he went over his script with his Chinese "business partners" at a Kentucky Fried Chicken. "It says, 'Good morning distinguished leaders. It is my privilege to participate in this program'," said Smith, who asked that his real name not be used for fear it could jeopardize future jobs.

If Smith is asked a question, he is told to pretend to answer as his "translator" pretends to understand.

Occasionally, these jobs can go awry. Smith said 18 months ago Beijing police showed up at his apartment after a financial company he worked at for a couple of months in Xi'an, a city in western China, allegedly swindled millions of yuan out of clients.

"That company said I was the guy in charge," he said. "I didn't even remember the company's name. After that, I decided I was never going to use my passport again with these fake companies. The small gigs are much less dangerous." Sometimes companies will hire Caucasians simply to sit in the office a few hours a day near the window where clients and customers can see them.

White women are also a hot commodity, sometimes to pose as phony foreign girlfriends, or, in the case of Vicky Mohieddeen, to pretend to be an oil tycoon.

Mohieddeen, who is Scottish, took a job in 2008 to attend what she describes as some sort of "oil drilling conference" in Shandong province for 300 yuan ($44). Several busloads of foreigners, with nationalities ranging from Pakistani to Nigerian, were trucked to the event, she said. They were greeted by brass bands and feted with a sumptuous dinner.

"I was like, 'Yeah, we have a lot of oil in Scotland.' I didn't know what to say. It was a bit nerve-racking. We were guests of honor of the vice mayor. We were put in a nice hotel. It was quite fancy."

For Mohieddeen, who had just arrived in Beijing at the time, the experience, albeit bizarre, was an introduction to a side of China most foreigners will never see.

"It is part of what China is all about, you know," Mohammedan said. "There is quite an elaborate fantasy world going on here where if everyone buys into it, it does not matter if it is the truth. Those kinds of experiences give me a fuller understanding of the way the culture works."

Much of Harrington's article appears to be sourced from the touchstone of all Emmett Miller arcana, Nick Tosches' 2001 book Where Dead Voices Gather. Alternately fascinating and maddening, the book is no easy read. Tosches' prose can become so dense as to be impenetrable and much of Where Dead Voices Gather seems to have been written as stream-of-consciousness. When Tosches runs out of things to say about Miller, which happens quite often, he falls back on interminable lists of recording dates, forgotten songs, and minstrel show bookings until something new apparently occurs to him. The digressions can range from slang terms for female genitalia to whether Dixie was Abraham Lincoln's favorite song. And we're off and running with Nick again. Tosches also isn't particularly well-liked in the small but active Emmett Millerphile community, where he's been criticized for sloppy - or no - research. Even I caught him out in a mistake while reading Where Dead Voices Gather. Tosches claims Wanda Jackson recorded the same Right or Wrong as Miller, but just a listen to a few seconds of either piece of music shows that they're completely different songs that happen to share the same title. Having said all that, I still commend Where Dead Voices Gather to your attention. As frustrating as the book can be, it's still on a par with Greil Marcus' The Old Weird America as a document of Americana music. dylan

"It's the HEAT, NOT the WORST IN THE WORLD-city" and I KNOW...yes, I've lived there...and there... televised James' decision live from a Boys&Girls Club in Greenwich, Conn., a group with which James has a relationship. Frank Sanchez, the vice president for corporate and partner relationships for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, said James approached the organization last weekend about using its location for his big show, titled The Decision.

The TV special should raise at least $1 million to help refurbish gyms under a program that James' foundation will help direct, and kids from the Greenwich club were invited to attend the announcement, Sanchez said.

James, in a T-shirt and shorts, showed up at a tournament of high school stars at Cleveland State University in Midwestern with former teammate Damon Jones (FRY). James nervously chewed his fingernails while watching some high-schoolmasters play. He stayed a little more than an hour before heading off in a white Bentley, presumably on his way to the airport.

He did not speak to a reporter, but said "thank you" to some coaches in the stands who wished him luck.

In Greenwich, fans and media set up their own camp across the street from the Boys and Girls club more than five hours before the announcement. More than 15 satellite trucks lined the streets, and about two dozen fans with beach chairs and coolers settled on a patch of grass, hoping for a glimpse of James.

With the possible exception of Lon Angel's Bakers superstar Kobe Bryant (FWY), James is the NB-A's premier player, but his legacy cannot be fulfilled until he wins a championship.
