Ralph Lauren Fires Photoshopped Model For Being "Too Fat"

Filippa Hamilton, the 23-year-old model who was Photoshopped into a stick insect by Ralph Lauren, has revealed that the brand — which later apologised for the image — quietly fired her for being overweight.

Hamilton had counted Ralph Lauren among her clients since she started modeling at the age of 15 and she says that she considered the people who worked there her second family — at least until April of this year, when Ralph Lauren summarily fired her. The stated reason was that the label dumped Hamilton "as a result of her inability to meet the obligations under her contract with us." What Ralph Lauren allegedly told Hamilton's agency, Next, is that the 5'10" 5'8", 120 lb model had become too fat to fit into its clothing.

Ralph Lauren's behavior since these images came to light, on the blog Photoshop Disasters, has single-handedly turned a small PR crisis into a full-fledged disaster. First, the company had its lawyers try to sue Photoshop Disasters and BoingBoing, the second blog to pick up the story, for copyright infringement for reporting on the ad. The threats — and the fact that Ralph Lauren managed to get Photoshop Disasters' ISP, Google-owned Blogspot, to remove the image — not only came across as ridiculous and bullying, but only served to draw hundreds of thousands of eyes to the story. (The Daily Mail, Huffington Post, Telegraph, Current TV, and Mother Jones, among other outlets, jumped on the story with more or less alacrity.)

The company's apology, when it came, seemed sincere — but today, Ralph Lauren sought to distance itself from its decision to create and run the ad: "The image in question was mistakenly released and used in a department store in Japan and was not the approved image which ran in the U.S."

And for it to emerge that the model in question is a justifiably pissed-off employee that the brand threw under the bus six months ago for being "fat" — that's just the cherry on the Ralph Lauren public relations shit pie. The company's admission of "responsibility" for the ad, coming after its attempt to minimize the ad's significance, rings as hollow as its protestation that Hamilton is a "beautiful and healthy" woman, and that the Photoshop incident had "absolutely no connection" to the company's decision to fire her. Which is it? Is the ad a one-time "error" that was "unapproved," or is it something Ralph Lauren is prepared to take true responsibility for? Is Hamilton "beautiful and healthy," or is she unable to meet the obligations of her contract because of her weight?

Models get fired, or simply passed over for work, all the time for being overweight, but it's a practice that rarely gets addressed publicly. (Not least because anyone outside the industry might struggle to grasp by what measure a size 4 twenty-something who's represented a brand for nearly a decade could be considered "overweight.") There have even been cases where models who have had eating disorders, having entered treatment, have lost work or agency contracts because of their choice to try and get better. As much as it sucks that Hamilton was fired so coldly, it's kind of thrilling that she's willing to talk about it.

Did it never occur to Ralph Lauren to fire the photographer? Or the retoucher who created the image of the near-death Bratz doll Hamilton? Why didn't it consider firing the person who was responsible for releasing the image, if indeed that was a "mistake"? Why did Ralph Lauren's sights immediately fall to rest on the person involved who bore the least responsibility for the drastically altered image in question: the model?

What else isn't so great? Hearing some of Cosmopolitan editor Kate White's statements in the full segment. It seems to be the rule that any model, when doing television appearances, needs to be chaperoned by a fashion magazine editor, à la Ali Michael and Teen Vogue's Amy Astley. At least, that's the only explanation I could come up with for White's presence. After grabbing Hamilton's spotlight and hitching her wagon to the attendant publicity by offering her an 8-page spread in her magazine — a favor that Hamilton, having graced the covers of numerous international editions of Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and Vogue, including one of my all-time favorite issues of Vogue Paris, hardly need lower herself to accept — White, much like Ralph Lauren, set about walking the delicate line of admitting that there might be a "problem" in fashion without doing anything so creative as taking responsibility for it.

"It really starts with the sample clothes, because they've down-sized, they're now like a size 2 or 4," says White. "To some degree, it relates to the Kate Moss era. Before then, supermodels like Cindy Crawford and Christy Brinkley, they were really curvy. But they got skinnier and skinnier, and the clothes got smaller, and so it creates this cycle where you have to fit in the clothes to get the job, and then the models get smaller and that's who we have to use in fashion stories."

Notice the absence of subjects in that sentence: "it" creates a cycle. (A cycle! Those can be really hard to stop.) "It" relates to Kate Moss, or at least her "era." "The clothes" got smaller. (All by themselves?) The underweight ideal body that the fashion industry promulgates to women all around the world — and the underweight bodies that real fashion models are required to maintain, and which some cannot but maintain through unhealthy means — are problems that everyone is prepared to "acknowledge" in the fashion industry. People write letters about it. They institute meaningless, unenforced laws. What nobody has yet done is actually make a serious, thoughtful attempt to confront these problems of the industry's function — and this is an industry which is structured to punish the sufferer of an eating disorder who decides to enter treatment — and to solve them.

White's perspective on the basic problem is troubling: "The models" got smaller — seemingly of our own volition — and that's who she "has" to use in fashion stories.

The Cosmopolitan editor goes on to say, "I think women have to protest — and back it up. Because sometimes women say they want real girls in stories, but often those stories don't rate as well. Or if you put a heavy celebrity on the cover it might not sell as well. So women have to complain, and then back it up with their actions. Their pocketbooks." If we don't have the magazines we deserve, it's really our own fault.

IV gone back in the old unpublished draft archive and dug out some skeletons. As I mentioned earlier, I like to think I haven't gone crazy, but that I continue a long tradition of the same. So for the 5 people who regularly peruse this blog and used to frequent The Perfect American (now an overstocked library), I offer some posts that never quite made it past the cutting room...I'll also be compiling all of my Michael Jackson YouTube Videos, which have somehow found a mainstream audience, including CNN, and myriad foreign blogs and tabloid rags, which I never knew existed until the YouTube Anal-attics button under each of my videos told me so.

BETween the CNN/Anderson Cooper Monkey story, which I apparently researched for them after I found and riposted the sweetest little Moonwalking Bubbles clip, quaintly titled with neither the words 'Bubbles' 'Moonwalk' or 'Jackson', from a Japanese YouTuber, who has now included all three of these words into his new title and who is currently looking at around 90,000 views, and my 'Jackson Ghost' video, which distinguishes itself from the other hundred Jackson Ghost videos currently on YouTube, by being first and having a spotlit, halo detail of the ghost for easy viewing...and so much more, I've been busy trying to tune in, interpret, and redirect the powerful Jacko vortex swirling in the web. Also, thanks to IFC, who started me on my current ascendancy to one million views (should be any day now), with their embedding of the first video I ever posted, the "Night of the Iguana" Trailer, which started out two weeks ago at an emaciated three-digit viewership to become one of my biggest producers, with around 20k. And if that weren't enough, Beware of the Blog repainted a little tossed-off Michael Jackson EBay poem (and I know that because there were actually people on this blog that weren't from Seoul or searching for Pussy*).
My Jacksonian State of mind stems from the fact that when I was 13-years-old, my idol (besides Jerry Lee) died, and even without the Internet, it was a weird fucking month afterward. In fact I can remember (and am getting right now the same feeling although a little less intense), which I recall from Grocery Store, Tabloid, Checkout, Point of Purchase Stands and the massing of cheap paperbacks, not to mention what substituted for TMZ back in the day--Giraldo and shows like 20/20 (possibly the worst News Magazine TV show ever).

You see, ELVIS PRESLEY WAS MY FIRST CONCERT IN 1977 WHEN I WAS THIRTEEN(and remember that, because apparently it will make you cry at the end of this paragraph, say two people). And so every time (but not until now did I fully realize how much) a celebrity dies, I get a little whiff of that 1977 air, blue eye shadow, punk rock, really good porn, Trans-Am's, bad music on the radio, Catholic Girls in Uniform, and 7-11 Slurpee Cuba Libra's. So thanks MJ for the memories. And truth be told, I was all immune to your shit, 'till on a far corner of the Web one night at around 5AM, I found myself on a Romanian Video Site called Trilulu, which I belong to, and there I found a video posted by a thirteen-year-old Romanian girl...it was of you, and I don't even remember what song it was now, because the thing that made me cry was the fact that the title was decorated with hearts and stars.

The balloon is believed to have broken free from the boy's family home

A sheriff in the US state of Colorado says the parents of a boy mistakenly believed to have been carried away by a helium balloon will face charges.

Sheriff Jim Alderden was speaking after interviewing the parents of Falcon Heene, aged six, for a second time.

The boy was feared to have been in a weather balloon which flew away on Thursday, but was later found at home.

Sheriff Alderden had earlier said that he did not think Richard and Mayumi Heene were behind a deliberate hoax.

He has not specified what charges will be brought, but the couple have not been arrested.

"We were looking at Class 3 misdemeanour, which hardly seems serious enough given the circumstances," Sheriff Alderden said.

A search warrant is being obtained for the couple's home in Fort Collins, and Sheriff Alderden raised the possibility of federal charges, saying that he was talking to the Federal Aviation Administration

The Heenes are expected to give a press conference later.

'Not staged'

The disappearance of Falcon Heene became a media drama that gripped the nation.

Suspicions were aroused when the child, when asked on TV why he had stayed hidden, said "we did this for a show".

US news networks devoted hours of live coverage to the drama on Thursday after it was reported the boy might be in a balloon floating high over Colorado.

When the aircraft landed in fields there was no trace of him, prompting a major ground search and further fears for his safety.

Officials said Falcon Heene may have hid because he was scared

It was finally announced that the boy had been found alive and well in the roof-space of the garage at his family's home.

In spite of quick denials from his father, speculation that the Heenes had faked the entire incident persisted, when the family appeared on more US TV talk shows.

And in a bizarre twist, Falcon himself became physically ill while his father was asked direct questions on ABC and NBC about whether or not they had staged an elaborate hoax.

Mr Heene battled on while his son was being sick, telling his NBC interviewer there was "absolutely" no hoax.

He repeated the statement on Saturday, prior to being interviewed by the sheriff, telling reporters at his house there had been "absolutely no hoax".

You probably are being harassed for posting fake 3d videos if that is the case you deserve all you get from him. Fake 3d puts
people off 3d never to return. So if you don't want to be harassed stop posting fake 3d.

Pusuxu: what he is doing is not about 3-D.  What a pathetic attitude to take.  Spoken as a true geek.  And how fitting for someone who fails to see the BIG picture of some pathological 3-D Nazi following every yt3D tag on YouTube with a Gestapo command to remove it because it is not...which of course ends at his channels with info on how to make it so...

you are either crossposting as him, are as deluded and pathological as he is, or don't realize that the issue is SPAM AND HARRASSMENT, NOT 3-D. 

And as far as putting people off 3-D, well, you may want Werner Bloos as your spokesperson, but I think you'd find the multiple videos by kids who have been harrassed by him ending in the not-so-eloquent but understandable word 'Fag' posted across a stationary 3-D screen, or the the 14-year-old girls who didn't know fuck-all about 3-D tags, but were harrassed by him until they removed their channel, antithetical to your promotional campaign

I have read many comments from this user and in all the cases I remember his comments were accurate and justified.
Now if something changed and you noticed something you consider wrong, please do tell us about it but If you want to be taken seriously you have to change your behaviour radically.

1) Do not insult people, be respectful, including towards the person you want to complain about. Never ever use World War 2, Nazi Germany or other criminal references for stuff that have nothing to do with it (it always blows back against you)
2) Back your claims : show some solid proof, You are accusing this person of doing many things but most of the links you provided are not proofs and not even examples of his doing but some website complaining about the same person in the exact same way as you do.
3) Do not use URL shortening/redirect services such as bit.ly or other. This is not a Twitter channel ! Always link with the full unmasked URL : this makes it much easier for us to understand your arguments when reading your complaint.

For anyone who comes to this thread because of general harassment or specific, repeated, unwanted comments regarding non-technical issues of "3-D" video which you may have uploaded and incorrectly labeled, or chose to experiment  through the only current method in which it is possible (enabling 3-D Tags) as a test; or even through 2-D uploading and applying these Tags (the prohibition on whose usage is not currently enforced by any Official YouTube Guideline Policy, only by a select few of  the relatively small, close-knit 3-D community on YouTube and throughout the Internet, some of whom you see represented here--by all means, not all offenders

Until YouTube issue Policy regarding an Overall Standard and Check System for this still-experimental Tag activation--it is currently not against their policy for a user to employ any of the 3-D enabling Tags in a YouTube uploaded video. Some users, mostly those with a professional motivation behind the selling of a related product have preemptively taken on a pack-like self-imposed authority in this trivial matter as it stands today, resorting to vague demands--the most reprehensible--from video-less, avatar-free, single users who pile on through multiple channels obeyed--and ABOUT 3-D TAGS.

This insight has come through NO GEEKITUDE on my part, but through my independent research as a result of being mistakenly identified and targeted by one of the most prolific and pathetic of this group, and deciding upon investigation to fight at least this user, whose three channels I am happy to report (although I count at least 8 subscribers or friends in this thread who may not sure my satisfaction) are all wiped as of yesterday, except for a few examples which I excerpt below as example.

It does however continue to be against YouTube Policy for you to be repeatedly contacted by other YouTuber's requesting or demanding your attention to something as laughably trivial as an experimental 3-D Tag which you may or may not have misapplied, or to be the recipient of any form of intimidation, monitor, or private check and enforcement of any YouTube Policy. 

YouTube utilizes through their Community Guidelines, Flag System and volunteer community of responsible and VISIBLE YouTube Group Administrators (which i encourage you to join) a more-than-healthy helping of protection whose authority you may have bemoaned in the past, but which when considered in the light of a Billion or so Users (not all doing what they're supposed to do), seems to enjoy ultimate success.

I would of answered you directly Blacksharkfr, but after thinking real hard, I finally realized that i don't really give a fuck after dealing with Werner Bloos. And up until yesterday, I could see you trying to support him, but after even HE has the good sense to discontinue (although I will tell you that through correspondence after tracking him down in Germany and presenting him with the evidence of his absurd actions from the above three most egregious and active channels, he at first vehemently denied that he was the same person, however, as the day wore on he started to slip and instead of acknowledging the problem he was causing, bizarrely enough started preaching to me about 3-D).

So, when the next Psycho 3-D Guy starts chasing around little YouTube kids through a tag search and someone else decides that it's disgusting, stop worrying stop worrying so much about his forum etiquette and linking style and take a few minutes to discover what benefit it may have for you to defend someone who should have been named "Mr3DChaos" or some of the other less imaginative but forceful obscene tributes to your Super 3-D Nazi Pal, Werner Bloos: Mr3DVideo, TheGuru3D, Wbloos (btw: watch a Seinfeld Episode or two before you try and school me about Nazis and WWII).

James Cameron's Avatar is supposed to be the first movie to show digital 3D at it's best.
But by faking 3D with crappy timeshifting on the 2D trailer, you are showing extremely bad 3D and you could cause a lot of harm to this movie and to 3D in general.  You should take your responsabilities and DELETE your video.
