Posterous is Joining the Flock at Twitter

Big news: Posterous has been acquired by Twitter!

The opportunities in front of Twitter are exciting, and we couldn’t be happier about bringing our team’s expertise to a product that reaches hundreds of millions of users around the globe. Plus, the people at Twitter are genuinely nice folks who share our vision for making sharing simpler.

Posterous Spaces will remain up and running without disruption. We’ll give users ample notice if we make any changes to the service. For users who would like to back up their content or move to another service, we’ll share clear instructions for doing so in the coming weeks.

They'll keep the servers running, but no one is going to be maintaing the site or really fixing bugs. They'll keep it running until a problem crops out that would require a lot of man hours to fix, and they'll just shut it down.

Don't like. I really liked the Posterous platform before the SPACES model emerged, and I thought the mobile services available for iPhone was a good direction for the platform. I have even considered purchasing the third-party iPad app Blogsy which supports blogging for Posterous, but I'm less likely to do so now. This may sound odd because it's a free platform but I feel slightly betrayed by all this. I am happy for the Posterous guys, they get new stuff to play with and I don't' berudge them that, but I have an emotional investment in my blogging platform. I don't blog much and it's only for family, but it took me a long time to start and Posterous got me going. It's great to use and now it's just going to disappear and I'm left to sort out the mess.
This is the sort of thing that keep people away from startups and going to Blogger or wordpress cos they're going to be around in 5 years time.

This is the exact reason that I did not put any type of important blog on Posterous. The concept is awesome, but in the back up my head since day one was that Posterous would eventual be bought out and shut down.

Users: Don't fool yourself, move your blogs to a major platform and use major platforms in the future to avoid this. (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, etc.)

Posterous Team: Although this sounds negative, I don't mean for it to be. You guys are absolutely amazing and made a great product. I am really happy you are going to Twitter to help make it even better. You deserve it!

The verbiage chosen is VERY careful to not mention the future of posterous itself. That means that they don't know what to do with it, and/or don't want it, or have already made a decision to ditch it, and they're just going to let it die.

I'm sad - because I love this service, and how stupidly easy it's made maintaining a blog. I've been looking forward to the day when I could actually fork over money for a premium membership to help ensure that the lights stayed on. I've worked for small companies and consulted at start-ups, and I know that it's a brutal uphill battle, and there's no guarantee that a service, no matter how great, will survive. But if this is it, man... guys... just be honest and say "Look, it was a great run - we tried hard to make it work, and we appreciate everyone's support, but we had to make the hard choice to keep food on the table, and bailing on posterous to go work at twitter was the only real choice". I can get that, and any reasonable person reading that would have been down with it too.

If you're not shuttering the service... man, I think you need to clarify things a bit. And if you are, just be straight with us. I'll buy you a drink if I see any of you guys out in SOMA, and thank you for the years you did give us.

I am worried. I chose to use Posterous over Twitter and Facebook because of its robust privacy settings, clean interface and ease of use. Facebook and Twitter are design nightmares and lack the compartmentalization that is so attractive with Posterous. I volunteer my work for non-profit organization in organizing their website. Late last year, I had made the recommendation to them in migrating their current website to Posterous and I was in the final stages of migration (including domain name transfer).

I've learned the news of the acquisition today. From your statements in the FAQ, I am seriously questioning that whether Posterous is in for the long term, and that migrating the organization's website is a serious risk in future service disruptions. (Statement such as "for users who would like to back up their content or move to another service" is not a sound of confidence to me.)

As a result, I am recommending to the organization of placing the website migration plan on hold.

I've been a fan of this platform since discovering it two years ago and I must conclude, reluctantly, that this is the end. I'll continue to use it for as long as it remains viable, but as they are already telling us they will provide clear direction on how to move our content, it's obvious that it's on its way out.

yep.. i'm going to start my migration. huge bummer.. just got good with posterous and had come over from blogger and now will probably head back to it or to wordpress. don't kid yourselves.. twitter (which i don't really enjoy) is all about acquisition and growth, not the consumer and especially NOT the posterous users. thanks for the run, posterous. and way to sell out to the man. you had a great thing going.
