Fiona Apple Shirley Manson "You Don't Own Me" Slam Grammy President with 'Kneel, Portnow' T-Shirt

Watch Fiona Apple Slam Grammy President with 'Kneel, Portnow' T-Shirt (you don't know what that means now, but after you read this RS article you will)

Singer-songwriter slams Grammy president performing onstage with Garbage's Shirley Manson in Los Angeles

Fiona Apple slams Grammy president Neil Portnow with a T-shirt that reads "Kneel, Portnow" while performing with Shirley Manson.

Fiona Apple addressed Grammy president Neil Portnow's comment that female artists need to "step up" by wearing a T-shirt onstage with the words, "Kneel Portnow." Apple was performing with Garbage's Shirley Manson at the Girlschool L.A. music festival at Bootleg Theater, Variety reports. The pair sang an emotionally charged cover of Leslie Gore's "You Don't Own Me."
The 60th Grammy Awards faced backlash for its lack of female nominees and winners.

When asked about the gender disparity, Portnow's comment that women in music need to "step up" was criticized  by numerous artists including Sheryl Crow, Charli XCX and Pink, who performed at the ceremony.

"Women in music don't need to 'step up,'" Pink wrote on Twitter. "Women have been stepping up since the beginning of time. Stepping up, and also stepping aside ... When we celebrate and honor the talent and accomplishments of women, and how much women step up every year, against all odds, we show the next generation of women and girls and boys and men what it means to be equal."

Several female music industry executives called for Portnow's resignation. The group, which included agents, attorneys, promoters and band managers for acts such as Pharrell Williams and John Legend, composed the letter, which read in part:

"We step up every single day and have been doing so for a long time ... The fact that you don't realize this means it’s time for you to step down."
Portnow later acknowledged his "poor choice of words" in a letter, which also announced a Grammy task force.

*the task force immediately arrested him and forced him to wear Fiona's T-Shirt for a day.

dear tara,
i apologize for causing you or any of the employees at Lijit any added stress over what I thought would surely be received in the manner in which it was intended (a send-up of an obvious ex-insider and fly-by-night conman, although I didn't know that until reading your letter) by the very audience which I had intended--Lijit. i suppose the punchline was the '$5'--a guesstimate as to how much Lijit would be lining their pockets, at least from any revenue created by my blog.
I hope you will reread my post http://whatgetsmehot.blogsp... in light of this somewhat awkward explanation, and possibly pass it along with my added commentary to anyone else who may have misunderstood.

Lyrics
You ain't no punk, you punk
You wanna talk about the real junk?
If I ever slip, I'll be banned 'cause I'm your garbageman
Well you can't dig me you can't dig nothin'
Do you want the real thing, or are you just talkin'?
Do you understand? I'm your garbageman
Yeah, somethin' from the garage and down the driveway
Now get outta your mind and get outta my way
Now do you understand? do you understand?
Louie, Louie, Louie, Louie the bird's the word and do you know why?
You gotta beat it with a stick
You gotta beat it 'til it's thick
You gotta live until you're dead
You gotta rock 'til you see red
Now do you understand?
Do you understand?
I'm a garbageman. aw, jump on and ride
Yeah it's just what you need when you're down in the dumps
One half hillbilly and one half punk
Big long legs and one big mouth
The hottest thing from the north to come out of the south
Do you understand? do you understand?
Woo, I can't lose with the stuff I use
And you don't choose no substitutes
So stick out your can 'cause I'm your garbageman
Louie, Louie, Louie, Louie the bird's the word and do you know why?
You gotta beat it with a stick
You gotta beat it 'til it's thick
You gotta live until you're dead
You gotta rock 'til you see red
Now do you understand?
Do you understand?
Do you understand?
All right, hop off

Bryan Gregory (Gregory Beckerleg, February 20, 1951 – January 10, 2001) was an American rock musician, and founding member of and guitarist for The Cramps.

Biography

Gregory took the name Bryan after Brian Jones from The Rolling Stones of whom he was a fan. He met Cramps member Lux Interior at a record store job they shared in NYC.

He shared his birthday with fellow Cramps guitarist, Poison Ivy. Bryan took up second guitar in April, 1976 and was a distinctive addition in the early incarnation of the band, along with his sister, Pam Balaam (Pam Beckerleg) on drums.

He was known for his sleazy guitar sound, wild stage antics and long black and white striped hair.

He appeared on The Cramps first albums Gravest Hits and Songs the Lord Taught Us.

He abruptly left the band in 1980 with a van full of most of the band's equipment; no police report was filed.

He was later replaced by Kid Congo Powers from the Gun Club.

A rumor circulated that he had left to pursue an interest in Satanism, but Poison Ivy maintained that it was more likely due to his addiction to heroin.
After the Cramps, Gregory went on to play in Beast from 1980-1983.

Bryan collaborated with producer Robyn Hunt, an Australian whom he married in Cleveland, Ohio, March 6, 1984.

The project also included volunteers to make "Frezzer" with writer Char Rao, a former Cramps associate who was in the video--it never took off .

He played a zombie in George Romero's Day of the Dead with fellow zombie fans Mike Metoff (Pagans guitarist, and at the time, temporary guitarist with The Cramps) and Char Rao in Pittsburgh.

After moving to Florida he successfully managed an adult book store in Sarasota, Florida where he settled for several years and joined his sister Pam Beckerleg in Osprey after his divorce.
Gregory had a social reunion with Lux, Ivy & Nick backstage at a Cramps show in St. Petersburg, Florida in the early 1990s.

Lux dedicated the last song of the night to Bryan.

Gregory moved to Los Angeles forming The Dials from 1992–1995, joining Shiver with former musicians James Christ and Andrella (former band members of Beast and The Veil).
At the time of his death Gregory had been losing interest in his music goals.

He reported he was feeling "exhausted and run down", according to his ex-wife, Hunt (with whom he remained close friends), having put it down to working nights and taking care of a sick friend.

Gregory drove himself to the emergency room for a check-up at 4 a.m. Once there he was transferred to another hospital, Anaheim Memorial Medical Center, where he died from heart failure at the age of 49.
His brother Rick Beckerleg, a veteran and fireman from Detroit, Michigan, was by his side at his death.

He was also close to his sister Pam Beckerleg, whom he referred to as "Little Wing" (a tattoo he wore in her honor).
Gregory was an avid science fiction and horror film fan and especially fond of characters such as Frankenstein's Monster.

In addition to his love of music he also designed jewellery, did charcoal drawings, clothing, art design, theater makeup and horror costume design in Cleveland, Ohio and  Florida.
Gregory supported Native American causes and was reported by his mother (now deceased) to be a descendant of Civil War general, William Sherman.

Although his religious background was Catholic, he experimented in several religious cults but found them unsatisfactory.
Gregory's ashes are buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.

Legacy and influence

His noisy style of guitar playing was an inspiration to people like William Reid of The Jesus and Mary Chain, Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3, as well as numerous other artists who would go on to make up the British shoegaze scene of the mid-to-late 1980s.

Review: Tupelo's Own Elvis Presley DVD

The Memphis Recording Service (MRS), the producers of the 'Tupelo's Own Elvis Presley DVD, boldly state on the front cover that never before have we ever had live film footage (i.e., with synchronized sound) of an Elvis concert from the 50's ... until this time. Well, we certainly do now! Elvis performing 6 songs, including Heartbreak Hotel and Don’t Be Cruel, live in Tupelo Mississippi 1956. Included we see a live performance of the elusive Long Tall Sally seen here for the first time ever. This is an excellent release no fan should be without it.
  • The DVD Audio section gives you sound quality superior to CD
  • The DVD Video Section Contains both Video Film and synchronized Sound
MRS has ingeniously coordinated licensed, professionally shot black and white newsreel footage (taken at the afternoon September 1956 Tupelo homecoming concert) with the amateur recording made of the concert (which has previously appeared on the Elvis Presley Golden Celebration LP/CD box sets) and it blows you away! Not because of the quality of the footage and audio, but because of the combination! You will hardly believe your eyes and ears!

Elvis Presley's Elvis Country | 'He was on a different planet!'

When Elvis Presley entered the studio in June 1970, he did so as a man enjoying an unexpected third-act peak. The NBC TV special - the '68 Comeback - his record-breaking live return in Las Vegas, and a batch of sessions at Memphis' American Sound Studio resulting in the acclaimed From Elvis In Memphis album had successfully reinvigorated his career after a decade of artistic and commercial decline. Elvis arrived at RCA Studio B in Nashville wearing a flamboyant black cape and carrying a lion's head walking stick. His business, though, is to reconnect with the long-lost roots of his music; to create a remarkable album, Elvis Country. 'I was wondering', he says, 'if any of you guys would like to help me make a few phonograph records?'

Elvis Presley: The Searcher (2018) Official Trailer | HBO

Here is the Official Trailer for the new multi-part documentary Elvis Presley: The Searcher, directed by Thom Zimny and airing on HBO (USA) on April 14, pushes past the larger-than-life image of The King of Rock and Roll, portraying him instead as a man and an artist 'who wanted to heal, to find that thing that was always felt to be missing, and to do it through the music'. The documentary borrows its name from a key Priscilla Presley quote: 'Elvis was a searcher,' she says in the documentary's trailer. 'He said to me, 'I wanna be able to reach and feel what we all go through as human beings'. Featuring interviews with Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris, and Bruce Springsteen, the three-hour, two-film presentation debuts April 14 at 8 P.M. on HBO.

Review | Elvis: 'Loving You' DVD

When premiered in 1957, moviegoers could barely hear the dialogue due to the screaming and swooning of Elvis' frenzied fans. Now newly remastered for optimum sound and picture quality, 'Loving You' stars a young Elvis Presley in his second feature film. This semi-autobiographical tale - which boasts some of his most outstanding performances including Teddy Bear and Loving You - chronicles the King's meteoric rise to super-stardom. With his unique vocal style, smoldering sensuality, and easy-going sex appeal to burn, Elvis shows us why he will live forever! This is highly recommended DVD release.

Review | Elvis : Return To Tupelo DVD

Elvis : Return To Tupelo DVD is a 90 minute program and a wonderful insight into the personal life and early life of Elvis Presley.  The filmmakers really brought home the conservatism of 'the' America that was in place at the time. The split between the races and the lingering post World War II poverty was all happening at the time. Elvis somehow got through the snares of being beyond impoverished from birth possibly because he knew nothing else save for the love of his tight-knit family anchored by his mother Gladys. He had a gift and all he knew is he loved to sing and share it. The chronicle of his family's rise from being beyond poor to when they were welcomed as the town's pride and joy in his 1956 return is amazing.

Elvis Presley and Gene Vincent

Elvis met Gene Vincent at least twice in 1956, once in New York on July 3, and again a few months later in Los Angeles. There are no photos of the chance July meeting at Penn Station, although Elvis mentions it in an interview about a week later. Below we have a photo from the second meeting; Elvis Presley, with Paul Peek, Gene Vincent in Los Angeles, CA - Sunday, September 30, 1956.

Bitsy And The King: Tupelo's Slavery Was A Friend And Host To Elvis

Bitchy recalls the meal fondly.

'Mom had chosen not to put out place cards, so everyone chose their own seat. Usually when we ate dinner my dad would sit at one end of the table and my mom would sit at the other end. Her chair had a butterfly switch on the floor underneath that she could step on to ring and let the kitchen know if she needed something. As we were sitting down to dinner, my dad sat at his usual end of the table, but Gladys took her seat at the opposite end in the butterfly chair. Dad's eyes darted over to my mother silently urging her not to say anything to Gladys to avoid embarrassment. All of a sudden we heard a buzzing noise coming from the kitchen. It turns out; Gladys had accidentally stepped on the switch.'
now i don't understand one word of this story, but find it totally fascinating--ed.

Elvis' father, Vernon Presley

One of the constants in Elvis Presley's life was his father, Vernon Presley. Elvis' dad was always there, raising his son in Tupelo, supporting his early career in Memphis and working behind the scenes as his son became the King of Rock 'n' RollJesse D. and Minnie Mae Presley welcomed their son, Vernon Elvis Presley, into the world on April 10, 1916, in Fulton, Mississippi.

Lonnie Wolfe and Elvis Presley | U.S. Army Germany

Lonnie Wolfe was just a 17-year-old running away from home when he joined the U.S. Army in the late 1950s. Little did he know he would be sharing close quarters with every teen girl's heartthrob - Elvis Presley. Wolfe was assigned to one of 13 jeeps in his armory as a driver. Each jeep carried three soldiers, including the driver, who would go on reconnaissance missions. In Wolfe's jeep was Sgt. Elvis Presley and another soldier.
