Another charmer from the Lewis "family" (Louie in the director's chair as usual, with "sister" Jo Ann producing in this case), BRIEF AFFAIR is a good example of the breezy, light-hearted kind of adult movie these people specialized in. Though modestly budgeted, their films always had a glossy look courtesy of fine cinematography and soft, hazy back-lighting – invariably uncredited – and the presence of a large number of industry alumni. In terms of quality, this one's just a cut below their best (a triumvirate consisting of TOUCH ME IN THE MORNING, MEMPHIS CATHOUSE BLUES and PLEASE, MR. POSTMAN) but still well ahead of their wildly overrated 8 TO 4.

Taking its inspiration from Alan Parker's FAME, the bulk of the action takes place in and around the Lewis Academy of Performing Arts over a single day. Star pupil Sinclair (superstar Annette Haven) wakes up late for class but still finds time to squeeze in some early morning lovemaking with the guy she met at a bar the night before (frequent screen partner Paul Thomas) who's flying off to New York in the evening. Having fallen head over heels in love, she ponders whether she'll ever see him again throughout the entire school day. Meanwhile, her classmates get up to all kinds of extra-curricular mischief. Beautiful Bridgette Monet (who pretty much sabotaged her shot at stardom by declaring herself a one man woman after just a couple of movies) has her own way of making the grade by seducing her stern dance teacher Ms. Till (the late lamented Lisa DeLeeuw looking rather matronly even though she was just in her mid-20s) as well as her music professor, played by significant other Dave Cannon. Rival Nicole Noir (star of Joe Sherman's amiably silly MOMENTS OF LOVE) goes out of her way to prove that music students Mike Horner (a/k/a "Don Hart") and Ken Starbuck are gay by reputation only in a real scorcher of a threesome. AIM founder and guiding light Sharon Mitchell turns up the heat even further with a seductive striptease prior to her videotaped acting class experiment with tall, dark and handsome Blair Harris. Petite princess Loni Sanders finds stray bum Joey Silvera in the girls' locker room and tries to get it on with him over the course of the entire movie, forever interrupted by the other girls. In a return to plot, Ms. Till has secured Sinclair an audition for a NY dance troupe and take a wild guess as to who the choreographer turns out to be…

Basically a string of sex scenes connected by the unity of time and place, this moves along at a snappy pace. The seasoned cast obviously knows what it's doing, making for generally good groping, plus there's just enough of the central romance to keep the ladies in the audience happy. The achingly gorgeous Annette is, of course, the perfect leading lady, projecting a vulnerability and warmth that makes her character easy to empathize with even while she's agonizing at considerable length over the viability of her latest crush. Lisa DeLeeuw, who passed away from AIDS in 1993, really makes a meal out of the starchy dance instructor, playing the part for more than it's worth as was her forte. May she live on forever in our collective hearts and minds…
