Igorrote Women Waiting for Dog Meat ~ Philippine Islands

You are bidding on an Old Stereoview

This one is titled: " 1319. Igorrote Women Waiting for a Feast of Dog Meat, Philippine Islands "

Printed on the back: No. 1319 - The Igorrotes inhabiting the mountainous region in the northwestern part of the Island of Luzon are probably of mixed origin, part Tagalian and part Chinese-Japanese. There are about 40,000 of them. They are quite intelligent, and even under Spanish rule they were much occupied in mining. Irrigation is and was much used by them in cultivating tobacco, rice, corn, sweet potatoes, mangoes, sugar cane and oranges. They raise many domestic animals for food, horses, cattle, dogs, hogs and chickens. They know how to obtain salt from salt water springs, and alcoholic beverages from rice and sugar cane. They are very warlike.

The Spanish came in contact with them in 1660 but did not succeed in getting a foothold in their country until 1829. As late as 1880 hostilities broke out between the Spanish and the Igorrotes, who obstinately resisted the attempts to make them support Spanish priests. Their own religion knows of a Supreme Being who lives in the sky, but of a cult they know nothing. According to their teaching the soul of a dying human being changes into a harmless creature of human or animal shape, an Anito. But the Anito of the chief of a family is an object of great dread. "
