Blogging Their Way To The Front Row

A little over a month ago we wrote about 13 year old blogger extraordinaire Tavi landing the cover of Pop magazine. But she’s not the only blogger making waves outside of internet land with fashion bloggers being bestowed gifts as wild and unimaginable as big show front row seats, invites to fancy elite balls and becoming ambassadors for designer labels.

French blogger Garance Doré found herself front row saying “…suddenly being catapulted onto the A-list of a prestigious design house is really validating, it’s also really embarrassing. And in this universe of set codes and delicately kept rights-of-passages, it pisses everyone off just a little.” She was one of four new front-row faces along with partner Scott Schuman aka The Sartorialist, Bryan Boy and Tommy Ton of Jak & Jil fame. D&G even went so far as to provide the fantastic four with laptops so they could blog and tweet to their heart’s content mid show.

Away from the catwalk, teen blogger Jane Aldridge of Sea of Shoes has been invited to the very fancy, very prestigious, very chic Hôtel de Crillon Bal des Débutantes, and if it wasn’t enough of a fairytale – she will be wearing Chanel Haute Couture. Chanel have continued playing fairy godmother with blogger Alix Bancourt of Cherry Blossom Girl being named the ambassador for Chanel’s new line of bags Coco Cocoon.

I blog, but I’m still waiting for the front row passes and b-grade celeb status, unfortunately even a blog about cats that look like Hitler is more popular than mine… sigh.

HOLLYWOOD -- The extradition, sentencing, and punishment of Academy Award winning Director Roman Polanski for drugging and raping a 13 year-old girl would represent a chilling assault on artistic freedom according to the National Organization of Tinseltown Recording Artists & Professional Entertainers Rallying Against Polanski's Extradition.

"To pretend that an Oscar winner should be held to the same standard of justice as a layperson is an insult to the Academy and all of Hollywood. Prosecuting a genius like Roman Polanski - who's been nominated many times for writing and directing classic films like Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown, Tess, and The Pianist - is saddening and outrageous," said NOT RAPE RAPE spokesperson Whoopi Goldberg.

"Treating him like an anonymous frat boy that slipped some freshman girl a roofie is totally irresponsible," Goldberg said, "Oscar winners have carte blanche in this town. He'd already been nominated once, he was the talk of the town. It was only a matter of time."

"When I first arrived in L.A., Martin Balsam and Richard Dreyfuss sodomized me practically every day. I took it like a man. No butcher knife was brandished, the alleged victim's clothing was not torn, and the alleged victim was at Mr Polanski's residence with her parents' consent. She drank champagne, took goofballs, and jumped in the Jacuzzi. She wanted it.

The arrest and prosecution of Roman Polanski will have a chilling effect on freedom of expression and artistic license. The creative energy that drives our entertainment industry cannot be understood by average citizens and must not be constrained by the mores of middle America. We're not talking about making snuff films, we're just asking you to turn a blind eye when we ply pre-pubescent girls with pills and alcohol.

We demand Roman Polanski be released immediately.

Joining NOT RAPE RAPE are dozens of filmmakers who signed the "'No Means No,' unless it's someone famous or wealthy or well connected, in which case 'No means Yes - and of course I'm Eighteen, silly!'" petition to demand Mr. Polanski's immediate release. Among the signees are such luminaries as fellow Oscar winners Woody Allen, Jonathon Demme, and Martin Scorsese.

"The forbidden attraction between a man and a young girl was an important subplot of Taxi Driver," says Martin Scorsese. "I kept telling Bobby (DeNiro), 'You know, I wrote this script so you'd have an excuse to plow Jodie (Foster). Listen to how she's begging you for it. She's a freakin' hooker, for Christ's sake. Give it to her.' But Bobby's a method guy. He was her big brother, her avenging angel. No way Travis would do something like that, so Bob wouldn't."

Woody Allen was equally outraged, "I don't understand. What's the big deal? Is it because he didn't marry her?"

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld, Recording artists Jerry Lee Lewis, R. Kelly, Phil Specter, as well as former Congressman Mark Foley have joined NOT RAPE RAPE in demanding Mr Polanski's release.

In 99.99% of all cases, they're just trying to shock and disgust you: you need to block them from your channel and delete their posts. If they are persistent, use the so called "friend lock": set everything (channel profile, individual videos, private messages) to accept only messages from people on your friends list.

If you have good reason to believe you or your daughter are in actual danger, you need to contact the police.

Man Indicted for Civil Rights Violations in Connection with Cross-Burning in Athens, Louisiana

WASHINGTON—Acting Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Division Loretta King and U.S. Attorney Donald W. Washington for the Western District of Louisiana announced that Daniel Earl Danforth, 30, of Minden, La., has been indicted by a federal grand jury for hate crime violations and obstruction of justice charges stemming from a cross-burning in Athens, La., last year near the home of an interracial couple.  Danforth was arrested today following the return of the indictment on Sept. 25, 2009.

Danforth was charged with one count of interfering with the housing rights of another person; one count of conspiring to interfere with another person’s civil rights; one count of using fire during the commission of a felony; and one count of obstructing justice by destroying evidence.  If convicted, he faces a maximum punishment of 10 years for each of the civil rights counts, 10 additional years for the use of fire and 20 years for the obstruction of justice count.

According to the indictment, between Oct. 23 and Oct. 26, 2008, Danforth agreed with at least one other person to build, erect and burn a cross near the home of an interracial couple and relatives who were believed to approve of the interracial relationship.  After attempting to recruit others to join the conspiracy, Danforth and his co-conspirator used small pine trees to form a cross, which they then transported to an area adjacent to the victims’ home and where they set the cross on fire in order to intimidate the couple.  The indictment also alleges that several days later, after the defendant learned that the FBI was investigating this crime as a potential civil rights violation, he returned to the area and removed the cross to prevent the FBI from discovering it.

This case was investigated by the FBI.  The case will be prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary J. Mudrick for the Western District of Louisiana and Trial Attorney Erin Aslan from the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

The charges set forth in an indictment are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Die Hotline beim amerikanischen Hilfsdienst für Vergewaltigungs- und Inzestopfer läuft seit dem Geständnis heiss. «Die Website hat 82 Prozent mehr Clicks und 26 Prozent mehr Anrufe», gibt sich Phillips überrascht. «Ich wollte anderen Opfern nur helfen und selbst Erlösung und Freiheit finden.»

Nur ihre Familie zerbrach an der Offenheit der Tochter. Die Witwe des Hippie-Sängers nahm es der Tochter wohl übel, dass sie ihren Vater öffentlich zum Sex-Grüsel machte. (b3i)

He said the 76-year-old Polish director had been on "red notice" by Interpol, alerting other countries that the US was seeking extradition.

But he said proper legal channels had to be followed, which meant they had to know Polanski's specific whereabouts before a country could be asked to act.

Previously, Los Angeles deputy district attorney Richard Doyle had stated in court testimony: "He knows where he can go. He knows where he can't go. He's been a careful man all these years."

But Mr Berg said: "How hard would it be to find someone shooting a major film in a European country?

"He travels with transparency across Europe. It makes no sense."

According to the Associated Press, the Swiss Criminal Court has said Polanski's lawyers have requested the film-maker's release but precedent in Swiss law shows that the subjects of extradition requests are normally kept in detention.

He is being held in Zurich, where he has been allowed to meet his wife, French actress Emmanuelle Seigner, as well as lawyers.

Post-production work on Polanski's latest film, The Ghost, starring Pierce Brosnan and Ewan McGregor, has been halted.

Mr Berg said that, while editing had been completed, there was still work to do on the music score and other post-production details.

Staying away

Meanwhile, a petition circulating in France, where the director has made his home, has drawn support from film-makers including Pedro Almodovar, Stephen Frears and The Pianist writer Ronald Harwood.

Polanski pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with an under-age girl following a plea bargain. He had originally been charged with six offences including rape and sodomy.

Polanski 'well' despite detention

But he fled the US before he could be sentenced and has not returned to the country since.

In the past year, his legal team has had a request turned down to have a hearing on the rape charge heard outside the US.

Lawyers are trying to get the case dismissed on the grounds that the original trial was the subject of "judicial and prosecutorial misconduct".

The victim at the centre of the case, Samantha Geimer, has previously asked for the charges to be dropped. She has already sued Polanski and reached an undisclosed settlement.

A Talk with Yamato superstar Isao Sasaki

In 1999, Bandai Visual's Footwork imprint published this book by Leo Anzai, titled the Space Battleship Yamato Legacy. Its 248 pages covered the first TV series and its attendant phenomenae in great detail, ending with an insightful interview with the one and only Mr. Isao Sasaki. In it, the legendary "Voice of Yamato" shared his privileged viewpoint of the experience. It is presented here for the first time in English.

Voice actor and singer--these are the two faces of all around nice guy, Mr. Isao Sasaki. He sang many of the best songs for Space Battleship Yamato, and also did the voice for Hajime Saito [Sergeant Knox] in Farewell to Yamato and Yamato 2. And nobody else can sing the The Scarlet Scarf like he can. Currently working as an actor and TV celebrity, we asked Mr. Sasaki about that time...

You debuted as a singer, then eventually became a voice actor for Gatchaman [Battle of the Planets]. Would you please tell us more about how this came about?

While I was singing, I was also acting in various venues, including the movies. When I was nearly 20, the Agatha Christie play And Then There Were None was playing at the Yomiuri Hall. The stage director at the time was Mr. Mizumoto. After I was working in acting for a while, Mr. Mizumoto (by then he was a dubbing director for foreign movies) remembered me and asked, "Hey, Sasaki...aren't you called the Japanese Elvis? Would you care to be the voice of Elvis in the movies?" And that's how I became the voice actor for an Elvis Presley movie. It was the first time I had done anything like that, but word got around and before I knew it, I had several voice-acting jobs waiting for me.

While I was doing this, Mr. Mizumoto calls me up and says, "We're gonna be doing Gatchaman," and he goes on about how they were working with this other fellow, and asked if I was interested in this type of job. At the time I was just starting out, so I quickly replied, "I'll do it! I'll do it!" When I went to the audition, they had me play the part of Ken. But my voice didn't match what they had in mind, so I figured it was all over. Then they had me try out for the part of Joe... [Which he got]

After doing Gatchaman for a while, the company calls me up and says, "You mind doing a song for a new project called Casshern?"

So, once you sang for Gatchaman, you ended up singing elsewhere, too?

Gatchaman ran for about 2 years. Because the ratings were good, they had a party. One of the guys there said, "Hey, Sasaki. Aren't you a singer?" And that's how I got my break as an anime singer.

In the '70's, the songs were separated into groups. Kids' songs on one side, and the adults in the other.

Yes, each genre stayed pretty much in their own group. Folk in folk songs, rock in rock songs. Even anime had its own group.

And isn't that how you got to sing the hit song Space Battleship Yamato and Kenji Sawada sang From Yamato with Love?

Those songs really fit in with the times, yes? But for me, I truly believe The Scarlet Scarf was the one that really struck home with anime fans.

That's true. Speaking of which, even though the music of Yamato was epoch-making in its scope, when it came to singing the main song, were there ever any differences in opinion between Producer Nishizaki and Leiji Matsumoto?

During that time, Matsumoto-sensei tended to stay in the background. The Producer was running a one-man show, and he kept Matsumoto-sensei working on the art and characters. I didn't even have a chance to meet with Matsumoto-sensei at the beginning or production.



A 1979 photobook & career retrospective

After Yamato became a hit movie, and everybody wanted to see it, what were your feelings at the time?

After my debut, there was a period when jobs were scarce. And when I was called back to work, I was truly happy. The numerous fans enlightened me that there was this genre, and I felt like I made it!

I'm from the Kansai area, and back in '77, you came to the Takarazuka Family Land to sing. I got there in the morning, and when you got to the part of the theme that went, "We cheerfully answer the people waving their hands," I waved to you. And then you waved back, so I figured I must have gotten your attention.

(Laughter) I see...

And when I decided to get your autograph, I found there was an enormous crowd of people where you were, and I couldn't get through.

I must admit that surprised me, too. I had figured anime was just for kids, but I found myself entertaining people of all ages, including a whole lot of girl students. Mothers and fathers who knew me from way back brought their kids, a second generation of fans. Then, I thought, "I'm still popular with the young people."

The two projects you were involved with, Gatchaman and Yamato---can they be described as an early version of the anime subculture?

I was just lucky to have been involved with the two big anime projects of their day. If the Producer had gone down a different path, I wouldn't have sang for Yamato, and if they had chosen a different voice actor for Gatchaman, then I wouldn't have been doing that. Kind of funny how luck was with me then. Lately, I've been saying that if Mr. Mizumoto hadn't used my voice for Gatchaman, then I definitely wouldn't be where I am today.

My kids liked the first Yamato best. They liked the way Matsumoto-sensei added his touch to the "distorted" quality of the artwork. By the time Farewell came along, the artwork became more systematic, and that wasn't so amusing.

The first Yamato really focused on the mecha. I was surprised at how the ship shook when the main cannons fired. All that was drawn in great detail.

Matsumoto-sensei really loves his ships and warships---to the point that he actually goes to see them himself. He was able to capture the distortions caused in the field of vision as well. From the second Yamato, these attributes were ignored, and it was more like your typical love story. And when Gatchaman 2 came out, it was like, "Ok, we're gonna do another Yamato 2 now!"

You played the role of Hajime Saito [Sergeant Knox] in Farewell?

I'm sure it was a complimentary role, just to boost the marketing. "This time Sasaki's gonna be a voice actor in the movie..." and so on. I'm sure they picked me because I was constantly working at Tohoku Shinsha Studio. But I just couldn't get into the Saito role because it wasn't my character type.


You've played a lot of roles, like Joe of Gatchaman, Starbuck of Battlestar Galactica, and the cool hero, Michael Knight, of Knight Rider. Even macho men like Stallone. Considering that, the Saito role just wasn't you, was it? It seemed like you forced your voice to be deeper.

Yeah, I was pushing it (laughs). I could get the feel for most of the characters I played, but not Saito. That's why I forced it.

And Saito dies.

Yeah. We had discussed that he would get shot to death. After all, it's the battle of Japan's samurai spirit.

Everybody dies at the end of Farewell. I heard Matsumoto-sensei didn't participate in the recording of those scenes because of this. But new versions of Yamato kept coming out, and it seemed you kept participating in those events.

I had little say in the matter. There were tremendous expectations that it would always be better than the previous production, and we had to participate in the promotion, especially since I sang the main themes.

I really liked the theme for The New Voyage.

It's one of my favorites, too. That's why I always sang it during the promotional campaigns.

You did both singing and voice-acting. Have you ever thought of just doing one or the other?

When I'm doing voice-acting, I get to learn from the foreign actors, especially if they're good at their profession. It's difficult for songs, as I have to listen to the arrangements and find the right way to sing based upon the lyrics. Basically, it's a totally different profession.

I've probably sung too much over the years. And the times have changed along with the type of songs, so I feel that my style is no longer in fashion.

Also when Columbia Records first released the Gatchaman album, you did the lyrics and compositions. According to the liner notes, it says that during the songs "Let's Walk Down This Street" and "Farewell, My Friend" you were in tears of passion.

I can't go around with tears flowing in my profession! (Laughs) I'm sure they exaggerate a bit when writing the liner notes. I liked the Joe and Ken characters, so I wrote those two songs. I still like those songs.

Did you do anime voice-acting first, then move to dubbing foreign shows?

No, actually I started out dubbing foreign shows, as I wasn't involved in much anime at the time.

So was Knight Rider your longest regular series?

Yes. I met the guy who plays Knight Rider, David Hasselhoff, at the Amsterdam airport, when I was flying to Italy. My wife said, "It's him!" He was talking on the phone. When he finished, I introduced myself and said I did the Japanese voice for the show. And he said, "Oh really?" That guy was so big! Then he asked me, "Are you doing Baywatch, too?" And I said no. We had some small talk like that.

Finally, I'd like to ask you to share any special memories you have of the Yamato boom years, since I'm sure you traveled all over Japan as a result.

Hmm...it must have been the promotion we had in the Marui building in Hokkaido. There were so many people. I must have signed several hundred autographs that time. Actually, Yamato's popularity began in Hokkaido [site of the first TV rerun]. Then I started going on the concert tours. During that time, I recall that I did a lot of drinking.

With the Producer?

He tended to be a loner...he never joined us...sorry for ending on a dark note...(grins)
