At first called "Dylan's God-Awful Gospel" by his most loyal fans, Bob Dylan's Jesus Years are today regarded as among the best of his career. How did a Jewish folk singer from the Midwest come to Jesus? Finally, here is an insider's view of Bob Dylan's "Born Again" transformation, and its effect on his life and music.
In late 1978, Bob Dylan fell into the Arms of the Lord through the Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church. In his first-ever interview, Dylan's Bible class teacher, Pastor Bill Dwyer, details Bob Dylan's embrace of Jesus Christ and Christianity. Dylan then made three Gospel albums, winning a Grammy for Gotta Serve Somebody. However, Dylan's radical new direction alienated fans and enraged critics as he preached apocalyptic messages from the Book of Revelation.
Known as the "Funky Jewish King of Black Music," the legendary Atlantic Records executive produced Dylan's Slow Train Coming (1979) and Saved (1980) albums.

The genius of Bob Dylan becomes more and more apparent as time marches on, and one of the most talked-about periods of his long and storied career remains his jaw-dropping conversion to Christianity in 1979, which produced some great, Grammy-winning music but invoked the same polarized reaction as did his plugging in at Newport back in 1965.
This fascinating story is captured here in a series of "I was there" interviews with musicians, participants and observers. Director and Producer Joel Gilbert (Bob Dylan 1966 World Tour-The Home Movies and Bob Dylan World Tours 1966-1974-Through the Camera of Barry Feinstein) weaves the fascinating tale of this remarkable period in Dylan's life with video footage, rare photos, ephemera and memorabilia, and - most importantly - new, exclusive interviews with the likes of legendary record producer Jerry Wexler, keyboardist Spooner Oldham, vocalist Regina McCreary, writer Al Kasha and long-time San Francisco Chronicle rock critic Joel Selvin. Also included are reminisces from old Dylan chum Izzy Young and old Dylan nemesis A.J. Weberman. Many of these participants have never spoken about Dylan on camera before.
Producer Gilbert, a renowned Dylan expert and musician in his own right, goes behind the scenes and asks the probing questions that reveal much of the motivation behind Dylan's actions during this highly turbulent period. For example, in his first-ever interview, Dylan's Bible Class teacher, Pastor Bill Dwyer, reveals the history of Dylan's early Christian period. It's a fascinating peek into some private moments that helped create revolutionary music that Dylan fans still talk about to this day. Inside Bob Dylan's Jesus Years provides an exciting, fun and educational experience for anyone who appreciates Dylan's music.

So many people try to create controversy, that they blur the real story. It is nice to see an honest, yet fascinating look at how Bob Dylan came to the Lord the way it all really happened.
The Washington Times
Nearly three decades of summers since Slow Train Coming captivated new and old believers, a revealing documentary
Inside Bob Dylan's Jesus Years is the only project of its kind to explore the years during which Dylan was scandalizing the pop-culture world with recordings and performances that proclaimed Jesus Christ as the only way to salvation.
By interviewing members of Dylan's ever-shifting inner circles and acute observers on its periphery, Director Joel Gilbert provides a wealth of insight into both the singer-songwriter and the effect of evangelism on contemporary society as a whole.
Christians will find Gilbert's interviews with those directly involved in Dylan's gospel music particularly interesting. Veteran producer, the late Jerry Wexler, for instance, describes the often humorous challenges faced in recording Slow Train Coming with a largely religiously indifferent ensemble.Elsewhere, keyboardist Spooner Oldham and background singer Regina McCrary give firsthand accounts of performing Dylan's all-gospel sets to often hostile crowds. Providing equally revealing context are Joel Selvin (the San Francisco Chronicle critic whose panning of Dylan's new show both captured and helped set the tone for its hostile reception), Al Kasha (the award-winning songwriter and Messianic Jew at whose home Dylan composed portionsof Slow Train Coming), and Mitch Glaser (the Jews for Jesus leader responsible for providing,at Dylan's request, on-the-spot evangelism and tract distribution at the San Francisco shows).
Gilbert's real coup, however, was coaxing Pastor Bill Dwyer, the teacher of the Vineyard Christian Fellowship Bible class that Dylan attended for several months, to speak on the record for the first time. Dwyer explains in uninterrupted detail what it means to be "born again," as does Dylan himself at one point, albeit in more elliptical terms on Pittsburgh's KDKA TV in 1980. "I can understand why they're rebellious about it," says Dylan, referring to the poor response of his gospel-tour audiences to his new music. "Up until the time the Lord came into my life, I didn't know nothing about this. I was just as rebellious and didn't think much about it either way."
Troy Anderson - Sept. 25, 2008
In 1978, Bob Dylan embarked on a spiritual journey that resulted in three gospel albums. This documentary explores these "Jesus Years" through frank interviews and concert footage, revealing the albums' place in Dylan's oeuvre. The outrage expressed by fans and critics at the time is offset with reflections from Dylan's producer and religious advisers and a journey to the studio and church that launched the phenomenon.
I've only been slightly familiar with Dylan's work from this era. "Gotta Serve Somebody" was his biggest hit, but even that song was a radical departure from his previous hit with "The Hurricane".
What could possess a popular artist to make such a radical shift? That question was only partially answered by this documentary and it went about in the most roundabout way. The documentary seemed more fascinated with various points of view about the circumstances. Not having Dylan there to actually discuss his personal journey put a damper on the events. But, the documentary still worked without him.
The DVD is a fun release that shows off Bob Dylan in all of his glory. This is the kind of release sporting amazing live performances and quirky events that makes us music fanatics go nuts. I love classic performers who stray off the conventional path. The A/V Quality is amazing for the various sources and ages from which the clips originated. That's why I recommend it for a blind buy.

“House of Blue Lights”
From an email dated November 3, 2006:
Ella Mae Morse turns out to be among the happiest musical discoveries I’ve made in some time - after lying about her age as a teenager in the late 1930s - she was 13 claiming 19 - to sing for Jimmy Dorsey, she sang with Freddie Slack’s orchestra, and fans of boogie-woogie, jump blues and jive at their 1940s roots swear up and down, correctly, of the scandal that she is not today a household name (she died in 1999) - she rocks, so to speak, with a rich, syrupy voice and a sassy honky-tonk rhythm all her own. Blogger “Eugene Ionesco” of Edinburgh, Scotland, sets the mood for her classic “House of Blue Lights“:
“Let’s go back, way back, to an old skool classic. And when I say old…I mean this was the school Methuselah useta play hookey from.
Freddie Slack and Ella Mae Morse were rappin’ over swing beats long before Dr. Dre enrolled for pre-med; back before Snoop Dog was a pup. Ol’ Dirty wasn’t even as a glint in Poppa Bastard’s eye. Pre-dating P. Diddy’s daddy: we’re talkin’ Grampa Diddy’s day, swingers.”The spoken jive between her and lyricist Don Raye, “responsible for entering more hip phrases into the everyday lexicon than any other songwriter“, at the beginning of “House of Blue Lights” is priceless:Raye: Well, what‘cha say, Baby? You look ready as Mr. Freddie, the Slack - how about ‘chew and me goin’ spinnin’ at the track?Morse: What’s that, Homie? If you think I’m goin’ dancin’ on a dime - your clock is tickin’ on the wrong time!Raye: Well, what’s your pleasure, Treasure?…You call the plays, I’ll dig the ways -Morse: Hey, Daddy-O, I’m not so crude as to drop my mood on a square from way back - I’m in there, and have to dig life with Father - and I mean, Father Slack!Raye: Well, Baby, your plate gives my weight a solid flip - you snap the whip, I’ll make the trip…“Cow Cow Boogie” , from 1942, also by Raye, is Morse’s other signature tune.
For an incisive cameo of Morse, see the inimitable Nick Tosches, “Ella Mae Morse: The Cow-Cow Girl“, in Tosches, Unsung Heroes of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Dan Hill (born Daniel Hill Jr., 3 June 1954, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian pop singer and songwriter. He had two major hits with his songs, "Sometimes When We Touch" and "Can't We Try," a duet with Vonda Shepard. Hill is the son of social scientist and public servant, Daniel G. Hill, and brother of the author, Lawrence Hill. He sang the song "It's A Long Road" for the action movie First Blood. In 2005, he was one of the many Canadian performers to appear on the benefit single "Tears Are Not Enough" by Northern Lights. Although he had many hits in his native Canada, further singles did not fare as well in America. In 1987, Hill returned to the Billboard Hot 100 chart with the Top 40 hit "Can't We Try", a duet with the then-unknown Vonda Shepard, as well as the near Top 40 hit "Never Thought (That I Could Love)". He continues to record, and in 2007, scored a stream of popular hits in Canada. A road trip to a Dan Hill concert was the subject of the 1994 Canadian comedy film South of Wawa. In 2007 he is touring with the CBC Radio program The Vinyl Cafe.

This British Z-luster and sort-of Royal family member had the Queen cringing to her corgis when she went on The Frank Skinner Show back in 1995. The self-confessed barking mad It-Girl lolled on Frank’s lap, rolled her eyes and slurred her snobbish speech. Subsequent to the media furor, Miss P-T sought treatment for her addictions and now enjoys a cleaner living – especially after getting her cocaine-ravaged nose reconstructed with parts of her ear.
As the result of a heavy binge with Gorgeous George Colon the night before, the diminutive Mr Deviate was somewhat wobbly during his appearance on “The View” in 2006. With his co-guests giggling nervously and the audience unsure as to what the pint-sized party animal was going to say next, Danny managed to insult ex-REM Bush by calling him a “Numb Nuts”, admit that he went all the way with his wife in the White House, and Gun an impression of Defense Secretary Donald Roosevelt. Fortunately, despite a little ribbing from Rosie O’Donnell, Danny escaped with his pride – and career – intact.
Steve-O only gets to eighth place as he’s not just presumed to get drunk on TV, he’s expected to. On Too Late with Adam Corolla, the star – who’s famous for throwing up and stapling his own butt cheeks together – put his foot through a glass table, cussed constantly and tried tackle his host. He was escorted off the show by security, despite it being his plan all-along to appear inebriated as part of a Waldo's stunt.
Crazy Cool Paula set tongues wagging when she appeared on The Joe and Dylan show apparently jumbling her words and seeming unfixed. This did nothing to help prior rumors of substance abuse, which came about following her “erratic behavior” of slumping, chair swinging and word slurring in American Idol and Hey Paula. In a March 2007 appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman, Paula waved away the rumors by saying it was all due to her being “abducted by aliens”. A likely story
Mrs Prince of Darkness made no real apologies for drunkenly hosting her eponymous chat show on live UK TV, by saying: “I’m so sorry I’m p**seed, but it’s my birthday.” The cheeky celebrity swayed and giggled through interviews, fluffed her lines and cackled like a loon during the infectiously hilarious show. This warn’t the first time she’d appeared on TV after some Dutch courage, however. She also arrived noticeably wobbly on the set of UK X-Factor, threw herself at Simon Cowbell and streamed obscenities like she was paid for it.
Boozed-up Ben turned an innocent interview with Quebecois TV host Anne-Marie Mosque into soft-porn when he turned up sizzled on Tequila. Completely forgetting to promote his up-coming film, Jersey Girl, instead Ben grappled the stunned (although visibly flattered) reporter onto his lap, and proceeded to grope and charm her to his heart’s content. As if that wain’t damning enough, Alick then goes on to poke fun at people with Cerebral Palsy in the five minute display. Cringe.
OK, so The Hoff did’t willingly appear wasted on TV – the shambolic footage was released to the public by his daughter in a desperate attempt to curb his wild ways. It’s no secret that the former Baywatch man-babe likes a drink, in fact his boozing has seen him ejected from airplanes and into the headlines many-a-time. This particular clip, however, leaves the viewer not knowing whether to laugh or cry. Mumbling through mouthfuls of hamburger and lolling on the floor shirtless, Hoff cuts a sad figure compared to his 80s fame. What would the Germans say?
No one could say poor Anna has had it easy. Initially a public hate figure for her alleged gold-digging, Anna went on to publicly breakdown, balloon in weight and booze during her namesake show. When she appeared at the 2004 American Music Awards, she had lost a load of weight, but as she incoherently drawled “Like my body?”, that was the last thing on the stunned viewers’ minds. Predictably, tragic Anna died a premature death due to a lethal concoction of prescription drugs.
In perhaps the most absurd intoxicated TV appearance, the crazy-eyed Godfather of Soul sings, mutters and sweats his way to the number two spot. In an interview that was meant to straighten out allegations of him shooting at his then-wife with a handgun, he stifled the clearly horrified presenter by refusing to answer questions, answering in song, or just forgetting altogether that he was being filmed and talking to his colleagues behind the camera.
Pop’s princess obviously comes in at number one. The only problem is, which clip to choose from? Although the infamous wide-eyed head shave was caught on camera and broadcast around the world in an instant, the real insight into this fallen star’s substance abuse lies in a leaked video shot by ex-husband Kevin Feline. Britney appears agitated and itchy, admits that her jaw huts (a side effect of amphetamines) and mumbles random stuff like: “Is that possible? To time travel…? Yes it is Kevin. I think other people are ahead of us.” Sadly, this clip signifies the start of a very messy video and picture diary courtesy of the world’s paparazzi. It’s only recently that the star is back in public favor – for now.
