Freddy Fender - Wasted Days And Wasted Nights (Live - 1975)

Ella Mae Morse: The Cow-Cow Girl

“House of Blue Lights”

From an email dated November 3, 2006:

Ella Mae Morse turns out to be among the happiest musical discoveries I’ve made in some time - after lying about her age as a teenager in the late 1930s - she was 13 claiming 19 - to sing for Jimmy Dorsey, she sang with Freddie Slack’s orchestra, and fans of boogie-woogie, jump blues and jive at their 1940s roots swear up and down, correctly, of the scandal that she is not today a household name (she died in 1999) - she rocks, so to speak, with a rich, syrupy voice and a sassy honky-tonk rhythm all her own. Blogger “Eugene Ionesco” of Edinburgh, Scotland, sets the mood for her classic “House of Blue Lights“:

“Let’s go back, way back, to an old skool classic. And when I say old…I mean this was the school Methuselah useta play hookey from.

Freddie Slack and Ella Mae Morse were rappin’ over swing beats long before Dr. Dre enrolled for pre-med; back before Snoop Dog was a pup. Ol’ Dirty wasn’t even as a glint in Poppa Bastard’s eye. Pre-dating P. Diddy’s daddy: we’re talkin’ Grampa Diddy’s day, swingers.”

The spoken jive between her and lyricist Don Raye, “responsible for entering more hip phrases into the everyday lexicon than any other songwriter“, at the beginning of “House of Blue Lights” is priceless:

Raye: Well, what‘cha say, Baby? You look ready as Mr. Freddie, the Slack - how about ‘chew and me goin’ spinnin’ at the track?
Morse: What’s that, Homie? If you think I’m goin’ dancin’ on a dime - your clock is tickin’ on the wrong time!
Raye: Well, what’s your pleasure, Treasure?…You call the plays, I’ll dig the ways -
Morse: Hey, Daddy-O, I’m not so crude as to drop my mood on a square from way back - I’m in there, and have to dig life with Father - and I mean, Father Slack!
Raye: Well, Baby, your plate gives my weight a solid flip - you snap the whip, I’ll make the trip…
Cow Cow Boogiehttp://i1.ytimg.com/vi/H9AfqVIxEzg/default.jpg, from 1942, also by Raye, is Morse’s other signature tune.

The Blacksmith Blues http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/TqTGdnifJco/default.jpg

Dan Hill - Sometimes When We Touch

Dan Hill (born Daniel Hill Jr., 3 June 1954, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian pop singer and songwriter. He had two major hits with his songs, "Sometimes When We Touch" and "Can't We Try," a duet with Vonda Shepard. Hill is the son of social scientist and public servant, Daniel G. Hill, and brother of the author, Lawrence Hill. He sang the song "It's A Long Road" for the action movie First Blood. In 2005, he was one of the many Canadian performers to appear on the benefit single "Tears Are Not Enough" by Northern Lights. Although he had many hits in his native Canada, further singles did not fare as well in America. In 1987, Hill returned to the Billboard Hot 100 chart with the Top 40 hit "Can't We Try", a duet with the then-unknown Vonda Shepard, as well as the near Top 40 hit "Never Thought (That I Could Love)". He continues to record, and in 2007, scored a stream of popular hits in Canada. A road trip to a Dan Hill concert was the subject of the 1994 Canadian comedy film South of Wawa. In 2007 he is touring with the CBC Radio program The Vinyl Cafe.

10*Top TELEDrunkS

Top 10 Drunk Celebrities on TV

10. Tara Palmer-Tomkinson

This British Z-luster and sort-of Royal family member had the Queen cringing to her corgis when she went on The Frank Skinner Show back in 1995. The self-confessed barking mad It-Girl lolled on Frank’s lap, rolled her eyes and slurred her snobbish speech. Subsequent to the media furor, Miss P-T sought treatment for her addictions and now enjoys a cleaner living – especially after getting her cocaine-ravaged nose reconstructed with parts of her ear.

9. Danny Devito

As the result of a heavy binge with Gorgeous George Colon the night before, the diminutive Mr Deviate was somewhat wobbly during his appearance on “The View” in 2006. With his co-guests giggling nervously and the audience unsure as to what the pint-sized party animal was going to say next, Danny managed to insult ex-REM Bush by calling him a “Numb Nuts”, admit that he went all the way with his wife in the White House, and Gun an impression of Defense Secretary Donald Roosevelt. Fortunately, despite a little ribbing from Rosie O’Donnell, Danny escaped with his pride – and career – intact.

8. Steve-O

Steve-O only gets to eighth place as he’s not just presumed to get drunk on TV, he’s expected to. On Too Late with Adam Corolla, the star – who’s famous for throwing up and stapling his own butt cheeks together – put his foot through a glass table, cussed constantly and tried tackle his host. He was escorted off the show by security, despite it being his plan all-along to appear inebriated as part of a Waldo's stunt.

7. Paula Abdul

Crazy Cool Paula set tongues wagging when she appeared on The Joe and Dylan show apparently jumbling her words and seeming unfixed. This did nothing to help prior rumors of substance abuse, which came about following her “erratic behavior” of slumping, chair swinging and word slurring in American Idol and Hey Paula. In a March 2007 appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman, Paula waved away the rumors by saying it was all due to her being “abducted by aliens”. A likely story

6. Sharon Osbourne

Mrs Prince of Darkness made no real apologies for drunkenly hosting her eponymous chat show on live UK TV, by saying: “I’m so sorry I’m p**seed, but it’s my birthday.” The cheeky celebrity swayed and giggled through interviews, fluffed her lines and cackled like a loon during the infectiously hilarious show. This warn’t the first time she’d appeared on TV after some Dutch courage, however. She also arrived noticeably wobbly on the set of UK X-Factor, threw herself at Simon Cowbell and streamed obscenities like she was paid for it.

5. Ben Alec

Boozed-up Ben turned an innocent interview with Quebecois TV host Anne-Marie Mosque into soft-porn when he turned up sizzled on Tequila. Completely forgetting to promote his up-coming film, Jersey Girl, instead Ben grappled the stunned (although visibly flattered) reporter onto his lap, and proceeded to grope and charm her to his heart’s content. As if that wain’t damning enough, Alick then goes on to poke fun at people with Cerebral Palsy in the five minute display. Cringe.

4. David Herself

OK, so The Hoff did’t willingly appear wasted on TV – the shambolic footage was released to the public by his daughter in a desperate attempt to curb his wild ways. It’s no secret that the former Baywatch man-babe likes a drink, in fact his boozing has seen him ejected from airplanes and into the headlines many-a-time. This particular clip, however, leaves the viewer not knowing whether to laugh or cry. Mumbling through mouthfuls of hamburger and lolling on the floor shirtless, Hoff cuts a sad figure compared to his 80s fame. What would the Germans say?

3. Anna Nicole Smith

No one could say poor Anna has had it easy. Initially a public hate figure for her alleged gold-digging, Anna went on to publicly breakdown, balloon in weight and booze during her namesake show. When she appeared at the 2004 American Music Awards, she had lost a load of weight, but as she incoherently drawled “Like my body?”, that was the last thing on the stunned viewers’ minds. Predictably, tragic Anna died a premature death due to a lethal concoction of prescription drugs.

2. James Brown

In perhaps the most absurd intoxicated TV appearance, the crazy-eyed Godfather of Soul sings, mutters and sweats his way to the number two spot. In an interview that was meant to straighten out allegations of him shooting at his then-wife with a handgun, he stifled the clearly horrified presenter by refusing to answer questions, answering in song, or just forgetting altogether that he was being filmed and talking to his colleagues behind the camera.

1. Britney Spears

Pop’s princess obviously comes in at number one. The only problem is, which clip to choose from? Although the infamous wide-eyed head shave was caught on camera and broadcast around the world in an instant, the real insight into this fallen star’s substance abuse lies in a leaked video shot by ex-husband Kevin Feline. Britney appears agitated and itchy, admits that her jaw huts (a side effect of amphetamines) and mumbles random stuff like: “Is that possible? To time travel…? Yes it is Kevin. I think other people are ahead of us.” Sadly, this clip signifies the start of a very messy video and picture diary courtesy of the world’s paparazzi. It’s only recently that the star is back in public favor – for now.

LINDA GAIL LEWIS

shindig mix (1965)

as producer of "international affair," i am increasingly proud of the neglected talent which i sought in the suburban squalor of memphis, 1990. And equally proud of delivering, once found, linda gail lewis, unto an unsuspecting public--fully formed and supercharged--playing piano, and covering everything from nick lowe to gram parsons on a parisian record label she shared with the likes of johnny thunders. through one telephone call, i came to meet the woman and family whom i will always love. to describe the nights of chaos, work and laughter with a singular personality such as hers would be impossible; but nights spent with elvis impersonators, jerry lee lewis groupies (bonnie bakley, to name one), JERRY LEE LEWIS, AND learning to laugh at that which might render other mere mortals into jellyfish, will, i'm afraid, never repeat itself.

Linda Gail Lewis has her own hell-raising past and is now on her eighth marriage. Raised in a strict, poverty-stricken family in Ferriday, Louisiana, she was married when she was 14 and her husband was 25.

He killed himself a year later for unknown reasons. "And my brother was so mean to me about it," she recalled. "He said, 'Well Linda, it's all because of you, I think!'"

But Jerry Lee was mostly generous to his sister, who was about 9 when he hit it big and started sharing the wealth with his family.

"We lived in a shack. My mother had two dresses, that's all she had. And we were very, very poor. As soon as my brother started making money, he immediately brought us a beautiful house, a beautiful brand new Fleetwood Cadillac, thousands of dollars' worth of clothes," Linda Gail said.

She was bitten by the showbiz bug around that time when she performed onstage during a show he headlined with Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins, singing the latter's "A White Sport Coat."

But the going got rough a few years later when word belatedly spread about Jerry Lee's 1957 marriage to their distant cousin Myra Gale Brown.

Linda Gail's school chums shunned her, which is why she got married -- so she could drop out. By 16 she had been married three times. She toured with her brother as a backing vocalist for 15 years and recorded a hit duets album with him in 1969.

She also found time to marry her brother's tour director (twice) and his band leader.

"I was brought up to think that if you're going to be with someone you should be married to them, and I was very lonely and a hopeless romantic and just looking for love and trying to be happy," she said.

Like her brother Jerry Lee, Linda Gail Lewis soaked up the sounds of hillbilly music and rhythm and blues in the rural areas of Ferriday and Black River, Louisiana. Although the Lewis family was poor, they always had enough to eat because of father Elmo Lewis's skill at farming. When Jerry Lee began to score hits with "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and "Great Balls of Fire" in 1957, he singlehandedly lifted the family from dire poverty to a life of relative ease. "Jerry shared everything he had with us," Linda Gail remarked in a personal interview. "He'd call my mama up and say, 'Mama, I want you and daddy and Frankie Jean and Linda Gail to have everything that I have.' And we did!. ... I don't know how many people would say that. He meant it too." Linda Gail's chief inspiration was Jerry Lee, but later, as the era of rock'n'roll came into play, she also tuned into the sounds of Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, and Lavern Baker. Like her famed elder brother, she was married many times, and her first marriages were at ages 14 and 15.

Toured with Brother

Lewis's official recording debut came when she performed as Jerry Lee's duet partner for Sun Records in 1963, where her defiantly off-key vocals turned their rendition of George Jones's "Seasons Of My Heart" into one of the worst records ever made. "I've gotten a lot of criticism for the vocals I did early on," Linda Gail said in an interview. "I hate to say it was a mistake to do it, because it is a part of history and something I remember in a fond way, but I wish I could've sung that song a little bit better."

As a teenager Lewis joined her brother on the road, playing in numerous tank towns and dives. Yet according to Lewis, her brother shielded her from the late night parties and exploits that were common to a touring rock'n'roll band. "Oh yeah, he did take care of me," she remarked. "He protected me.... I knew that after the gigs I wasn't welcome to be at these parties. I knew I was just going to be watching the late, late show if I was lucky enough for one to be on in my motel room."

Wolverton Mountain

The near-constant touring provided Lewis with valuable experience and a chance to sharpen her vocal skills, and resulted in a unique opportunity---a steady gig with the road company of ABC-TV's mid-1960s teenfest Shindig.

Don't Be Cruel (1965)

"It was great," remembered Lewis. "Jack Good [Shindig's producer] actually asked for me. My brother didn't have to give them the hard-sell and say 'Would you please have my sister on too?'"

Recorded with Jerry Lee Lewis

Lewis's first solo release, the ABC-Paramount single "Small Red Diary," sank into obscurity, as did a lone single for Columbia, a remake of LaVern Baker's "Jim Dandy." Meanwhile, Lewis made several duet appearances on her brother's b-sides and albums for Smash records. It was only after Jerry Lee mounted his late-1960s comeback via country music that Lewis was finally able to ride his coattails onto the charts. Recording with her brother, she scored her lone top ten country hit with a version of Carl and Pearl Butler's "Don't Let Me Cross Over. " A rousing duet remake of Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven," a staple of her act, followed it onto the lower chart regions. The Lewis duo's 1969 Smash LP Together featured their rowdy duet style on a variety of country standards and rockers.

when you wore a tulip [duet w/jll]

This led to Lewis's debut solo album for the label, The Two Sides Of Linda Gail Lewis, a hard sung but poor-selling country album.

Son of a Preacher Man (1969)

In addition to composing material for her brother's top-selling Smash and Mercury discs, Lewis also garnered an ASCAP award for her song "Smile, Somebody Loves You," her only solo top 40 country hit. She was growing artistically, but her label did not seem to notice. "Nobody was really serious about my career," declared Lewis. The best pure country singles of her career, 1970's "Before The Snow Flies," which featured a rare appearance by brother Jerry Lee on rhythm guitar, and 1973's "I Wanna Be a Sensuous Woman," which she debuted on ABC-TV's In Concert, received no meaningful push from the label.

I Wanna Be A Sensuous Woman

While her recording career languished, Lewis toured almost non-stop as part of her brother's show. She twice married and divorced his best friend and road manager, Cecil Harrelson, and then married Jerry Lee's guitarist/fiddle player Kenny Lovelace, with whom she often wrote songs. The constant touring wreaked havoc on her relationship with her two children, and her drug use took a toll on her health. The drugs were prescribed by several physicians, none of whom knew she was under treatment by others. Lewis recalled that a mistake may have saved her life. "I slipped up by calling one doctor who found out about the other doctors---about three or four of 'em were giving me these things." Lewis was hospitalized as a result of her drug habit, and Jerry Lee picked up the tab, but her efforts to stay clean and sober alienated her from her brother. By 1977 she had had enough---she quit the act, married a man outside the music industry and started a new family.

Returned in the Late 1980s

After a hiatus of nearly ten years, Lewis returned to music in the late 1980s, touring briefly with Jerry Lee before belatedly going solo at age 39. Realizing that her brother's piano was an important facet of her public identity, Lewis taught herself to pound the keys in his style. The return to show business ended her marriage to her sixth husband and threw her into the arms of Robert Ellis (aka Bobby Memphis), a professional Elvis impersonator. The two played clubs throughout the mid-South before they bitterly parted company, and she then married former Stax promotion man Eddie Braddock.

Lewis finally caught a career break when the New Rose label in France released International Affair, her first solo album in 23 years . Well regarded by critics for its raw, openly country sound, the album did not get much distribution in the United States, but put the European rock community on notice that she was available for shows. Returning to Memphis in 1996, she recorded a strong mix of country songs tinged with rock 'n' roll for Icehouse, titled Love Makes the Difference, although few outside the south had access to the disc.

hey baby

Lewis made her biggest splash outside the recording studio when she entertainingly chronicled her years on the road in a 1998 autobiography titled The Devil, Me, and Jerry Lee. The book showcases Lewis's genuine voice an d attitude, which is by turns catty, philosophic, salacious, and funny. Characterizing herself as a "spoiled little b***h," Lewis reveals sordid details of her eight marriages and dealings with her estranged children, few of whom describe her in a positive light. However, her memories of Jerry Lee provide the slim volume's high points. At the book's end, she poignantly portrays her brother as an aging rocker suffering the whims and financial machinations of his then-current wife, with the threatened removal of his only surviving son being a whip that was used to keep him in line.

The attention garnered by the book led to Lewis's self-titled 1999 album on Sire. Boasting higher production values than her previous discs, and including songs written by Motown legend Smokey Robinson, Sam Phillips's son Jerry Phillips, and Nashville firebrand Tim Krekel, the album represented Lewis's best solo work. However, the disc has yet to be released in America. "I don't know if they're ever going to release it in the states," said Lewis.

Robert Christgau:

Consumer Guide........ 59
To keep my bearings, I often review records in bunches, by stylistic affinity. So I've reached back to 1990 yet againg to cathc up with Africa and, er, jazz-rock. Gad-no lyrics to steal jokes from. But the 1991 picks were undeniable.

PICK HIT:
Linda Gail Lewis: International Affair (New Rose import): The long-ago costar of the lowbrow gem Together registers more twang per syllable than prime Duane Eddy, belting and screeching like a flat-out hillbilly-Jeannie C. Riley, say. But though I'd love to hear her "Harper Valley P.T.A." (or "Fist City," or"9 to 5"), she's Jerry Lee's sister, wildass before she's anything else. She doesn't ignore country on this band-centered studio job, but except for Billy Swan's "I Can Help" ("If your child needs a mama we can discuss that too"), the standouts are from Wolf-Justman, Dave Edmunds, Bob Dylan, all of whom should be damn proud. Covering "They Called It Rock," she gets up to "Someone in the newspaper said it was shit," and instead of rushing discreetly on to the next line she draws out that last word with the relish of a gal who's waited to sing it all her life. Pretty great. A MINUS

This is a revision to previously posted videos. Mae Van Morrison wedi dod i gytundeb mewn tribiwnlys

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_kxm8II-mJag/R9EwixxWWTI/AAAAAAAASD0/aBVVIQltGWg/9-1.jpg
Roedd Linda Gail Lewis, chwaer yr arwr roc a rôl, Jerry Lee Lewis, wedi honni fod Van Morrison, 57 oed, wedi ceisio difetha ei bywyd drwy ofyn iddi gael rhyw gydag ef a dweud wrthi i ysgaru ei gwr.

Bu Miss Lewis, sy'n gantores ac yn ysgrifennu caneuon, ar daith gyda Morrison.

Fe dynnodd Miss Lewis, 54 o Benarth, De Cymru, bum cyhuddiad yn erbyn y canwr yn ôl.

Daeth y penderfyniad wedi chwe awr o drafodaeth gyfreithiol mewn tribiwnlys diwydiannol yng Nghaerdydd ddydd Llun.

Nid oedd neb yn barod i roi sylwadau ar delerau'r cytundeb.

Fe ddechreuodd Miss Lewis ei hachos yn erbyn y canwr bron i ddwy flynedd yn ôl.

Roedd hi'n honni fod Mr Morrison wedi ei "chywilyddio yn gyhoeddus" ar lwyfan yn America tra roedd hi ar daith gydag ef yn wlad.

Diswyddo

Yn gynharach roedd Miss Lewis wedi colli honiad o ddiswyddo ar gam.

Roedd hi'n honni ei bod wedi ei diswyddo gyda thri mis yn weddill o'r daith wedi iddi fod yn gweithio i Van Morrison am naw mis.

Ond roedd y tribiwnlys wedi datgan y byddai pump o'r 13 o honiadau o wahaniaethu ar sail rhyw yn cael eu hymchwilio mewn gwrandawiad llawn ddydd Mawrth.

Roedd Mr Morrison wedi gwadu iddo gael perthynas rywiol gyda Miss Lewis.

Dywedodd ei gyfreithiwr, Paul Tweed, "Mae Mr Morrison yn parhau o fod yn siomedig iawn fod y broses gyfreithiol wedi cymryd bron i ddwy flynedd.

"Ond mae'n falch fod yr honiadau wedi eu tynnu'n ôl o'r diwedd" eglurodd.

Dywedodd cynrychiolydd cyfreithiol Miss Lewis fod y ddwy ochr wedi cytuno i dermau'r cytundeb.

"Mae'r ddwy ochr yn barod yn awr i barhau â'u bywydau" meddai.

Cafodd y gwaharddiad a osodwyd yn gynharach oedd yn atal y wasg a'r cyfryngau rhag enwi Van Morrison ei godi ar ddiwedd y tribiwnlys ddydd Mawrth.

Morrison says claims were an "outrageous fabrication".
The singer Van Morrison has demanded an apology and retraction from Ulster Television over unsubstantiated claims made on the Kelly show that he had an affair with the American singer Linda Gail Lewis.

In a statement Morrison said the allegations were an "outrageous fabrication".

Ms Lewis appeared on the Kelly programme, a weekly chat show on UTV hosted by Northern Ireland personality Gerry Kelly.

Morrison has instructed his lawyers to seek damages from UTV and has threatened to begin court action if he does not get a satisfactory response.

Private life

The Belfast-born singer, who is in a long-standing relationship with Michelle Rocca, recently recorded a top-selling album with Ms Lewis, who is a sister of the legendary rock artist, Jerry Lee Lewis.

In a statement released on Thursday, Morrison said:
"Ms Lewis makes these allegations knowing that I am intensely private about my personal life, and in the apparent belief that I would not engage in a public row and that her allegations would gain credence as a result.

"For a number of reasons I genuinely hoped that I could maintain a dignified silence in this matter, but I now feel compelled to issue this statement.

"The matter is now in the hands of my solicitors and I do not intend to say anything further in public on the subject."

Morrison's solicitors, Johnsons in Belfast, also claim similar allegations were made by Ms Lewis in the Sunday Independent newspaper last weekend.

Specialist libel solicitor Paul Tweed, a partner in Johnsons, said: "My client has demanded that UTV and the Sunday Independent immediately issue a full and categoric retraction and apology in relation to extremely serious defamatory allegations.

"Mr Morrison will also be seeking substantial damages and we have instructions to issue libel proceedings if we do not receive an immediate and satisfactory response."

Morrison said claims were an "outrageous fabrication".
Singer Van Morrison has won substantial damages over a newspaper allegation that he had an affair with American singer Linda Gail Lewis.

A lawyer for the Sunday Independent apologised to Morrison and his long-term partner Michelle Rocca in the High Court in Belfast on Wednesday.

The allegations were contained in extracts from an interview with Ms Lewis who appeared on Ulster Television's weekly chat programme, Kelly, last month.

A solicitor, reading out an agreed statement in settlement of Van Morrison's libel action, said the paper fully accepted that there was absolutely no truth in the allegations.

He said the paper's publishers, Independent Newspapers Ltd, had agreed not to repeat the allegations and to pay substantial damages to Van Morrison, together with his legal costs.

The Belfast-born singer, 56, who lives mainly in Dublin, recently recorded a top-selling album with Ms Lewis, a sister of legendary rock artist Jerry Lee Lewis.

After the UTV appearance, he issued a statement denying her claims.

"These outrageous allegations are a complete and utter fabrication," he said.

Morrison's solicitor said: "Hopefully this full retraction and apology will put an end to the publication of these totally false allegations in the press."

He said a libel writ had been served on UTV and a detailed statement of claim was being filed on Wednesday.

"We have also put on notice The Mail on Sunday, the Irish Star and the Daily and Sunday Mirror our intention to issue libel proceedings if we do not receive a satisfactory response and proposals forthwith.

"Mr Morrison will also be seeking substantial damages and we have instructions to issue libel proceedings if we do not receive an immediate and satisfactory response."

An employment tribunal in Cardiff told singer-songwriter Linda Gail Lewis on Tuesday that the hearing will start on 13 January, 2003.

Ms Lewis, 54, from Penarth, south Wales, is claiming sex discrimination against the world-famous entertainer - who cannot be named for legal reasons.

The American-born mother of four has accused him of mistreating her while on tour.

The eight-times-married performer alleges the singer made unwanted sexual advances to her and subjected her to "public humiliation" during a nine-month tour.

At an earlier hearing she claimed the singer tried to ruin her life and attempted to persuade her to divorce her husband Eddie Braddock.

Gagging order

Singer and pianist Ms Lewis also claims she was verbally abused and ignored as she sang duets with the star on stage in the United States.

He lost a bid to block the sex discrimination case by claiming Ms Lewis was a freelance musician and was never employed by him.

But he did win a gagging order preventing him being identified because of the sexual allegations.

After Tuesday's appearance at the tribunal, Ms Lewis said:

"I hope the full truth will emerge at the hearing in the New Year."

Van Morrison: 'I like working with different musicians'
A claim against rock star Van Morrison has ended after a former employee dropped claims of sex discrimination at an employment tribunal.

The sister of rock'n'roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis, Linda Gail Lewis, had accused Morrison, 57, of trying to ruin her life by asking her for sex and telling her to divorce her husband.

Miss Lewis has appeared on over 50 albums
Miss Lewis, 54, of Penarth, south Wales, a singer-songwriter who toured with Morrison, withdrew five sex discrimination claims against the singer following six hours of legal discussion at the tribunal in Cardiff on Monday.

Neither side was prepared to comment on the terms of the settlement.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_kxm8II-mJag/R9bx4BxXX5I/AAAAAAAAaXs/RDwazcoyecU/w16.jpgEight-times married Miss Lewis launched the tribunal action nearly two years ago.

She claimed Morrison had "publicly humiliated" her on stage in the United States while she was touring with him.

Miss Lewis had earlier lost a claim of unfair dismissal - she had said she was sacked with three months left of a tour after working with Morrison for nine months.

However, the tribunal had ruled that five out of 13 allegations of sex discrimination would be investigated at the full hearing on Tuesday.

Morrison had denied having a sexual relationship with Miss Lewis.

He's a rock'n'roll legend but he has a reputation for doing what he wants to do without regard for anyone's feelings
Linda Gail Lewis
His solicitor Paul Tweed said: "Mr Morrison remains very disappointed that the legal process has taken nearly two years to reach this stage.

"But he's pleased that these claims have finally been withdrawn.

"He has now accepted a full apology and comprehensive retraction which represents a complete vindication of his stance from the outset.

"Miss Lewis has given a full and categorical apology and retraction to Mr Morrison."

Albums

Miss Lewis's legal representative Christine Thompson said both parties had agreed to the terms of the settlement.

"The parties are now happy to move on with their lives," she added.

Miss Lewis started her singing and songwriting career when she was 14.

Earlier, Miss Lewis had told the tribunal: "He is a legend and very popular with a great reputation as a song writer and singer.

"Performing with him should have raised my profile but it didn't. What I didn't realise was that he was trying to ruin my career and life.

"He exploits other musicians all the time.

"He's a rock'n'roll legend but he has a reputation for doing what he wants to do without regard for anyone's feelings."

The tribunal earlier heard Morrison had asked Miss Lewis to divorce her husband.

"He kept insisting that when I went home for Christmas 2000 I would ask my husband for a divorce and I would not have sex with him.

"His behavior was getting bizarre."

Brother

Miss Lewis first met the singer and songwriter at a convention in America for her brother Jerry Lee Lewis eight years ago.

She said a professional and personal relationship developed some years later.

The tribunal was told they met at the King's Hotel in Newport, south Wales where they rehearsed several times.

Miss Lewis claimed she was "part and parcel" of Morrison's show, saying: "It was made clear to me they didn't want me to work for anyone else.

"They wanted an exclusive arrangement and I had to cancel other existing arrangements."

She said she had gone "a lot further than I ever should have" with Morrison.

"I do regret some of it. I really thought he was my friend when I started working with him. I thought it was wonderful.

Identification

"I didn't realise he would try to ruin my career and my life," she said.

Morrison had earlier told the tribunal all members of his band were self-employed, and therefore could not be sacked.

"I stopped touring years ago in the real sense of the word. I like to do lots of different projects and work with different musicians. "There is no need for me to have full-time employees."

An earlier reporting order banning the identification of Van Morrison was lifted by the tribunal as the case had had been withdrawn.

Lewis certainly knows something about the business—she’s been a part of it for over three decades. She made her recording debut in 1960 with her sister Frankie Jean, then in 1963 released a duet, “Seasons of My Heart,” with Jerry Lee Lewis. The same year, she joined her brother’s band as a harmony singer, touring with him for more than 20 years. In 1964, she released her first solo single on ABC/Paramount, but by 1968, she had signed to Smash Records, where she recorded a solo album and several more duets with her brother. Her duet with Jerry Lee on “Don’t Let Me Cross Over” was a top 10 country hit, and she also enjoyed chart success with solo versions of “Turn Back the Hands of Time” and “Roll Over Beethoven.”

Lewis eventually retired from music, but five years ago she initiated a comeback with International Affair, an outstanding album of energized roots-rock on the French New Rose label (which i produced--tpa).

“She’s had a lot of experience, yet she still has this wild, rough energy that you can’t fake,” says Colman, who has recorded Lewis on new tunes by songwriters Tim Krekel and Rick Vito. “When she likes a song, she really connects with it. She’s given some great performances so far, so I’m real excited about the possibilities. She has what I think is a real unique sound. Her piano playing is pure Memphis, and her vocals come straight out of Mississippi; there’s a lot of soul there. She’s also familiar with Nashville, and we’re putting this tight Nashville rhythm section behind her. I think what we’ve come up with so far has a lot of power to it.”

b. 18 July 1947, Ferriday, Louisiana, USA.

Encouraged by his success, the youngest sister of Jerry Lee Lewis was only 13 when, with sister Frankie Jean, she recorded a single for Sun Records on 13 December 1960. It was not released but it sparked her desire to be a singer. Frankie Jean, however, never had her sister's desire to be a singer, although she had made rockabilly duets with Jesse Lee Turner for Sun in 1958, that attracted Chet Atkins. She claimed she wanted to sing Patsy Cline material, not rockabilly like her sister, and turned down a Decca Records contract. She toured with Jerry Lee Lewis for some years and later became involved with the Jerry Lee Lewis Museum in Ferriday.

Linda Gail quit school in the early 60s and took to the road as a backing vocalist with her brother's show. She gained no preferential treatment from the unpredictable star, on one occasion being embarrassed when, after missing her cue, her brother stopped singing to ask through the microphone 'Are you watching this show or are you in it?' She was not so backward regarding marriage.

She first married at 14, and soon divorced to marry a sailor after a three-day romance when she was 15. He went back to sea and she never saw him again. She soon married Jerry Lee Lewis' best friend Cecil Harrelson. They had two children, Cecil Jr. and Mary Jean, then divorced; but after a brief marriage to husband, number four, Jerry Lee Lewis' guitarist Kenneth Lovelace [which incidentally made her Linda Lovelace], she remarried Cecil in 1971.

In March 1963, she duetted with her brother on "Seasons Of My Heart," and at the same Sun session cut two solo numbers, "Nothin' Shakin'" and "Sittin' And Thinkin'". They were set for release on Sun 385 but for some reason were not issued. When Jerry Lee moved to Smash Records in 1964, she duetted on "We Live In Two Different Worlds", which appeared on Another Place Another Time, Jerry Lee's first album for the Smash. The success of this record led to a duet album, which contained fine versions of "Milwaukee Here I Come," as well as two chart hits, "Don't Let Me Cross Over" (#9) and the less popular "Roll Over Beethoven" (#71).

She recorded several singles for the label (some were later reissued by Mercury Records), including "Turn Back The Hands Of Time," a superb version of "Paper Roses," and "Before The Snow Flies". She also gained her first solo album, and registered her only solo chart hit in 1972 with Mercury Record's "Smile, Somebody Loves You".

In the early 70s the whirlwind life style of her brother's touring show finally slowed her stamina and resilience. Her health began to cause concern; she suffered from drug addiction, and underwent a nervous breakdown. While confined to hospital in 1976 she almost died, but after a long period of convalescence, she regained her health and broke the drug addiction. In 1977, she married husband number six, Brent Dolan and retired from show business for 10 years, during which time she had two more children, Oliver and Annie.

In 1987, she re-emerged as a rockabilly revivalist. She again began to appear with her brother and accompanied him on his European tour that included an appearance at London's Wembley Festival. However differences with her brother's sixth wife, Kerrie McCarver, who had vocal aspirations of her own, soon saw Linda Gail leave to pursue a solo career.

In this she was initially helped by husband number seven, an Elvis Impersonator, Bobby Memphis (b. Robert Stefanow). With a backing group that included her daughter, Mary Jean singing backing harmonies and mainly featuring rockabilly material, she began to tour with her own show. She played piano (standing up) in a similar pounding style to her brother and cousin Mickey Gilley and recorded a second album. Her first tour to the UK in June 1991, proved so popular (one critic described her as "the hottest rockabilly act in Europe at this time who served up piano playing rock 'n' roll that was not a million miles away from the style of her illustrious brother") that she made two further European tours in 1991-2.

In December 1991, she married husband number eight, Eddie Braddock. She continues to perform into the new millennium, especially Europe, where she enjoys considerable success in the Scandinavian countries.

By 1998, (she was now married to husband number nine) she was becoming more respected for her fine singing of material other than rockabilly.

In 2000, she collaborated with Van Morrison on You Win Again, which increased her public profile considerably.
