Is Fidel Castro dead? Is Fidel Castro dying? Is this time different? [i'm pretty sure fidel is dead]
Is Fidel Castro dead? Is Fidel Castro dying? Is this time different?
These are questions that have come up from time to time since July 2006 when Fidel Castro underwent surgery. If one reads between the lines, one might get the impression that Fidel Castro just might be dying because this time we are analyzing his words and those of his closest ally, Hugo Chavez.
Let’s review his latest Reflections and a comment today from Hugo Chavez stating that the world will never see Fidel in public again.
1. The last public photos of Fidel Castro were released on November 19, 2008 when he met with Chinese President Hu. We commented then that Fidel had looked terrible and even appeared to be holding back some drool. Those photos were a photo op for the world and all the preparation that would be justified could not even make Fidel look healthy.
I thought that the photo shown in our recent article about Chinese President Hu meeting with Fidel Castro seemed to show Fidel Castro looking differently… as in a blank expression on his face and a very different hair style. Also notice how tightly Fidel is holding on to Hu AND Fidel’s mouth is closed. Where is the fire? Where is his energy? Remember, these photos are right from BejingDaily.com.cn so these are the BEST propaganda photos that they could put out there… the BEST photos. I wonder what the worst ones look like.
So, I decided to go find photos of Fidel Castro from the recent past just to put all the photos in one place. Some people say that Fidel is dead and that one of his best body doubles is standing in for him. I think that’s a bit of a stretch but have a look at the photos and see if anything seems odd.
Fidel Castro taken from photo with Chinese President Hu on November 18, 2008. Notice how his hair is parted on the left.
Fidel Castro taken from photo with Russia’s Metropolitan Kirill on October 20, 2008 - Russian Orthodox Church. Notice how his hair is parted on the right or combed forward.
Fidel Castro taken from photo with meeting of Uruguay President June 19, 2008 - Reuters
Fidel Castro days after his surgery in August 2006 in recovery. Notice the heavy use of make up that covers his noticeable age spots present before and after surgery. Look at the deep wrinkles on either side of his nose and how they bow it. See the photo above of him with Uruguay President about two years later, the deep wrinkles are very flat and straight.
Undated photo of Fidel Castro but pre-August 2006 when he went into seclusion. I think this was from sometime in 2006 though, maybe a rally against Spain?
Here is a photo that I took in April 2004. This is definitely Castro. I sat and listened to a speech for three hours. A “short” speech. Notice that he does not have deep wrinkles on either side of his nose nor does he have deep wrinkles between his eyebrows. Compare this to the photo above where “he” has deep wrinkles on either side of his nose AND deep wrinkles between his eyebrows. I am no FBI expert but they look like two different people to me. Keep in mind these photos are no more than two years apart.
Just for the record, a photo of Fidel Castro from 1964So, I’m not forensic scientist or FBI specialist in facial features but I do find it odd that for Fidel’s entire life he has combed his hair back and the wrinkles are interesting. I would like to see some photos of his ears. I would think those are pretty hard to fake.
Anyway, who changes the way they fix their hair when they are 82? Here’s an old photo comparison article for the conspiracy fans out there.
So, if you have any other photo that you would like me to post, please use the email link at the bottom of this page. Be sure to include the source and date or just send a link to the photo and/or story.
2. Fidel’s last Reflection was dated December 15, 2008 referring to a December 10 BBC article and could have been written by an assistant with direction by Fidel.
3. It is my belief that December 10, 2008 was Fidel Castro’s last real Reflection. It was a short Reflection of only 129 words after he received and award from CARICOM. Now we are over one full month since this last real time Reflection by Fidel. From what I can see from his list of Reflections, he has never gone for a month without writing. We may see another Reflection come out shortly but if it is “directed by” or “evergreen” in nature, I think it can be discounted since it most likely would have been written at some previous date in the past. Look through his list and separate the directed or evergreen Reflections from the real Reflections and you can see how infrequent his real Reflections have been for the past couple months. Lastly to this point, no other Reflection that we could find comes close to being as short as 129 words.
4. On December 31, 2008, the eve of the 50th anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel could only write “With the 50th anniversary of the triumph just a few hours away, I congratulate our heroic people.” That’s it. Well known journalist and Cuba expert Tracey Eaton commented on the brevity of the wording especially coming from the man that holds the record for the longest speech at the UN (4 hours and 29 minutes) and speaking even longer than that in 1986 for 7 hours and 10 minutes. Fidel Castro has never made short speeches or wrote short Reflections.
5. Today Hugo Chavez said “That Fidel in his uniform who walked the streets and towns late at night, hugging the people, won’t return” in a radio speech today and that this image will have to “remain in memories”. He also said “Fidel will live forever, beyond the physical life”. These words sound to me as though he is preparing the word for a post-Fidel Castro Cuba.
END
I heard somewhere that people judge us by the words we use. Can we judge Fidel by the (lack of) words he uses?
Is Fidel Castro dead? Is Fidel Castro dying? Is this time different?
Popout
Maybe this is Fidel Castro’s last wish?

Rita Chao: Butterfly [Singapore]
RITA CHAO, a very popular recording star from Singapore in the 60's and 70's, released both Mandarin and English records in Singapore and Malaysia. She also gained fans in Japan.
Ling Ying to her Mandarin-speaking fans, Rita enjoyed the accompaniment of The Quests, EMI Singapore's top band in the 60's, and together they recorded several hits for Rita.
Her fans still remember Rita Chao very fondly in her hip 60's A-Go-Go boots and miniskirts and also her bell-bottoms.
Here's Rita from 1973, performing in Mandarin, "Butterfly," a cover of Danyel Gerard's song.
This video clip made possible with help from Vernon Cheong and Georgiana Glass. This is for all fans of Rita Chao to enjoy!

The TITBITS: I Believe [1968 (Singapore) TV Newsreel Clip]
Here is a 30-second television newsreel clip of The TITBITS from 1968. I also slowed it down to their recording of "I Believe" so you can enjoy this rare video clip a second time.
The TIDBITS were SERENE WEE (13 yrs old), her sister MERLINA WEE (12) and their cousin BERNEDETTE DE SOUZA (12).
When the three young girls won the RTS Talentime Competition of 1967/68, they created quite an excitement in Singapore. They drew crowds by the tens of thousands everywhere they made a live appearance.
They won the Finals with "I Believe." The grand prize, a recording contract with RCA. The song was released on their first EP record, backed by The Trailers.
"Tiga Serangkai," Malay for three-leaf clover.
The Stylers (Singapore) - Di Tanjong Katong - Slide Show
Music is from The STYLERS' "Visit Malaysia 1990" album.
This prolific recording group began in the 1960's and thrived through the 70's and beyond, releasing a long string of popular guitar instrumental dance music.
I found these old photos at the National Archives of Singapore website: http://picas.nhb.gov.sg/picas/public/...
The STYLERS' "Di Tanjong Katong" is perfect for this little slide show that shows life in Katong and Joo Chiat area in the early 1960's as I remember it.
Katong Beach and Joo Chiat was where I grew up in the late 50's and early 60's. The area has changed a lot since then, as the slide show also shows the neighborhood as it looks today.
My beloved Katong Beach is no longer where it used to be, but has been moved farther south.

One of Morwenna's best one-off roles in my opinion, just showing how versatile this woman can be.
She's old, she's ugly and she's extremely posh, but that won't stop her from becoming a model will it? Just mind out for that pencil sticking out of your wotsit, would you mind?

Terry Gilliam: Nike [ad # 1 - ELVIS: LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION]
During Spring 2002, new advertisements from Nike were broadcast featuring many of the world's best footballers. The short films - made to tie in with the 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan - were directed by Terry Gilliam. Two advertisements were filmed - "The Secret Tournament" and "The Rematch". This webpage contains stills and behind-the-scenes pictures from the adverts.
"The Secret Tournament" was filmed in December 2001. Gilliam worked with Nicola Pecorini as Director of Photography and set designer Stefano Maria Ortolani. The advert, shot at Rome's Filmhouse Studios, is set in the belly of a cargo liner. Within the cargo liner is a massive cage with turf. Where eight teams of three players play a tournament under the watchful eye of Eric Cantona.
"The Rematch" was filmed on January 28 and 29. Fraser Taggart was Director of Photography for this second shooting session.
The action takes place to the scintillating backdrop of a re-mixed version of the Elvis Presley song "A Little Less Conversation." It's the first time one of the King's songs has been remixed.

"As far as I know, nothing was ever written about this clip in the Elvis press for 40 plus years, till it became available a couple of years ago. Why would Paramount have made such a film clip and not mentioned it in their promotion campaign, back in 61? This promo trailer must be, without a doubt, the rarest film footage meant for screening, not having been used, outside of the ONE surviving copy found in Denmark! So until professionally film footage is found from 1955, this 1960 clip is the rarest Elvis film ever found!"
With a marvelous early sixties feel of Elvis coming alive within a girl's framed photo...rare & unknown to me facts about the movie, plus some interesting new insights into Elvis' character.
For instance Robert Allison Baker III 'The Puppeteer' on the making of G.I. Blues:
"On the third day Elvis came in to kind of run through this (puppet piece). He stepped up on to the stage and walked up to the puppets. We started working the little girl with him. He turned to the director and he said, "I can not perform with this puppet. It's alive! And it's freaking me out! I have got to take a little time out and get myself calm because I don't like the feeling I have".
So he went back to his dressing room for over an hour.
Finally they told him, he had to come back so they could get the scene shot that day.... Finally by the end of the number, the director said, "Can I have the father puppet" And without Elvis knowing it, he put the puppet on his hand and he began hitting Elvis on the head with his stick. And Elvis at first got very angry - and then turned around and saw it was the director and he said it was OK.
Basically, Juliet (Prowse) was on the set during the whole thing. She was out in the audience with the children. We did everything and then a run-through after the audience left, for close-ups and angles. And that's when Elvis actually put one of the puppets on his hand and worked it. He found it kind of interesting. He seemed to work better with the puppets after that."
I particularly enjoyed Elvis & cast away from the film set.
Examining the look on Elvis' face throughout, you can observe plenty of emotions, including, but not limited to . . .
a) The professional worker.
b) Lust, with Juliet Prowse.
c) Sheer happiness at being home and out of the army.
d) That anxious look of 'What am I doing in this lightweight musical?'.
Running just over 2 minutes, this bonus is one of the world's rarest Elvis promo-promos - including terrible fake Japanese accent-versions and some great sixties TV footage of Elvis meeting the King & Queen of Thailand on set.

Roy Buchanan: HEY, JOE [Live AUSTIN CITY LIMITS]
One of the pioneers of the telecaster sound, he was noted for his use of note bending, volume swells, staccato runs and "pinch" harmonics. He is considered by many to be one of America's most soulful guitar masters, and even 20 years after his death, he maintains an army of devoted fans, including some of rock guitar's greatest (just ask Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson or Billy Gibbons). This performance, captured on the ACL stage on November 15, 1976, shows Roy Buchanan in his prime at the age of 37. Indeed, it may well be the best high-quality audio/video recording of his complete performance known to exist.

Hey y’all! Long time no blog – I know right?? I’ve been like super busy getting my comeback on ‘n stuff. Seriously, it’s a lot of work! And don’t even get me started on the touring. Get it?

MillerCoors is discontinuing Sparks: Boyz II Men -It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday [via sorryimissedyourparty]
As you've probably heard, MillerCoors is discontinuing Sparks due to government concerns that it was too popular with teenagers and its energy and booze combination was dangerous. Today is officially the last day that Sparks is being manufactured, although stores will keep selling it until the inventory runs out. My sound investment plan for this economy is to buy a ton of Sparks and wait a year, then sell it on eBay for a million bucks a six pack.
Personally, I never liked Sparks because of the terrible taste, but I'd don't like the government telling me what I can and cannot drink to put myself into a daterapeable stupor. Keep your laws out of my liver, Uncle Sam! I guess I understand that it's important to protect our impressionable youth; they are our future, after all. And lets be honest - has anyone ever actually enjoyed a Sparks "responsibly"? But this doesn't fully mitigate the sting of the fact that the Spark moratorium happened when Sparks had been planning the debut of "Sparks Red". We'll never know what Red Sparks could have been, but I can only assume that the red color is to symbolize the blood that will run in the streets as you go on a booze and taurine-fueled rage spree.
One of the victims of the great Sparks Prohibition is a "Sparks tongue", the bright orange hue your tongue turns after drinking a few. In honor of this sad day, here's a bunch of pictures of Sparks tongue. Memory lane has never tastes so much like orangey cough syrup.

1970. Keith Moon, his wife, “Legs” Larry Smith and Moon’s chaffeur, Cornelius Borland attend the opening of a new discotheque at The Red Lion public house in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. As they’re leaving at approx. 10.45 their Bentley is approached by a group of 20 skinheads. Borland moves towards the gang of youths and is soon involved in a scuffle. As Moon starts to drive away from the scene, Borland is knocked to the ground and falls under the wheels of the moving car where he is trapped, receiving fatal injuries. The fire brigade was called to the scene to free Borland’s body.
Moon spends three hours helping police with their inquiry but is not cautioned or charged. Several of the youths are also interviewed resulting in David Paul Holden, 18, appearing in Hatfield Court and an un-named boy appearing at Hatfield Juvenile Court on Monday January 5th, both charged with causing an affray. At their hearings, they are both remanded in custody for a week. On both occasions, Detective Sergeant R.G. Beveridge explains in his statement to the court that a man died during the incident.

Explaining his situation to the traffic warden who was nearby, he was warned to move his car or she would issue a ticket for illegal parking but he rushed into the theatre. Frank Sinatra, Jr. + Nancy Sinatra: Something [April 1967 - The Smothers Brothers Show: via Exquisitely Bored in Nacogdoches]
April 1967 performance from The Smothers Brothers Show
I think the basic "problem" with Frank Sinatra, Jr. is that the sense of entitlement (due to being one of Frank Sinatra's kids) he has doesn't work for him like it does for Nancy. Nancy is Sinatra's little girl, and there was the song about her and everything, so she was able to carve out a little niche for herself in pop culture, as well as in the entertainment industry. He, on the other hand, was unfortunately for him destined to forever be but a shadow of his legendary father. That's life.
Incidentally, "Somethin' Stupid" was written by C. Carson Parks, brother of frequent Brian Wilson collaborator, Van Dyke Parks, in 1967. C. Carson Parks recorded a version of the song with his wife as a duo called "Carson and Gaile" that same year.
