Rat poison fails to kill sex offender

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. - U.S. Marshals say a sex offender with three outstanding warrants tried to poison himself with rat poison and alcohol as they kicked in the door to his house.

Officials say Teddie Lee Carroll, 44, was being looked for by the Oscecola County Sheriff's Office. He was wanted for violating probation by failing to register as a sex offender. He was also wanted on similar charges out of Escambia County, Fla.

Carroll was originally convicted in 2000 in central Florida on charges of kidnapping, impersonating a police officer and lewd and lascivious assault on a minor.

He was later arrested for a second sex offense which involved raping a woman at gunpoint, but the charges were dropped after the victim refused to testify.

When Marshals and deputies from Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties arrived at the house they believed Carroll was at, they heard the front door being locked and someone running through the house. Then they saw Carroll take something from a pill bottle and wash it down with something from a large bottle.

Deputies and Marshals broke down the front door, and took Carroll to the hospital. That's where officials found out Carroll had apparently swallowed the rat poison and gasoline. Authorities interviewed Carroll, and discovered he had taken the rat poison, but had washed it down with vodka and iced tea. He was examined and cleared.

Carroll was booked into the Escambia County Jail, where he's being held on no bond.
