Come visit Jamie Lynn Spears in LA. No, not that LA, the other one. The one that stands for Louisiana, as in a little town called Kentwood that Jamie Lynn and her family call home. A little town with a restaurant that makes the BEST fried pickles ever - especially when Jamie Lynn is the cook! Take a tour of Jamie Lynn's house, go to school and cheerleading practice with her, and hang out with Jamie Lynn and her friends when they go clothes shopping and put on an impromptu fashion show. You'll also see Jamie Lynn like never before: covered in ice cream after challenging her friends to an ice-cream eating contest, blindfolded and whacking at a pi¤Nata, and behind the wheel of a driver's ed car (eek!).

Tom and Jerry-The Little Orphan "Mammy has just put out a huge Thanksgiving feast" (and as usual, every day before thanksgiving
The Bide-a-Wee Mouse Home has sent the orphan mouse, Nibbles, to spend Thanksgiving with Jerry. But Jerry's cupboard is bare, and Nibbles is always hungry. They start by raiding Tom's milk dish, but Tom wakes up and drains it. Fortunately, Mammy has just put out a huge Thanksgiving feast, just ready for the raiding. And that's just what Tom and Nibbles do, grabbing Pilgrim hats from the table decorations. All goes fairly well until Nibbles eats a whole orange, which is way too big for him. Jerry smacks him with a spoon, which sends the orange flying, right into Tom's mouth. Tom stalks up to the table in a feather duster, which turns into an Indian headdress. Battle follows, featuring Tom sending flaming cat-tails after the mice, and culminating in a champagne bottle launching Tom into the dish cabinet, which crashes down. Tom waves a white flag, and all three sit down to a polite dinner, but Nibbles eats the whole turkey before anyone else can touch it.

Jack White Joins Bob Dylan For One More Cup Of Coffee
Jack White Joins Bob Dylan For One More Cup Of Coffee
For the first time in probably forever, we had a weekend hatch more Meg related tips come in than those detailing the exploits of her other Whitewall, but still a lot of you wrote us about Jack's recent sit-ins with Bob Dylan down in Nashville last week. Larcenous with the titlist from the 9/19 shooting that JACk joined Bob for the first-ever concert performance of "Meet Me In The Morning," but the clip we excavated comes from the next night when, while still at the Ryman Auditorium, the two paired up on "One More Cup Of Coffee." Interesting to hear the contrast in the present state of their voices -- one gruff and worn, the other crackling, and wailing -- and as always with these live digit clips, much less interesting to actually watch. But you should click play anyway.
01 "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat" (Bob on electric guitar) 02 "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" (Bob on electric guitar) 03 "Watching The River" Flow (Bob on electric guitar) 04 "You're A Big Girl Now" (Bob on electric keyboard and harp) 05 "The Levee's Gonna Break" (Bob on electric keyboard, Donnie on electric mandolin) 06 "Spirit On The Water" (Bob on electric keyboard and harp) 07 "Desolation Row" (Bob on electric keyboard and harp, Donnie on electric mandolin) 08 "Workingman's Blues #2" (Bob on electric keyboard) 09 "Things Have Changed" (Bob on electric keyboard, Donnie on violin) 10 "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)" (Bob on electric keyboard) 11 "Meet Me In The Morning" (first live concert performance) (Bob on electric guitar and vocals, Jack White on electric guitar and vocals) 12 "Highway 61 Revisited" (Bob on electric keyboard) 13 "Nettie Moore" (Bob on electric keyboard, Donnie on violin) 14 "Summer Days" (Bob on electric keyboard) 15 "Masters Of War" (Bob on electric keyboard) ---- 16 "Thunder On The Mountain" (Bob on electric keyboard) 17 "Blown' In The Wind" (Bob on electric keyboard and harp)

Read Barney Bubbles' New Book on Hawkwind by Peter Seville

There is a book about Barney Bubbles - mine and it is published this week.
With 55,000 words and 600 images, reasons To be Cheerful: The Life & Work Of barney Bubbles has contributions from admirers and the significant collaborators of his working life as well as an essay by peter Seville, a foreword by Malcolm Garrett and an introduction by Billy Bragg.
To buy a copy visit: http://barneybubbles.com and click on the cover.
There you will find a complete description of the conception and realisation of all his major work, including Armed Forces, which is visually represented in full.
Couple of points: Armed Forced was released in 1979 and the major musical association of the early 70s was with Hawk wind not Headwind.
Best
PG
Barney Bubbles most famous design is probably the brilliant "Blockhead" logo
Q: How many graphic designers does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Does it have to be a light bulb?
A real thigh-slapper huh? What the punchline is (attempting to) make fun of is how designers are taught (or should be) to question assumptions when presented with a problem. These days they call this "thinking outside the box" but I won't because I don't want to be the sort of person who says things like thinking outside the box. Like, does a record sleeve have to be a cardboard square that opens at the side? Why can't it be round? In a tin banister? Die-cut like a floppy disk?
The original UK sleeve of Elvis Costello's 1978 album "Armed Forces" takes similar liberties with the traditional sleeve format. On the front (above) is a rather naff painting of elephants (which I've always assumed was some conceptual joke about the military) with the amateur, crack-handed quality of art you'd find at a jumble sale. But flip it over and things get a bit more interesting. The album doesn't open at the side but has four brightly-decorated, interlocking flaps..
... that open out like an Origami puzzle...
...into a riot of Jackson Pollock-, Kandinsky-, Pop Art-, and Mondrian-inspired graphics.
Remove the inner sleeve and you get the image that was on the front of the American version of the album (they added "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding?" to the deregulating too, which sound-wise doesn't fit in with the rest of the album at all.)
This is the work of a designer called Barney Bubbles who is a cult figure among other designers but is barely known outside the field. Unlike contemporaries and followers like Peter Servile, Neville Brody, and Vaughan Oliver there has never been a book published or a museum exhibition of his work. Barney was publicity shy, never gave interviews and was rather nonchalant about credits (his name doesn't appear anywhere on the "Armed Forces" sleeve) reasoning that it was just packaging and there's no designer credit on a box of soap powder. He was closely associated with happy rockers Headwind before making the transition to a more punk/new wave aesthetic working for Stiff Records in the late 70s where he produced an amazing body of work marked by a wit and conceptual brilliance that have kept them fresh today. He designed all Costello's sleeves up to the "Imperial Bedroom" album and other notable work included The Damnedest "Music For Pleasure" and Ian Diary's "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick," but his most famous design is probably the brilliant "Blockhead" logo.
"Armed Forces" is probably his Sistine Chapel though, an inspired example of what a great designer can do when given the opportunity to stretch his wings. Costello's previous album "This Years Model" was a big hit so I imagine Barney was told to make a splash with the sleeve of the next one. Above all, it looks like he's having fun, piling on the visual puns and references in a way that matches the intricate, dense wordplay of Costello's lyrics.

It was all part of the home-coming celebrations. If you've ever seen the VH-1 show about Kiss you'll see them in the parade on a float at the corner of Main street and 55.
