Duke Ellington - Afro Bosso

"During a performance of the Duke Ellington in 1965 we hear the Duke presenting one of his recent compositions "Afro Bosso". Drummer Sam Woodyard sets the pattern and there is ample room for all of Ellington's star musicians. One notices back in the trumpet section Duke's son Mercer. He would would lead his father's band after Duke's death in 1974"

Coleman Hawkins - I wish that I was Twins

"... We now see the 1935 performance of Coleman Hawkins announcing and playing two full chorusses of "I wish I were Twins". This was a tune recorded and made popular by Fats Waller in 1934 and Coleman gave it his best with Leo de la Fuente on piano. I think this is a most unique piece of early jazz history on film."

Gershon Kingsley - Popcorn

"Gershon Kingsley's " Popcorn " is one of the worlds most recognisable tunes ...not bad going for a man who penned the track in two minutes.! ! ..... It was recorded in 1969 for Kingsley's solo album " Music To Moog By " http://www.virginmegastores... which saw Kingsley pioneering the use of Dr. Moog's early synthesizer.....Hot Butter released a more up-tempo version of Popcorn in 1972 . This became an instant hit across the world, and has the distinct title ot being The Worlds First Commercially Successful "Synthesizer" Record, WOW !!......Just as the name Moog is connected to Synthesizer...so too is Kingsley to Electronica......N.B While nearly 100 cover versions of Popcorn have been released over the years( i have 37 ),the funniest if not most impressive, has to be by a bearded man with a rubber-band..."

Thelonious Monk - Rhythm-a-ning

"Another clip from a film recorded in the sixties and found in the archives of the Dutch broadcasting company. What else is buried in there and might show up at some time. A collector in Holland taped this from a jazz show of recordings done mainly in the late fifties or early sixties. The Thelonnious Monk quartet plays Rhythm-a-ning in 1961 with Charlie Rouse on tenor, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums."
